Top Ten: MOTU Classics
We’ll STILL Want To See!

A combination of camera issues and a busy schedule at work this week had me looking for a quick solution for content. I was thinking about what we post when it was suggested to me that everybody loves Top Ten lists! I thought that sounded like a not too bad idea, and Vault is always ready for a reason to skip a review, so we set out with a plan to do a couple quick Top Ten lists a day to get us through the week (though somehow I’m going to end up doing more work this way, I just know it!). Most of them will actually be “Top 20” lists because Vault and I decided to participate in both rather than miss out on one. For MOTU, I’ll run my Top Ten down the left in blue while Vault will have his Top Ten on the right in red. Should be fun to compare.

More importantly, we’d also like to hear the Top Ten figures as judged by our readers. If we get enough feedback, we’d be happy to post follow-ups using your answers.

We decided to kick things off with MOTU Classics. It’s still the most fun line we’re collecting (though there are some up & comers you’ll see later in the week) and there’s a laundry list of characters we still want even though line is considered by many to be in it’s “twilight”. Vault and I have each chosen 10 things we still want to see in the line before the curtain draws.

Now, I haven’t read Vault’s entire list yet, but I do have one caveat for mine: I didn’t pick anything that I was reasonably sure was already on the way. My No. 1 want is easily Rio Blast, but I’m feeling safe that we’ll get him. Similarly, I want Mermista & Eldor, I’m excited to see how they do Dragstor & Tung Lashor. I think all those are coming and they’re basically the RSTLN & E of MOTU Top Ten lists right now. So rather than make a list the same as everyone else, I’ve opted to make this a Top Ten list of who we’ll STILL want to see after Toy Guru is done marching through the vintage checklists. If I’m lucky some are already on the way, if not… well, that’s life. Now on to the lists!

Noisy No. 10 – Weapons Paks! Vault No. 10 – Melaktha!
I’m putting this one at No. 10, ahead of some characters like Darius & Slime Pit He-Man simply because I love having extra gear. The alternate colored pieces so far have (mostly) rocked & helped flesh out the line. I do want some “sets” complete (He-Man’s gear in Adam’s colors), but I’d love to see new ideas too. It’s said Weapons Paks are done with, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that we might see more beyond 2015. I always saw Melaktha as an important part of Eternia. He was the Royal Archeologist; appearing a few times in the Filmation series. I like the idea of normal people inhabiting my shelf with all the monsters and mutants. The figure itself would be a simple buck with a new head and clothes, but being an archeologist, who better to come with a small horde of rare artifacts?
Noisy No. 9 – Stridor/Night Stalker! Vault No. 9 – Snake Armor He-Man!
These guys exist on the bubble between pipe dream and reality. These two just feel like two big a part of the vintage line to skip over, but that might just happen. I, for one, hope not. They could share tooling and probably sell equally well, so Mattel should feel confident. If nothing else, a 4H sculpted robotic horse would have to look kickass even if it wasn’t MOTU. One of my favorite figures from MO2K was Snake Armor He-Man. I loved the idea that the Snake Men were so powerful that even He-Man needed a bit more help in dealing with them. While I wouldn’t be opposed to getting some Horde Armor to go along with it, the Snake Armor has appeared in continuity and deserves a first chance.
Noisy No. 8 – Battleground Marlena Vault No. 8 – Molkron!
Say What? Yep, Marlena’s Captain Glenn gear was a smart way to make her more of an action figure, but I loved seeing Marlena kickass in the MO2K cartoon and this has been a figure I’ve wanted ever since. Given a proper “classics-over”, I think she’d fit great in Mattel’s “Battleground” series and make a fine counterpart to the royal version we already have. The only question is, would she stay a red head? Now that we have the Staff of Avion, it’s only right to get the beast it summoned! Molkron is one of the more nightmarish creatures to come out of Filmation. Molkron always freaked me out a bit as a kid with his centaur-like body and tentacles for arms. Not to mention his flowing blonde locks. I’d love to see the Four Horsemen’s disturbing take on this Classics figure.
Noisy No. 7 – Tuskador! Vault No. 7 – Stridor & Night Stalker!
Tuskador makes my list thanks to Mattel’s downright shameful New York Comic-Con vote that cast Mara as the “NA Poll” winner. I don’t mind Mara one-but, but only 50-some odd people voted (were they all subscribers?) and Tuskador lost by one vote. Simply put, he needs rescued from the cutting room floor! Also, a recent mock-up using Ram Man as a buck made Tuskador absolutely sing to me. Snout Spout could use a friend. Two words: Robot. Horse. I think everyone had at least one of these when they were kids. And what’s not to love about them, besides the fact that they didn’t move at all? That’s where the Classics line comes in! The 4H have done amazing work on the technical details of the Wind Raider and Jet Sled, so I can only imagine how great these horses would be.
Noisy No. 6 – Calix! Vault No. 6 – Kulatak Chief!
Calix makes my list for sheer “toyeticness”. At this point, I feel like he’s surely not going to happen. He’s basically a 100% tool of a bit character that appeared for seconds before dying in the MO2K cartoon. Heck, I’d be curious just to see what Toy Guru even wrote in his bio all those years ago. You may balk, but look at him! Imagine the Four Horsemen sculpting a big, rocky menace to join your Horde ranks. You know he’d look cool in three dimensions, right? The Kulataks are Yeti-like creatures that live in the snowy north of MO2K Eternia. Their Chief was also one of the leaders of Randor’s council. With their oversized, beastly bodies, the Gygor buck with a few new pieces might be a perfect fit for these characters. For added value they could include an alternate Chief head, armor, and staff. That way we’d need multiples to form a Northern Army to battle Icer.

