Pre-SDCC: Mattel News,
GL costumes, Symbiotech, & More!

As we gear up towards SDCC next week, there’s been a few announcements, teases, and sneak peeks at what we can expect to see at the big event. We’ve got the details for the 2011 Mattel subscriptions, where to find the Green Lantern movie costumes, and some news about upcoming figures!

  • This month’s ToyFare #157 gives DCUC collectors got their first look at figures from DCUC16 as well as one from the super-secret subline: Jonah Hex, Creeper, Bane, & Kyle Rayner. Of the lot, Bane looks the best overall & Kyle’s head sculpt looks sharp, but I’m going to need to see the upcoming deluge of pics from SDCC to tell what I do and don’t like. The super-secret subline is shaping up to be a modern line, which has resulted in Kyle getting his modern costume. I don’t mind, but getting Kyle in his traditional 90s duds is now my No. 1 DCUC request.

  • My JLU days are mostly long over, but TF#157 gives collectors a first look at a new 3pk with a JLU Batman decoed in TAS colors (it looks really cool) packed with a classic colors Joker and a Grey Ghost! Grey Ghost is long overdue. Like most JLU, I feel the tug to pick this up, but luckily, I never find any new stuff at Target.

  • Also pictured is a new Ghostbusters 4pk coming to TRU this Fall. It features the GBs in their dark grey uniforms from the second film. This is the one item that I knew would test my resolve to quit the line, so we’ll see what happens. The set includes “tongue” Slimer as well as 5 (hopefully removable) santa hats as featured in the scene where we first see the uniforms. The only drawbacks so far are that Peter is back to having tucked in pants and it’s unlikely that Winston will receive an updated head sculpt to match his likeness in the second film.

  • In more DCUC news, the WizardWorld has its latest DCUC Fan poll up and ready to go. This time fans are getting to choose between a group of C&C’s for DCUC20. I’ve been very critical of the fan polls in the past – the characters simply aren’t chosen with popularity in mind – and this poll appears to follows suit. We can choose from the Shaggy Man, Blockbuster, King Shark, Girder, Wildebeest, & Nekron.

There’s some good choices & bad choices there, but I fear that Nekron’s current super-high profile is going to give him an unfair advantage here. It particularly annoys me because of the super-secret subline and the fact that I’d rather see him as a normal-sized dude. My inner conspiracy theorist looks at this list and pictures Mattel crafting a poll so that they can make Nekron. I urge each of you to reach back to your comic roots and vote for a character you’ve loved for a long time. That would be just about any of the other five…

  • In Four Horsemen news, the SDCC Exclusive Alpha Phase Waves of the Outer Space Men sold out in little over twelve hours on Thursday. The rest of the production run will be available at SDCC in the form of $20 2pks (Astro-Nautilus / Metamorpho & Inferno / Xodiac). The 4H have said that OSM fans will also be getting their first look at Series 3!

  • The 4H have also announced that another of the Fantastic Exclusive properties, one of my faves, is back on the Four Horsemen Design production schedule: Symbiotech! Check out this page for a look at some Symbiotech designs! Look for more news as the Four Horsemen relaunch their online presence in coming weeks.

  • The upcoming cover of Entertainment Weekly gives us our first look at Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern costume. I try not to pre-judge films, particularly based on one picture, but uh… well, Deadman sums up my initial feelings…

  • Finally, Matty has announced the 2011 Club Eternia plan as well as a new Ecto-1 subscription plan for Ghostbusters. Here’s the gory details:

GL costumes, Symbiotech, & More!

  1. That costume is… not quite right. I don’t think Ryan should be in the basic costume for the role, but I always thought that a movie GL should be more armored.

I don’t mind the lightsuit deal, but it looks like muscles. Something’s not right.

  2. Nekron probably already has a commanding lead. I voted King Shark.

Symbiotech looks cool. I hadn’t heard of it before.

The GL costume itself looks okay, but the mask looks crappy.

