Ask Matty – December 1st Edition

Ask Matty
December 1st, 2010

1. SilntAngl asks: The Superman & Batman families have been fleshed out pretty well by the DCSH/DCUC lines, but where are the prominent DC pets? Some of our collections won’t be complete without Krypto, Streaky, Ace, Rex the Wonder Dog, and of course, Detective Chimp. Are there any plans for this important subset of DC Characters?

Toy Guru is a huge proponent of Detective Chimp. As for the other super pets, nothing to announce yet, but anything is possible!

2. Mr. Rant asks: I’m content with the Wonder Twins Eagle standing in for Zoar and Screech, but is there any chance of the birds getting their harnesses anytime soon?

Yes, we do have plans for the perch and harness for the MOTU birds in all the needed colors! Stay tuned.

3. Manekochan asks: Thanks for the Plastic Man answers. I think he’s the announced figure I’m most excited about (unannounced is Ambush Bug! You gotta make him!). What unreleased figure, across any of the lines you cover, are you most looking forward to seeing hit the toy aisles?

BattleCat from MOTU Classics is a huge favorite around here as are finishing the rest of the Ghostbuster crew. In the DC world, our Retro Action vintage cloth figures (starting with Green Arrow, available Dec 15th only on Mattycollector.com) is going to be great!

4. Noisy asks: Can you talk a little bit about Movie Masters figures and their status? I think I speak for all the Movie Masters fans when I say we feel like the odd collectors out with the delays and lack of information?

We had to skip the November figure due to some shipping issues, but we will pick back up in December with Survival Suit Bruce Wayne and continue offering one figure per month on Mattycollector.com. We’ve also been able to increase production to lower the price to 15.00 per figure going forward.

5. Vault asks: I love the commitment that’s been made to Super Powers figures. Utilizing the separate variants and making the lesser known characters is great! Is there any interest in delving into the fabled “4th wave characters” – beyond the original 33? I’ve been wanting a Steve Trevor, a.k.a. Rocketman, ever since it was shown years ago. Here’s a link about him: Toy Otter’s Rocketman Page.

Captain Comet would be a very cool figure, and we are big fans of the Super Powers line. But no plans to announce quite yet.

  1. Okay, I followed the link, but who the hell is Rocketman? Why would you want him? I’m actually happy that Matty misunderstood and thought you meant Captain Comet an ACTUAL DC character that BELONGS in a DC line.

      1. One of my biggest wants and problems with DCUC is the slim chance we’ll get many “civilians” that are so important to the DCU. Characters like Lois, Alfred, Perry, Jimmy, Commissioner Gordon, Steve Trevor, and so many more are important to the DCU. A Lex in his business suit and another Clark Kent (rather than the DCSH one) along with other alter egos such as Bruce Wayne would be nice to have.

  2. Just saw the answer on Fwoosh about bringing in more Rainbow lanterns. I realize Blackest Night is popular now, but isn’t this little like overkill? DCD just did figures and I realize they aren’t the same “quality” as DCUC but its not like DCUC doesn’t suffer from rampant QC issues either. So the grass isn’t greener on the other side of the fence. They only have so many slots remaining in Spring 2011 that can be filled after the lists leaked and the line only goes through 2012. Who knows if we can even get to 2012 anyway! After Disney acquired Marvel anything can happen even though Hasbro has the Marvel license for a few more years.

    1. DC Direct’s version are pretty good for me, so I have mixed feelings about that announcement. I want Classics, so they’ll move, but at the same time I feel like I have them already.

I think about the end of the line all the time. I’m always wondering what my ‘Top 5’ I didn’t get will be.

  3. Whoever asked that question about Super Powers wave 4 is an idiot. We’re almost done with the characters created for the toyline let them make actual DCU characters!

    1. Surely, you know that the 4th wave of Super Powers includes Creeper, a classic Metallo, classic Supergirl, Manhunter, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Black Racer, Shockwave, Reverse Flash, Obsidian, and Atomic Knight?

And that Rocketman is essentially Steve Trevor, another “actual” DC Character?

But if you’re an idiot to want Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, El Dorado, Silicon, Quadrex, or Howitzer… then, well, I’ll wear my idiot badge proudly. I want ALL the DC Characters no matter where they come from.

      And that includes Conjura. 😉

  4. You might keep an eye on Toynewsi, they’re reprinting other sites Q&As this month. Maybe they’re asking permission, but it doesn’t seem like the right thing to do if you ask me.

  5. has anyone asked if mattel would consider an experiment on matty of releasing one C&C on matty only, just the C&C from one particular wave? it’s not been done, and if it went well, mattel would officially get the credit for having the stones and foresight that eluded both toy biz and hasbro as it pertains to C&C characters. i think they should start w/ the kilowog wave… let’s see what sales of that wave do if mattycollector offered kilowog separately.

    1. especially since they said in the AFP Q&A that starting w/ DCU 13, you could purchase individual figs from matty… so does that mean that the DCU C&C for wave 13 will be available separately then?

      1. I need to look into the separate thing. I thought I read something about the other mattel website selling singles or something.

It’d be cool if they’d sell the C&Cs like you describe.

      2. I don’t think so at all. A cnc figure is nothing more than incentive to purchase an entire wave. Making them separate purchases is nothing different from just selling big figures like Lobo.

  6. I really want to know how they are going to handle GB2 figs since they reuse the same body for the 4 GBs? They have to make Ray & Winston with the slime blowers, otherwise it will suck. Mini-mates already made GB2 Ray & Winston with just the proton packs and that is not cool!

Come on Matty, don’t cop out on us.

  7. Rex the Wonder Dog? I haven’t even heard that name in years! That’s a blast from the past.

  8. You ask for Rocketman and you get a Captain Comet hint?

If you asked for Black Vulcan would they say they’ve done two Black Lightning’s already?
If you asked for Apace Chief would they offer you Manitou Raven?

Personally, none of these are really DC Classics, but it’s a wide umbrella. Not much I can do about it.