We’ll STILL Want To See!

  1. I’m glad to see all the ladies on Noisy’s side, but my big wants are still the POP gals. I’m not quite so sure we’ll get to all of them in time.

    Angella
    Mermista
    Double Trouble
    Entrapta
    Spinnerella
    Sweet Bee
    Perfuma
    Peekablue

    1. The line needs more ladies to be sure and I want the POP girls, but I worry they dominate the female spots over some Non-POP ladies to (as few spots as there have been admittedly). Double Teelas & Evil-Lyns hasn’t helped either…

  2. I’m not an expert on all things MOTU related, don’t remember much of the Filmation cartoon, and watched a mere episode or two of the 2002 relaunch, so I’m going the traditional route along with a couple of picks from both your lists.

(For argument’s sake, I’m assuming that Rio Blast, Ninjor, Tung Lashor, Sssqueeze, Gwildor, Saurod, Dragstor, and Blast-Attak are on tap for either 2014 or 2015 if Scott’s claims of completing the vintage line are on the level.)

    10. Melaktha
    9. Delora/Hawke
    8. Mantisaur
    7. Stridor/Night Stalker
    6. Sagitar
    5. Lizorr
    4. Spinwit
    3. Snake Mountain
    2. Point Dread & the Talon Fighter
    1. Eternia (Yep, I went THERE.)

    1. You did go there!

I like the NA love in your list, they’ve ended up as some of the best figures, but I worry for the lot of them. When TG is having a poll over an obvious guy like Tuskador, the outlook is bleak…

  3. -Yay! for some Melaktha Love!!
    -Yay! for some Veena Love!
-Yay! for some Hawke and Delora Love!!
-Yay! for some Weapon Pak Love!!
-I’d say something in Argentinian Spanish to support Camo Khan, but it would be considered politically incorrect (using faux Argentinian Spanish) but ¡Sí!
-BOOOOOOOOOOO!! to the Spirit of Evil… Not against the concept of it, just against his Filmation look!
    -Snake Armor!! WOOHOO!!
-BA Marlena!! I have two Randors, so I need Two Marlenas
-Illumina may be surrounded by a buttload of Red tape (the Mattel v. Santalucia saga that I don’t need to get into), but it’s cool to see some support for her.
    -Snake Mountain… Freaking BRING IT!!

      1. It’s a decently balanced list… They are great choices covering the He-Man side of the equation. And yeah, I understand why not using the POP side works for this list. (The POP side would need a whole new list to fill up) So, yeah, Y’all did good! My inner Keyboard Warrior is crying cause he can’t whine about the choices…

  4. Good lists, gentlemen.

Here’s my list in the spirit of yours (not including characters who had a vintage toy or are truly A-list)

    ~Red beast
    ~King Miro
    ~Star Burst/ NA She-Ra
    ~NA Teela
    ~Dare
    ~Oolar/ Savage He-Man
    ~Quakke
    ~Veena
    ~Illumina
    ~Imp

    1. Some great choices there too! I really wavered on Dare (& Skeleteen!), but I totally forgot about Oo-Lar & NA She-Ra! You have me rethinking my list! lol

