Matty on Facebook: Moss Man debuts (again!)

Matty: “Just got in our final sample of Moss Man! We know fans have been waiting to see how the flock turned out. We really pushed the limits to flock as much as possible. Enjoy the shots!”

Also, for those in the LA area, be sure to head over to Gallery 1988 this Friday night for the Art of MOTU show opening. Not only will this free event feature some of the hottest artists interpreting the world of MOTU, but we will be revealing one of our SDCC MOTUC items at the show! Full details for the show are in the news section on Mattycollector.com!

For now, enjoy the pics!

There’s already two sides of debate to Moss Man. Some fans are upset with how he turned out while others think he looks great. For my money, I’m impressed with how well Mattel did on the flocking. He doesn’t looked partially flocked at all. He looks like I would’ve expected had they released him without mention problems. They did a great job. I’m not sure about the longer loin cloth (possibly to cover the lack of flocking on the hip joints?), but it’s certainly not an issue.

Still some fans aren’t happy with the flocking, particularly on the heads and covering the ears. I wouldn’t mind seeing him with this ears unflocked either. But I’m not upset by it. It’s such an easy fix (the problem with flock is that it comes off) that I don’t see a reason to get upset over it. Your mileage may vary.

Finally, some fans are upset by being shown one thing and given another. Their is a solution to that and it’s for Mattel to not show us any product until just before release. We would just being seeing Battle Cat and Trap Jaw now, weeks before they go on sale. But we want to see them early, Mattel wants to show early, and that’s why the system works the way it does. Personally, I can’t think of any MOTU figure that was such a disappointment when it was in hand despite the “bait-and-switch” claims. Adora may be an exception, but she’s exactly that – an exception. Some may not look as good, but there’s nothing in the world that can make a chinese factory worker paint these with the same love and affection the 4 Horsemen give the hand-painted prototypes we see first. That’s life. It’s not just MOTUC, or just Mattel, or even just the toy industry. It’s near impossible for a mass produced toy to equal the quality of a hand-crafted single piece.

  1. I forgot to add the part about the SDCC item being shown tonight. Since Matty says “item”, I’ll assume it’s not a figure. Since it’s an art show, I’m thinking “Art Book vol. 2”.

      1. If that’s the case, whatever legal reasons held back the first one would apply to the second so surely that’s the case. I hear eBay prices for these were finally comparatively low, but it was hardly worth the price tag in the first place.

  2. Meh. The face sculpt makes him look a monkey and the flocking looks over done. Mattel screwed up a once great figure.

  3. I’m not hating on it, I just think Mattel could have done better. I guess you’re right about seeing the figures early, but it still sucks.

  4. I’m fine with it, but I might try and see if the flocking will come off the ears like you suggest.

The Facebook page is always full of nerdrage, so I wouldn’t put much stock in them being upset.

      1. evidently, all you have to do is rub an elbow disc in the ears, i hear joints just total that flocking!!

and am i reading that right… JG feels he’s been flocked too hard, so he’s asking for a kinder, gentler flock? and for god’s sake, stop trying to flock him in the ear? 😉

        1. LOL.

I really bet it will come off with a little elbow grease. It’s a bad call, but I’ve given up over there. It’s an 80/20 split, so I’m expecting there to be a big fallout come March unless Mattel gets this change done early.

  5. They show us prototypes. I don’t see why people can’t understand that. “Final figure may vary”. Hell, it’s even on the boxes when you buy the figures. People need to get over it.

    1. That’s really the case. Sometimes the toy companies don’t even have control over what they get from the factories. They show us a plan and then they try and get as close as possible. There’s no “bait-and-switch” here.

  6. The longer loincloth makes me think he’ll go better with the pre-eternians?

    Why’d they do that?

  7. Sometimes I miss stuff, is that knife on his belt removable?

And those of you upset with this version. Were you really liking the model train grass compared the classic moss?

  8. Always more and more disagreement in the MOTUC world. Yeah, the prototype looked better, but all the prototypes I’ve seen for both MOTUC and DCUC look better than the finals.

    1. Prototypes are exactly that. Someone said to me the other day “even the back of the package says the look may vary”. This is really nothing new for pro toy collectors. Maybe some of the MOTUC are legitimately selling to folks who don’t usually buy toys?

The protos will always look better. A hand-painted 4H one-off can’t be replicated with mass production.

    1. I do wish the final figures would have some of the bright colors of the protos, but I’m happy with all the final figures except Goddess.

  9. The prototypes always look better. They are one of a kind, usually larger items, hand crafted by the 4 Horsemen. The actual figures are mass produced, molded by machines and given detail by unskilled chinese laborers.

Anyone who expects the same quality needs to come back to reality.

  10. I’m just gonna outright say it, the Mattel facebook is a giant cluster****. Some of those people act like that page is an anonymous free for all and many of them let their stupidity hang out openly. It’s like a 4chan environment on a board where you post with your name. They’re idiots. I stopped bothering with that page. Everything relevant gets posted here, at Poe’s, or at the .Org.
