Top Ten Star Wars Characters
We Want Painted Black!

One of the biggest things to hit the toy industry in awhile was Hasbro’s announcement that Star Wars was finally venturing in the 6″ realm. Even better? The figures still have a few kinks to work out, but they generally rock. If you’ve been waiting for Star Wars in 6″, I imagine you’ve got to be pretty excited.

And that excitement naturally translates into the figures you just have to have. I’m sure there are some that the vast majority of us are simply having a hard time waiting for the announcement. Three waves in and no Vader? C’mon! While I enjoy the Prequels just fine thank you very much (nearly all movies have a few things I don’t like), I’ll admit to my anticipation largely stemming from the OT. The aforementioned Vader, Chewie, C-3PO, etc. – but those are all coming right? They pretty much have to unless the line is suddenly DOA.

So the question is, who else from Star Wars do I really want painted black? (And yes, I know The Black Series applies to Hasbro’s new 3.75″ offerings, but that’s just bad branding on Hasbro’s part. Here at IAT Black = Twelfth Scale). Some names immediately sprang to mind last night and I quickly found myself trimming the last down to ten instead of building it up. I narrowed it down last night, and now that Vault has finally gotten around to sending me his Top Ten, we can get this show on the road!

Noisy No. 10 – Anyone That Isn’t a 3 3/4″ Figure! Vault No. 10 – Admiral Ackbar!
I’m going to twirl my mustache a bit & say that SWB can’t come into its own until it gets a figure of character not available in 3.75″ (at least not at the time). It’d be noteworthy for the line and a fun experiment to see what everyone would do! (Pictured at left is Sim Arloo. He has vintage figure, but no modern update. What??) IT’S A TRAP! Need I say more? I’m pretty sure this figure is going to get made. But I just wanted to point out that the bar has been set pretty high because of the Vintage Collection figure. Amazing sculpt, paint, and articulation all came together to make a perfect three inch clone. All I need is for it to happen again in a larger scale. Easy, right?
Noisy No. 9 – Logray! Vault No. 9 – MagnaGuard!
Let’s face facts. Ewoks are going to happen in the Black line sooner or later and I’m okay with it! But which one first? Chirpa? Wicket? Nah. For me, I want Logray first and for no other reason than his vintage figure was a childhood favorite.
Plus – Coolest Accessories of Any Ewok!
Another figure I want solely based off of his Vintage Collection edition. That is one of my favorite fig (I never even cared about MagnaGuards before). They had an amazing sculpt & paint, plus articulation that blew every other Star Wars figure out of the water. Not to mention the nice use of a fabric cape and bonus effects parts for his staff. Just like Ackbar, repeat the process Hasbro.
Noisy No. 8 – Qui-Gon Jinn Vault No. 8 – Riyo Chuchi!
This is another figure that I imagine is coming sooner than later even though the line has been more skewed to OT so far. The Phantom Menace doesn’t shine too bright, but Qui-Gon was usually around when it did and that leaves him high ranking on my personal list. And, hey, a good 6″ Liam Neeson figure would do wonders for my collection. Chuchi is a senator from the icy planet of Pantora, but most importantly she’s the cutest female character in the entire Star Wars universe. But unfortunately she has yet to receive an action figure. And now that we’ve got a six inch line, I don’t want to go back to three! So bring on the six inch Chuchi love, Hasbro.
Noisy No. 7 – Lando Calrissian! Vault No. 7 – Wedge Antilles!
I know. I know. Lando is a given. He should be up there in my “disqualify” list in the intro, but I just don’t care! My Star Wars Black collection will simply not be complete without Lando Calrissian. The sooner the better. Wedge is my favorite human in all of Star Wars. This unassuming X-Wing pilot saved Luke’s life during the original run on the Death Star. He destroyed an AT-AT and helped to defend the Rebel convoy as it evacuated Hoth. He escorted the Millennium Falcon into the second Death Star and fired the shot that destroyed the station. And he did it all without acting like a cocky nerf herder.
Noisy No. 6 – Shaak Ti! Vault No. 6 – Ahsoka Tano!
One of the best parts about the new trilogy was the thriving Jedi culture. We were introduced to a litany of fun, new aliens shrouded in Jedi robes. I wanted this spot to go to one of those Jedi and I was having a hard time narrowing it down. Mundi? Secura? Luminara? Bariss? There are some great contenders, but ultimately I have to go with my wife’s favorite Jedi: Shaak Ti! I had reservations about Ahsoka at first. She was a bit too “sassy-cute” for my taste, but as the show progressed I was glad to see her evolve into something that was worth watching. Like it or not, she’s become an important aspect to Anakin’s development and his eventual transition to Vader. A realistic 6″ scale version of her will definitely be welcome on my shelf.