  5. Great lists, my top 10 includes some of the sames.

    10. Stridor/Nightstalker – Because reasons! The will look amazing! and are cool toys alread
    9. Tuvar and Baddra (2 pack) – with the line ending and Two Bad already representing them, I am just not sure if we will see these two!
    8. Kulatak chief – My wants will be very 200x heavy
    7. Molkron – Wanted him since I saw him in filmation many years ago – could be done easily using swift wind buck imho
    6. Calix
    5. Phravus
    4. 200x Evil Seed – Like the other 200x guys, Not sure if we are getting him. Hes an on the fencer imho
    3. Lizard Man – I know he is on a lot of lists, but as a unique body he may be tougher
    2. Miro – I am not actually sure he will ever be made, but he is needed to complete the royal family!!
    1. Snake Mountain – I was actually fine with my 200x castle for classics… and wanted a snake mountain and was kinda bummed when they announced Grayskull over that!

    1. Some great pics! I would love Miro. It was hard to cast him off my list.

Lizard Man might not need to be a 100% tool. I don’t know how collectors would feel, but if he were “classicized” into the vintage line, he might be able to use some of the Snake Man parts.

  6. Rio Blast was always my favorite growing up, but I love him even more now that I see his striking resemblance to Ron Swanson.

    1. I thought of you when I intentionally overlooked him. I don’t know why, but I just don’t feel anything at the thought of not getting to him. I do want them to though, for you and the like-minded fans!

  7. If FORCED to choose only 10 slots, then I must say:

Lizard Man w/ remaining Castle Grayskull weapons
    Dragoon w/ Dree-Elle
    Melaktha w/ relics
    Calix w/ pile o’ rubble
    Veena w/ Power Sword Case
    Snake Armour He-Man
    Red Beast
    Illumina
    Lizorr
    Snake Mountain

SDCC Pack: Kothos w/ Sand Slug Kothos (Can be done in both colour schemes!)

But I’d rather everything on my list got made. Which ain’t gonna happen, I realise. ‘Cause it’d double the collection as it stands, now.

  8. The ones that come to my mind are:

    2002 Sorceress
    Battle Armor Marlena
    Captain Randor/Battler Armor King Randor
    Ice Armor He-Man
    Illumina

Really, the 2002 series had much better designs for the royal family. I’m also, admittedly, a sucker for cool armor and female warriors, so Marleena in that battle armor hits two of my triggers.

I want the Sorceress over Veena simply because I like the Sorceress’ design better. The bare feet and lower-back wings don’t do it for me.

While the Snake Armor is more iconic than the Ice Armor, I never liked the “single strap prom dress” look of the Snake Armor. The Ice Armor, on the other hand, with its shaggier loincloth and boots and fur poncho, larger bracers and shoulder armor, all in whites, grays, and pale blues, was pretty striking.

      1. I’d say, considering the options with the boots from Icer and Batros, they’ve got the bulk of the moulds needed for an Ice Armour He-Man already, and it’s only a matter of time.

        1. I think the only problem is “Where to release him”. They’ve done a good job giving us a Skeletor and He-Man variant nearly every year, but there’s only so much more time and so many more armors.

    1. I don’t know why, but the Snake Armor just seemed cool right away. I get the dislike over the exposed shoulder, but He-Man just doesn’t like to be covered up. LOL

      1. they have to do ice-armor and snake-armor variants..the coolest variants of He-Man across all genres of him

  9. I want one of each of those…and anything else related to the MOTU mythos please and thank you. I want this line to continue for at least 5 more years.

  10. 10: Colonel Blast / Inspector Darkney

I’d like at least one Horde captain style character to display in front of my Horde Troopers. Right now I’ve got my two clean ones flanking one of the battle damaged ones with Mo-Lar’s head (he’s a pretty good stopgap actually– he looks delightfully sociopathic in that armor).

    9: Fang-Or

My favorite of the minicomic background characters and I wouldn’t be adverse to adding another Snake Man.

    8 / 7: Ceratus (Caligar Chief) / Kulatak Chief

I’d very much like to round out Randor’s council.

    6: Vultak

A great design and he would help flesh out the Horde even further.

    5: Imp

Everyone else is getting their mini characters. Gotta round out the Horde.

    4: Evilseed 200X

The Filmation version doesn’t do anything for me, but I love the 200X design. He’ll round out the independent villains shelf with Geldor, Batros, Shokti and Marzo.

    2 / 3: Stridor / Nightstalker

For my money, the two remaining necessary beasts. If one gets done the other will too. It’s just a question of if.

