NECA Aliens: Blue
Xenomorph Warrior Review

It was the Genocide 2pk that I ultimately settled on back then. The sweet red Xenomorph and then a nice, silver-highlighted black Xenomorph. I would skip the brown-highlighted figure from Wave 1 and then I’d wait patiently to see if NECA would delve into Kenner Aliens and cough up some fun repaints. I was good… until I ran across the Brown Xenomorph on a trip in Kansas City. Looking him over, I didn’t want to wait for the 2-pack. I mostly blame a silly packaging mistake. The figure had been packaged inadvertently clawing his way out; the insert had gotten stuck in his claws. That was too funny.

Out of the package, the Xeno continued to impress. The size is great. The sculpt is covered in amazing detail. I wish the lower legs were a little more resilient, but I can get good poses out of the articulation all the same. I guess I’m just really enamored with the “buck” and as you can see in the pics, that has resulted in me buying the 2pk with the silver-highlights and the red Xenos, and now the original ’79 Alien & the blue-highlighted figure in wave two. I’m up to five with surely more on the way. Doh!

On the subject of the Classic Alien. One might notice that I’ve tossed in a few extra pics of him for comparison since Vault just had the one. Next to his blue-highlighted wavemate, you can better see that the arms and legs are all entirely new. In some cases, the detail is so minor that I’m surprised NECA took the time to make new molds, but I’m glad they did. The new pieces look sharp, just like that new head sculpt with the clearish dome. By the way, anyone else want to see them reissue him with some different tints to the dome? A brownish or amber dome would probably look pretty slick.

Actually on that subject, buying all these repaints might just be how far I’ve come in my appreciation for what NECA has done so far. Admittedly, I do love smart repaints – I always have. I blame Kenner & Batman. If NECA wasn’t doing these different highlights on the basic Xenomorph, I guarantee I wouldn’t have my slow-growing hive. If you’re buying just one of each or a few of each because you just love Aliens that much, then these color differences will go a long way to improving the shelf display I think. While I’m ultimately waiting to see what NECA does with some Kenner inspired Aliens like the Bull or Gorilla, I’m up for a few more basic repaints too. I’d love to see the NECA version in a light electric blue a la the Kenner figure. Or, maybe even something as simple as another black Xeno with red highlights for the contrast? That might look pretty evil. They’re all armybuilders at this point, so hopefully NECA will keep packing them around Bishop, the Nostromos Crew, and whatever other great releases they have planned to keep the line going. I’m looking forward to it.

  1. Did you just accuse Kenner of “smart” Batman repaints? Because a figure line where you can get Batman all white, bronze, urban camo, zebra striped, day-glo yellow, and every other color under the sun, but not black and grey/blue, that’s smart repainting?

    1. I have black & blue/grey from DKC and the TAS line had tons of permutations of the basic costume. All the movies had a basic Batman. And then tons of hilarious or neat repaints. What lines frustrated you?

  2. I blame Kenner Batman repaints for killing toy lines. Not just because it was nigh-impossible to get the rare, short-packed villains amongst Butterscotch Wingblast Batman, Neon Night-Fighter Batman with Grappling Hook and Dino-Buddy, and Laser Scuba Attack Batman. No, because other toy lines then thought it necessary to come out with ridiculous hero and villain variants that clogged shelves while other characters were as rare as birds’ finger-claws. I’m looking at YOU, Millennial MOTU!

Having said all that, a dark-greyish smoky dome on the Big Chap (similar to the Kenner 2-Pack Alien Warrior) would rule.

    1. MO2K had some of the best repaints!! Reverse Two-Bad, Blood Armor Skeletor, Green Trap-Jaw, Red Beast Man, Claw Attack Stratos, MAA in Silver, Fire & Ice Skeletor! I wish there were a way to get those in MOTUC.

  3. how about just a wet-gloss black deco with *clear* dome head variant?
that’s how I always saw the Xenomorph.

Any hints as to a possible Queen or even King Xeno at NYTF?

      1. Local NECA stalker piping in. According the Randy, Kyle Windrix’s (who is sculpting it) brother hasn’t been doing well so it may not be ready in time for NYTF. Hope things turn around for his bro though, got him sitting on my desk burning stuff. 🙁

    1. Ha! I remembered the pose. It took me forever to figure out what it came from. I should’ve used my Usual Suspects background though!!

  4. I picked up the Genocide pack & loved the figures; NECA impressed me with the design & sculpt of the figures & I’d thought about picking up some more of the line. But, as I’m sitting here typing this, I have my third Predator figure this weekend (yes, different character, I know), after the first two broke at the elbow joint, which I’m terrified to open, for fear that it’ll be going back to the store with its gimpy brothers.

NECA’s not exactly inspiring a great deal of hope for me buying any more of their figures right now.

  5. I want to see Big Chap with a smokey dome and glow-in-the-dark head in homage to the original Alien figure. Oh yeah!

  6. I’m totally digging the sculpt work that NECA has been putting out. Super detailed and lovely. I only wish I could find some damn Pacific Rim figures on the pegs. I STILL haven’t found a Crimson Typhoon or Striker Eureka at retail.
