Matty on Facebook: What the
Flock?! (& a Possible Solution)

On Facebook, Mattel has let us know there might be some problems with Moss Man…

Hey He-Fans,

Just to let everyone know, we are working out some of the kinks with Moss Man right now. The flocking on a highly articulated figure is a bit tricker then we expected. There is a chance Moss Man may get pushed out to April…

…and the “as-of-yet-unannounced” April figure will get bumped up to March (see why we have bonus figures in tow, stuff like this happens a lot!). This is not confirmed yet, just want to keep you all in the loop.

And along those lines, would fans be interested in Moss Man if he was not flocked? Or is this a make or break deal? We are doing everything we can to keep him flocked, but just curious what fans think?

If the only way to flock him would be to limit the articulation would that be okay also? Curious what you all think?

We want to hear your feedback!

Matty

Basically, this is Mattel asking if it’s okay if they just don’t flock Moss Man. I don’t know how I feel about it. We talked a bit about this when we first saw the slide from SDCC. If you look at the close up on the shoulder, you can see the articulation is covered up by the flocking and would likely scrape off if moved. For the solution, I expected something similar to the 200x Moss Man. His flocking stopped short of where the articulation would interfere with it. But that figure wasn’t articulated like these, so while it could pass muster in 2002, I don’t know how it would look now.

I really, really want the flocking. It’s part of the appeal. But at the same time, I want the figure to look good. If Mattel really wants fans to decide, they need to show us their best flocking attempt that doesn’t conflict with the articulation. It sounds like he’ll be delayed anyway, so why not give us some time to see their best effort and find out if flocking the toy is worth it?

Update:

Here’s my idea for a possible solution. How about partially flocking Moss Man? Maybe not the design below, I’d turn to the Four Horsemen for a final one, but maybe just flocking him in areas where the articulation won’t be a factor? Take a look and let me know what you think?

  1. It figures. I won’t go so far as to say don’t bother making him if you can’t flock him, but almost.

    1. i’m right here w/ you silnt… for 20 bucks, flock me hard or at least, giveme some new sculpted parts to look mossy!

  2. I just really have a ton of questions.

-Could we get some extra sculpted pieces to make a non-flocked one look good?
-What’s the sculpt like under the first head? Is it just smooth (anticipating the flock)?

  3. Moss Man most definitely MUST be flocked! That was his only appeal to me back in the day with the original and made him what he was. Otherwise he would’ve just been a green Beastman. As a kid, you could’ve just called him Flock Man and I wouldn’t have cared and still would’ve picked him up as again, that’s what made him different. Oh, and the pine scent was a nice bonus. Not sure if the folks would still want that too! Haha..

  4. He has to be flocked! Mattel cracks me up, they’re all like “We may not be able to do this” and then a handful of people on the internet solve the problem in an hour!

  5. I’ve seen three or four semi-flocked solutions so far, but I like yours best.

  6. Go with the partial flocking – that way we still get a fuzzy Mossman that can look cool beating up baddies in different poses without scraping. If it does scrape, I guess it could be “battle damage”…

  7. I have yet to find a Flocked figure that, if opened, still looked any good three years down the road. It’s a novelty that, for me, has run its corse.

Give me a good sculpt without the gimmicks. and Flock is JUST a gimmick.

You guys should be glad I don’t collect this line. 😛

  8. I want to say the sculpt and character are cool enough to make me want the figure without the flocking, but…

On the other hand, I find myself wanting each MOTUC figure more and more.

  9. It looks he stands a good chance of being partially flocked now.

I guess the internet did a good thing for once.

  10. But which flocking design are they going to use? Ultimately they should let the 4 Horsemen decide since they would make it more artistic. That’s one of the reasons I like Noisy’s design, aesthetically it looks better than the others.

One thing I would like to see is for them to add Beastman’s spiked bicep armor, only painted brown like Moss Man’s weapons. That way it would cover most of the bare patch on the bicep and look like cool tree armor.

  11. it is collector only fig so wouldnt mind a beware of “moss loss” disclaimer…

    chia-man? YES

NateF – what was that solution again?