    1) Roton

The bad guys need at least one vehicle. The Roton seems the most economical / likely.

    1. Great list! The horses are definitely a must and I can see the bad guys needing a vehicle, but be careful or we’ll just get a green Sky Sled. 🙂

    2. Crossing my fingers for Colonel Blast and Vultak to feature in the rumored PoP sub for 2014..
I’m betting on the fact that one of the 2 robotic horses will be announced for next year

          1. Hrm. I hadn’t thought of here for that (I keep hearing that POP mini-sub buzz), but it could be her. Scott said that he knew we’d all want it, so that would be hilarious.

        1. I’m beginning to think Stridor/Nightstalker aren’t slated, at least not for the beast spots. I now see them as out-of-sub figures with a heftier price tag. Robo-horses done right would just be too large and have too much new tooling to fit the price tag, even with a second repaint (Scott alluded to this in the Q&As). I actually think the second beast slot is going to a horse, fingers crossed that it’s Charger (Teela’s unicorn) with maybe a Teela 2.0 on the side. It is a PoP year, so I could also see it being one of those horses, especially since a Clawdeen must surely be coming in 2015 now that we’ve seen Battle Lion.

          1. Even at a higher price point they could be in the 2015 sub. The 2nd beast slot… I really don’t know what it could. I just hope I want it! LOL

  11. Kittrina who appeared in the episode “The Cat and the Spider” — I think it’s be a fairly easy figure to realize without needing tons of new tooling. Extra points for a Grimalkin statue accessory!

Melaktha who also appeared in “The Cat and the Spider”. He’s sort of a Jimmy Olsen or Alfred Pennyworth in that he has no real powers, but I think the character, though minor, is an important part of the Filmation MOTUverse.

Two demons from the Masks of Power minicomic —

Stridor / Nightstalker (large beast) — I would be all over those! With the potential for repaint, they’re gauranteed to get two sales out of it!

Roton — Sell it sans any driver a la Sky Sled and give me a display stand and I’ll get at least two…

Disk of Doom Skeletor — Not sure how many other folks out there actually want this one. I’m so completely stoked we’re getting NA Skeletor, but if we could get Disk of Doom Skeletor (his look in season two of NA) that would just be like the jimmies on top of a sundae.

  12. “This one’s tricky, so I’m just putting Hawke & Delora together. If I recall Delora was Stratos’ Filmation sister, but MO2K wife. Hawke was a Filmation villain, but the MO2K wife (?).”

Wait, Stratos had two MO2K wives?

    1. No, it’s even more confusing than that!! [^)

In the ’80s, Delora was first characterized as Stratos’ human wife. This version appeared in the DC Comics Mini-Series, as well as the “Siege of Avion!” Mini-Comic. FILMation, however, used the same name for a totally different character, Stratos’ Avian sister. They later used the same model sheet as the winged Delora to depict Hawk, a traitorous rival of Stratos.

From what I’ve heard, when the Mike Young Show was being put together, the PTBs were getting info on MoTU lore from contributors at He-Man.Org. But–! They got the two look-alike Avian women from FILMation mixed up, which is why Stratos’ sister on the 200X show is called Hawk instead of Delora.

Don’t get me started on how the UK LadyBird Storybooks rendered the character of Delora…

Of this whole tangled bunch, I really only would like a figure of the original Mrs. Stratos. :^)

  13. below is my wishlist

    1. Oo-larr (with a big honkin axe, mini comic sword and shield and Green Goddess as accessories) and Ultimate Skeletor (filmation head, demo man feet, alt 200x head, filmation havoc staff, bone sword, mini comic power sword) 2 pack
    2. Tuvar and Baddrah 2 pack
    3. Mini comic Tri Klops and Trap Jaw 2 pack
    4. Masks of power Demon 2 pack with the goblins and masks as accessories
    5. Snake Armor He-Man and silver armor MAA (with unhelmeted head and thicker mush)
    6. Stridor/Nightstalker/Bionatops
    7. Beast Man (re-tooled with Etrigan’s torso and an axe) and Stratos (re-tooled with 200x jet pack and human feet)
    8. Filmation Hordak and 200x King Hsss
    9. Filmation and mini comics Garn two pack
    10. Clamp Champ (without the bell backpack, “search for Keldor” mini comic head, old man head) and Fisto (without the brooklyn bridge armor, mini comic head and evil mike’s axe)

    1. Some fun choices. I like the idea of Ultimate Skeletor!

I kinda wish they’d do an Ultimate He-Man with different heads, armors, and gear, and then release it to TRU just to see how it sells.

