Matty on Facebook: A Vision of Scareglow

Today on Facebook, Mattel posted images of the November Masters of the Universe figure, Scareglow! I might be inappropriately excited about it, being that Scareglow is one of my all-time favorite MOTU figures and one of the few Evil Masters I gave the time of day as a kid. I don’t know what it is about him, the glow in the dark bones, the cracked skull, the cape. There’s just something that tripped my seven year old mind and it’s held on for twenty years. In 200x, we missed out on Scareglow in both the toyline and the follow-up stactions. I’m still not over that.

All that has added up to an intense excitement for this particular figure and these new promo shots do not disappoint. Plus, the bio’s got me full of questions after the jump…

If you’re not familiar with this guy, you’re not alone. He’s from the tail end of the toyline, didn’t get to shine in either the Filmation or MYP cartoons, and only has a few comic appearances to his name. Still, his vintage figure is a highly sought after MOTU piece and his inclusion is welcome in the new toyline. Plus, one of the mysteries surrounding him has been laid to rest, at least in classics continuity, he’s is not the ghost of Skeletor, but is now labeled as the ghost serving Skeletor. I always considered him as a separate character, Faker’s the evil robot of Skeletor and there’s no confusion there.

From the back of his box, we also have Scareglow’s bio:

Scareglow
Real Name: Karak Nul

In life, Nul was a shifty bounty hunter who spent years attempting to break into Castle Grayskull, obsessed with legends that within lay the power to become the Master of the Universe. In death, he was cursed and banished into the dimension of Infinita – forever chained to his past crimes. He was brought back to Eternia by a magical spell of light cast by Skeletor to locate the most evil warriors in the five dimensions. Provided with a Scythe of Doom, Nul agreed to join forces with Skeletor and quickly became known as “Scareglow” due to his ability to burst forth and freeze his enemies with fright.

Vault, Rant, and I had a healthy debate this afternoon about the bio. I like it, but I was outvoted. Still, I’m doing the typing, so sad day for them. I will start with what I don’t like. What is the scroll? What is the key inside? I get the basic gist here – he spent his life trying to break in Castle Grayskull and apparently got close enough to be cursed for his trouble. The scroll is part of the curse somehow, but I would have liked a little more explanation. What’s the scroll-case and key do? What’s it called? Who cursed him? How’s the curse work? Who knows? And that’s where the bios lead us, too many nuggets and no sweet and sour sauce to dip them in.

Other than that, I’m cool with it. I like his real name. I don’t mind his being a bounty hunter – Skeletor’s minions really can’t be accountants or Rand-Mart employees. Bounty hunters and mercenaries will probably be over-represented in the ranks. The five dimension and Infinita references are neat. And, hey, he’s shifty. That’s important for ghosts.

I’m loving this figure from afar. I’m loving the painted bones. The glow-in-the-dark feature. The tattered and translucent cape. This is everything I would want a MOTUC Scareglow to be. I wouldn’t mind some shoes instead of toed boots, but I won’t worry about that in light of everything else being spot on. Also, I agree with the sentiment that he should have been a month sooner. He would’ve ended up arriving here around October 22nd – just in time for his power of fear to celebrate the season. Oh well, I guess we’ll be seeing him in time for some Pumpkin Pie and Turkey though. Not too, too late.

  1. Again, Mattel is getting my money with the new head, new armor(cape), new weapon paradigm. At least we get the scroll thing to help out with the value.

This will be my first MOTUC (KG aside) that I never had the vintage version. That’s interesting.

    1. My first one with no vintage version was actually Beast Man right out of the gate.

I just didn’t care about the bad guys all those years ago.

  2. I have a theory about the scroll and key. He is forever chained to his crimes…The key contains the scroll listing all those crimes. He would have to read the scroll and relive all those moments or something to actually use the key and possibly be freed from his punishment….or something like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get more info off another figure.

    1. I thought it was a non-working key to the Castle. Like if he were in Hell or something. (<..>)

          1. But, now that I think about it you might be more right. Why would they give him a key to the castle? That would be bad, wouldn’t it?

            1. That’s why I think he can’t open it.

Hopefully, we’ll hear a little more about it soon.

  3. If he’s painted that well when the figures come, he’ll be pretty cool. I love the contrast! d(^_^)b

  4. I love the figure. The debate we were having earlier is based on the tiny tidbit of info they gave us on the “Cursed Grayskull reliquary”. I was hoping for more of an understanding as to what it does, where it comes from, what he did to be cursed by it, and who cursed him. That’s where my disappointment came from.

On He-Man.org forums, ToyGuru gave out a little more info, which helps:

“As for the accessory, it holds a key, as shown at SDCC. We never said it was a scroll holder. It represents Scareglow’s past crimes (trying to break into Castle Grayskull) as explained in the bio. And it is removable. Think of it as an Eternian version of a ball and chain (like Marley’s Ghost in a Christmas Carol). For trying to break into Castle Grayskull, Scareglow must forever carry around a reliquary holding the key to the Castle but can never open it. Truly a curse for his crimes!”

    1. That’s a terrible curse. It’s like if you spent your whole life trying to get a Scareglow toy and then they finally make one… only you can’t open the white mailer it comes in. (;_;)

    2. If Mattel wanted to really be sadistic, they would seal up the reliquary so we can’t open it either. 😛

  5. If he’s supposed to be made up of nothing but bones why does he need a loincloth? Just saying.

  6. maybe the answer to some of these questions, like who cursed him, will come on the bios of other figs, like the goddess who cursed him. just sayin’.

i wanna know why skeletor is using light spells.. isn’t skeletor supposed to versed in the dark arts? you know, by professor lupin!