  1. I notice that a few of Vault’s title bars have the wrong names, carried over from the MoTUC article?

Anyway, I am into Masters Classics so deep right now, I can’t recall the last Star Wars figure I’ve purchaed. I have hundreds (thousands?) of 3-3/4″ SW figures, starting over in a new scale is the absolute LAST thing I need right now! [^D

But there are a few random characters I would be more likely to be tempted by, should they happen in SWBlack. I will be watching especially to see how C-3PO will look with all that chrome articulation!

    1. I’ve got a lot of 3.75″ figures, but I’ve never been that committed to them, so this feels much more up my alley, but I don’t need them all…

A chrome 3PO would be awesome!

  2. Greedo’s cousin, Beedo. Obviously. };D

There’s only one other figure I would buy in the 6″ scale, and that would be Amanaman. Simply so I could get a few of him and have some proper-sized Amanin in my collection and custom fodder bin. (They’re supposed to be 6.5 – 10 feet tall, and apart from the comic pack version, the majority of the Amanamen so far have been a bit on the small side.)

  3. ok granted that 3po, chewie, lando, gammies, ackbar and wedge are upcoming must haves, then:
    1. bib fortuna
    2. oola
    3. wooof
    4. the emperor + throne
    5. hammerhead
    6. ponda baba/ dr evazan double pack
    7. k’kruhk
    8. ahsoka
    9. ventress
    10.cody

      1. actually i could add a few more to that list that i really really want:
        max rebo band
        yarna
        nikto
        weequay
        jawas!!!!!!!
        tusken raider
        ephant mon
        ermi oddle
        amanaman
        ree yees
        nien numb
        aurra sing

        and bloody YAKFACE!!!!

  4. I’m assuming that the 6″ figures will only cover characters that appeared in animated or live media, but heck with it. Here’s my list with a couple that didn’t in descending order:
    Tsui Choi
    Max Rebo
    Durge
    Darth Talon
    Asajj Ventress
    Ahsoka Tano
    Boga, fully poseable (Obi-Wan’s veractyl)
    Magnaguard
    Dexter Jettster
    Plo Koon (DAMMIT!)

    1. Oh, and I’d be willing to trade any other than Plo for an Arc Trooper or Republic Commando.

      1. durge is a good call… a very good call. i’d actually like an anakin too, but with ample influence taken from tartakovsky’s clone wars, certainly moreso than the current clone wars cartoon. genndy was trying to give us an anakin with greater depth, so we’d be cheering for him and when he turned it would hurt us more. durge also was cooler than later incarnations would make him.

i will say to noisy though… funny thought about moff tarkin… remember when vader told him the power to destroy a planet was insignificant next to the power of the force… i’d have responded, “really? you’re the most potent force user of all time, yet you were unable to keep your wife alive, nor your kids with you, you got julienned in a lightsabre duel by a modest duelist, and your most successful moment in battle came when you shanghaied a much more capable duelist WHILE he was engaged with a potent sith lord. in fact, your sorceror’s ways couldn’t even conjure those stolen data tapes… so why don’t you go wheeze on someone you’re own size, and leave the interrogation to the big boys, m’kay?”

        1. Tarkin has always been one of my favorite second-tier Star Wars characters. He’s the main villain of ESB, and far creepier than Vader for his attitude of bureaucratic banality while destroying planets.

I do hope we get a Tarkin. He’s a far more significant character to the trilogy than, say, Greedo. But as of right now, I’m unclear exactly how long and how in-depth SWB will go.

  5. No love for Ackmena? The Holiday Special needs some love… And Deadpool would love a Bea Arthur Action figure!! and having a Bea Arthur Action figure would be reason enough for me to use that Deadpool Hoodie I got as a birthday present!!

        1. He must watch it at least once in a lifetime… It’s the Sci-Fi equivalent of The Room… and I’m not sure if I’m insulting The Room or The Holiday Special.

  6. Boy, this is a tough list. I’d wager that 75% of any Star Wars line alone is mostly just army builders plus background and minor characters. We all expect Lando, Ben, Chewie, and Threepio, but there are hundred of others that are somebody’s favorite. And there are also so many categories: Aliens, droids, humans, Jedis, rebels, imperials, and the list goes on. I’m surprised both of you got to narrow it down at all!

I’ll give it a shot myself. Going with OT since those are the ones I’ve watched the most. I’m also using the ’85 POF 92 cardback as reference in addition to the ones I have in mind already.