      1. it would be good to see if He-Man would survive the retail test..the initial 2 DC v/s MOTUC 2 pack of He-Man and Superman seems to have sold well..
the remaining packs had wrong choices for DC characters..sucks that it didn’t continue..

I’m guessing that the original 8 back would sell well, if released at retail for a lower price..

  14. I’m pretty sure Lizard Man and Saurod will share the same basic body when they finally arrive.

I’m all for Red Beast and Damon (DC mini-series) to appear in the line.

  15. The thing I want most is a variant sub, or some other method of getting needed variants. I know many are quick to shout, “But they already got a figure!” But really, I’d rather have an awesome mini-comics Tri-Klops then a completely boring Melaktha. This line seriously, seriously needs mini-comics repaints of Tri-Klops, Trap Jaw, blond Teela, Caucasian Stratos and red Beastman. It also needs the Filmation A-list. Sets or subs, I don’t care. Just gimme gimme gimme.

    Also would like:
    – Rock Warriors (Golden Books)
    – Charger (Teela’s Unicorn) with Teela 2.0
    – Sharella
    – Stridor/Nightstalker
    – Roton
    – Battle Ram base
    – Armor, vests and capes pack: Adam’s vest in mini-comics colors, Horde Prime’s cape in green, etc. Anything that helps us put together figures that wouldn’t otherwise merit a release (mini-comics Adam is just a vest swap on a regular He-Man)
    – Slime Pit He-Man
    – The vintage accessory sets as figure variants (Scubattack Skeletor, etc.). These would be a cool way to refresh A-list figures while also delivering some of the better accessory sets. If they can give us all that gear with Flipshot, then we can get it with Skeletor. And with the figures themselves, I’d like to see some of the subtly tweaks (Alcala Skeletor feet and shins, Man-At-Arms armor sans fur sleeves).

    1. Variants are really tough. I want ’em, but there just isn’t a good place to release them the way the line is setup, yeah.

Slime Pit He-Man just missed my list. And I’d love to see some of the Accessory Kits redone 4H style!

  16. Here’s my top ten … goes as follows …

    10. Ninjor
    9. Ninjor
    8. Ninjor
    7. Ninjor
    6. Ninjor
    5. Ninjor
    4. Ninjor
    3. Ninjor
    2. Ninjor
    1. Ninjor

      1. eagerly waiting for Ninjor..hoping Mattel would go the extra mile on this dude..toss in an extra unmasked head and some additional weapons for the resident MOTU Ninja!

        1. I really hope they make him cool; I worry. He seems like a figure few love and they might just poop him out like a few others at his popularity level.

          1. if Ninjor gets some of the NA love, he will be one of the best figures made out of the hated blastic 🙂

  17. Filmation hordak
    Madame razz
    filmation angella
    filmation kowl
    filmation evil lyn
    filmation trap haw
    filmation clawful
    filmation perfuma
    filmation mermista
    filmation sweet bee
    filmation imp
    filmation looker
    filmation lizard man
    vultak
    dylamug
    200x sorceress
    filmation evil sees
    filmation marzo
    ninjor
    entrapta
    filmation teela

      1. count me in for filmation Hordak, Vultak, Lizard Man, EvilSeed and filmation Teela!
just one more character and we have a mini sub!

  18. I am interested in All the most Groovy and Obscure Masters of The Universe Characters! I would like MoTUC to include figures like:

    10: Fearless Photog
    9. That Guy who drove the Wind Raider on that Classic Poster
    8. Goat Man
    7. Those Cool Characters from the Model Kit Box Art
    6. Strobo
    5. Vikor
    4. Demo-Man
    3. Horde Prime
    2. He-Ro
    and
    1. Eldor

    The Ball’s in Your Court, Mattel… [^D

    1. ol’Goatie is coming in 2014..but with some of the largest lats ever seen..he also has a friggin war hammer with him! Frankly, the only guy missing from your list is Eldor (make him already Marty!)

  19. I hope Mattel does a Snake Mountain!!!

Also agree about getting Veena, Hawke, Calix, Lizard Man before the line ends.

    Really need the following too:-

    Crita
    Tuskador
    Prahvus
    Miro
    Dylamug
    Kittrina
    Lord Masque
    Lodar
    Lizzor
    Hunga the harpy