  3. ” I urge each of you to reach back to your comic roots and vote for a character you’ve loved for a long time.”

Oh, no one loves Wildebeest and you darn well know it. Blockbuster would be tempting if it was 90’s Nightwing style, big creepy head Blockbuster.

  4. That Girder dude looks like a badass hobo cyborg, I love it! But I’m afraid they’ll just reuse the Kilowog body, so I’d choose Nekron to at least get an all-new sculpt.

    1. hobo cyborg! I love it!

I voted for Girder just because I want to see that level of detail in the line, but you’re right. Hobo cyborg with painted on rivets…

  5. I’ve seen the pics for wave 16. I think I’m starting to feel done with that line. Maybe I’ll feel differently after SDCC. But we already know about 16, about GLC, about the Legion 5pk, so what are they going to wow us with?

The fanpolls results might surprise you. On a lot of the boards Nekron has been receiving the least support. Less than Wildebeet even.

    The Symbiotech designs look cool.

    Green Lantern costume doesn’t.

  6. I’m sorry, the GL costume looks like he’s wearing the leather from a car seat.

So now Club Eternia is no limit on the number of subs you can have? I think that’s maybe something to worry about if they’re still using their sooper-seekrit ‘internal logistics’ calculation voodoo to decide how many figs to run off. Also, boo that they specifically spell out weapons packs and stands are NOT part of the deal. Well, maybe they won’t have to be because they’re changing their thinking and such things will be ‘evergreen’ items you can buy any old time without….. NAAAAAAAA.

    *sigh*

    1. LOL

The unlimited subs are okay as long as they factor in that there will be additional purchases. For this year, it seemed that they sold a ton more subs and were excited, but possibly didn’t notice that the sub number was inflated by resellers. This year, they should look at the number of buyers and not subs sold.

  7. club eternia NEVER had a limit to how many subs you could get… that’s why BBTS gets as many as they do…

I don’t hate the movie GL.. but I don’t love it… I need to see more pictures of it. my biggest issue though? if they whole thing is a CG construction, why the hell does it look like foam latex?

also… why make a GB sub? none of those figures sold out like MOTU.. all were available for days (venkmen aside)

now.. the problem is, I *might* get the sub, if I get the motu one too.. you know, just for the hell of it… but I don’t want any 12″ figures… so.. are those included too?

  8. no, the 10 limit is if you’re buying on matty day-of-sale.

i voted girder too, that design kicks ass!!

  9. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I’m with Neal Adams, mostly, on the Green Lantern costume. The balance of darks and greens on the classic costume works so well. But I wonder if this is going to be “protosuit” Green Lantern and during the climax the filmmakers will settle into a more classic look. One can always hope. I like the mask, though, and the actor does look the part.

But I can’t help but think of this guy:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automan

In regards to the DC Fan Poll figures, yes, I do believe the deck is stacked in favor of Necron–or intended to be in spite of the talk on the boards. Necron is a skeleton, essentially and skeletons are cool, right? I’m not much of a modern DC fan these days or a collector of the figures, but I have to admit to a soft spot for the Shaggy Man, as he was a villian in the Morrison JLA run.

But is it madness to want a Niles Caulder figure in his Action Chair? I’ve been reading the original Drake/Premiani run in Showcase form, and yeah, I want Niles Caulder on my shelf, terrorizing monsters with his flamethrower and giant claw, inexpicabily unfolded from a small wheelchair trunk!

    1. Hi, Erik! Thanks for joining in!

The JLA Shaggy Man aka the General is one of my top C&C wants! Somewhere down in the cellar I have a crappy TJ/JLA custom of him. LOL

And it’s not madness… the Chief is a big want around here.

  10. You know, with the announcement that the Fantastic Exclusive is moving to Symbiotech after the whole OSM/Glyos thing I have to believe that the idea is to make them using Glyos joints and keep them compatible with the OSM. What do you guys think?….

    1. From the sounds of you’re pretty close. They’re calling it ‘symbio-lock’ and it sounds like some of the pieces will be compatible.