    10. Baron Soontir Fel (Imperial TIE Fighter Pilot)
    9. General Madine
    8. Admiral Ackbar
    7. Emperor’s Royal Guard
    6. Admiral Veers (Imperial Commander/AT-AT Commander)
    5. 4-LOM (Zuckuss)
    4. Lobot
    3. Wedge (aka The X-Wing Pilot Who Never Dies)
    2. Tarkin
    1. Lando (either Original/Bespin or General)

Now, I fully expect Lando to be a leading candidate for either next year or 2015. I would place Yoda and Emperor Palpatine in the same category, but there are also the many lead character variations to take into consideration.

Of those, my top 5 are:

    5. Old Ben (Guinness)
    4. Leia (Original/White Dress)
    3. Leia (Hoth/Bespin hybrid look from Bespin escape scenes)
    2. Bespin Han
    1. Jedi Luke

    *Whew!*

    1. Great lists! Definitely hard to narrow down. We may see some future Top Tens here at IAT where we just go for Top Ten Lukes, etc. Throw in some polls and we got a regular feature!

  7. can i vote for a porkins? cuz i do. i want someone the entire rest of my figure collection can look at and feel superior to.

  8. Aayla Secura
    Ahsoka Tano
    Obi-Wan in Clone armor
    Admiral Ackbar
    Qui Gon Jinn
    Mace Windu
    Asajj Ventress
    Plo Koon
    Barriss Offee
    Tera Sinube

There are also a bunch of Clone Troopers I’d want, but they are numerous, and I’m waiting to see how Hasbro handles the clones.

I considered throwing characters like Lando, Yoda, Padme, and Darth Vader on there, but I really have to imagine they’re on their way. Even Mace Windu and Qui Gon are probably on their way at some point.

Really, my list leans fairly heavily on prequel and Clone Wars characters, not because I love them more than the OT, but because almost any character I’d give two shits about in the OT is almost certainly a lock for the Black series, while who knows how deep into the prequels they’ll ever get, and if they’ll touch Clone Wars at all.

  9. I gotta side with Noisy’s list, myself. except for Gonk and Gamorean. I had the original Gonk/Power Droid, and it was one of those “so goofy you had to like it” before it became a thing in most toy lines.

Vault’s list, I’d probably pick up armor Obi-Wan, but Jabba and esp Rancor, I’d have to question the logistics. Jabba could probably be the SDCC Deluxe prize, but an in-scale Rancor? sorry, I don’t see it happening.

I think Noisy’s list is a bit more practical, in that you know Hasbro is going to default to a handful of bodies, so best to start with that in mind. We’ve got Jedi Robes and ST armor bodies, and build from there. Lando will probably use as much as they can from Han, as will several Han variants. ANH Leia will likely be used to make Mon Mothma. Chewie will likely get a couple Wookiee variants. I’m sure the X-Wing body will see some variants, Wedge, Biggs, red suit, etc. The R2 and 3PO are base for numerous other droids.

Do we really want Tatooine Anakin and the youngling Jedi? I still haven’t picked up R2 as I can’t see myself paying for a smaller figure (compared to rest of line) at that same price point that’s not in a 2pk. Yes, this applies to Ewoks, too, which HAVE come in 2pks. Heck, even my current sole source, Target, seems to have stalled after at least three cases flying off the shelves, there are 10 figures now sitting for the past month, two full cases plus an extra Luke and Maul. No Army builders here.

  10. Assuming the rumour list is reliable, here’s my “realistic” list:

    10: Dengar
    9: Bespin Han
    8: AT-AT Driver
    7: Snowtrooper
    6: Hoth Luke
    5: Padawan Obi-Wan
    4: Jango Fett
    3: Hoth Rebel Soldier
    2: Alec Guinness Obi-Wan
    1: A-Wing Pilot (Green Leader)

And the “as long as I’m dreaming” version:

    10: Galen Marek
    9: Senate Commando
    8: Republic Commando
    7: Imperial EVO Trooper
6: Prototype Boba Fett (from the original figure’s card photo)
    5: Nite-Owl Mandalorian (female)
    4: Bo-Katan
    3: Pre Viszla
2: Death Watch Mandalorian (male, preferably with an alternate, blond mohawk head)
1: Obi-Wan Kenobi in Mandalorian armour

  11. I am in huge debate on these. Though I have not bought any Star Wars figs for my self in years. Yet 6″ black I have only seen a few stores and the kicker, NOT A ONE AT WALMART wassup wit dat?

If made a list I would not know where to start. The 1st clone wars I would love to see get some love easy. Have part of it in DVD. Who I couldn’t say and yet a Snow Bunny Padme comes to mind. (Atleast the web name of that outfit.)

Like the lists I see and do wait to see Chewie.

      1. Agreed on Chewie, can picture fun having him crossover fight with Grizzlor that and since my Atom Smasher has a loose arm. I think see where going there.

    1. My local Wal-Mart can’t seem to keep them in stock. I was there on Saturday, only to find that they’d got Series 2 in, and every single Boba Fett figure had already been sold. Went back on Wednesday, and they only ones left were a single Slave Leia, Darth Maul and X-Wing Luke.

  12. I did my own list like this a while back. Tarkin is my #1 most-wanted figure that’s even vaguely likely to be made.

As for Vader, well, the rumored list included him. He’s a foregone conclusion for the line, but honestly, Noisy, after waiting what, 3-4 years for Martian Manhunter in DCUC and 4 years for Ram Man in MOTUC, are you really giving Hasbro a hard time for not getting to Vader in less than a year? Hell, they’ve already given us Boba Fett and Darth Maul! I’m still a little shocked by that.

Vader, Chewbacca and C-3P0 are all members of the rumored list.

    1. It’s not flak so much as… incredulity? I’m curious to see just how long they might wait. And very true about Maul & Fett.

Four years for Martian Manhunter… that was interminable. At least they rewarded me with Jemm, Son of Saturn – a figure I’m sure I’m the only one who really, really wanted it.

  13. My biggest wants are the bounty hunters from Empire. We just got Boba Fett, so I’m glad with that, and I’m even glad for Greedo (though he’s not in the Executor scene for obvious reasons). I want the rest of them too! In no particular order, I totally want:

    IG-88
    4-Lom
    Zuckuss
    Dengar

In addition to that, here are some others that I want:

    Ventress
    Starkiller
    Darth Revan
    Darth Malak
    Darth Malgus

Clearly I like the bad guys…

      1. I like the heroes too, but your lists here covered most of the ones I want. The remaining villains just look awesome and would be great in 6″ form.

Oh, and I totally want Leia in her Boushh uniform. And Boussh it pretty close to Bossk. I totally want him too.

  14. Dash Rendar. That’s the only guy I want for sure to be made. Long shot, hell yes. But it’s who I want.

  15. Nice to see Ashoka on SOMEbody’s list besides mine.
I just think it would be a awesome-looking toy. She has a great design and I’d love a Black one. It’d be interesting to see one done in a slightly more realistic style and not quite so animated, but still look very much like the same person. They do it right and it’d be a knockout.

    1. It might be nice, but it probably shouldn’t be surprising. There is, after all, something rather unsettling about what is effectively a child-soldier wearing little more than skintight pants and a tube-top (or, alternately, a child-soldier in a sleeveless, backless tunic with a Power Girl-style boob-window).

  16. Well I thought up a list of a few.

Snow Bunny Padme: After seeing a pic and finding out the guy that plays Thor was Kirk’s dad and Portman is Luke’s mom this works for Artic gear Jane Porter (that the right name) Also now I hope we get a Bespin Luke we get a bonus “NO” screaming head and now I want Kirk screaming Khan to inact the pic I saw on facebook.

Ahsoka Tano: One of the many enjoyable characters from Clone Wars. Look, actually any would do.

Boba’s Harem of alien hotties: Just cause he needs them

Dash Rendar: I love Shadows of the Empire ’nuff said. Game was fun and book was great but I need a new copy.

Deathtroopers: Need to read but the idea is just gnarly

Stitches/Patches(forget his name): The clone that was disfigured but was kept around and died.saving the cloning factory. Really he deserves a fig jusr wish remembered his name.

Jawas: Give us two in a pack with the immobilizer and easy win.

Nein Numb: he piloted the Falcon along Lando in Jedi entitles a fig.

    1. Forgot the scout trooper, snow trooper and think thats it. Thinking of those troops that were in the old Toyfare strips. Need a jacket for the scout. Biker jacket that is.

  17. I no particular order?
    – all the Ewoks who received figures in the original Kenner line
    – Wampa
    – Aayla Secura
    – Jawas!
    – Aurra Sing
    – General Grievous
    – Lando (blue outfit)
    – R5-D4
    – Jabba the Hutt!!
    – Rancor

  18. Looks like I’m a little late to this discussion, but there doesn’t appear to be any love for the EU here 🙁
I’d love a 6″ Mara Jade (as long as Hasbro can get her head and hair right), as well as at least a wave or two devoted to characters from the Legacy comics. I missed a lot of the Legacy comic 2-packs, and 6″ versions of those characters would certainly make up for that 🙂
Also, I’d love to see 6″ figures of Ahsoka, Quinalan Vos, and Aayla Secura.
Also, if Hasbro wanted to truly capitalize on that Luke X-Wing pilot body, I wouldn’t be opposed to a box set of Rogue Squadron, or any other assortment of Rebel pilots. All Hasbro would need to do is give each figure its own unique headsculpt (much like Mattel did with their Ghostbusters line), and preferably, slightly tweak the uniforms.
