Matty on Facebook: DC Classics 2010 Fan’s Choice Figure Announced

Last night on Facebook, sandwiched between a litany of unhappy Teela buyers, Matty revealed the winner of ToyFare’s 2010 Fan’s Choice Poll…

And the winner is…

My friends at ToyFare magazine ran a poll asking fans to help decide which character Mattel should add to the DC Universe Classics line. The votes have been tallied and the reader choice is:

Raven

Fans chose between Raven, Freddy Freeman, Toyman, Geo-Force, Libra, and Uncle Sam. Raven won by a landslide, so she joins DCUC Wave 15 in Winter 2010. To find out which competitor Raven beat by a two-to-one margin, pick up issue #148 on newsstands now!

Regular IAT readers may be remember Mr. Rant’s position on the poll when the characters were announced. He, like most of us, correctly guessed Raven would be the winner before the poll opened. While I have similar feelings to our curmudgeonly contributor, I’m trying to look ahead and figure out exactly which Raven we should be getting.

We poked a little fun at Mattel in our Beast Boy review because putting the “Titans together” on your DCUC shelf makes for an odd bunch. If you’re the type of collector that ignores continuity and scale, then you might not mind Mattel’s choices with the Titans figures. For the rest of us, they look out-of-place as a team: Kid Flash is an early Teen Titans version from the sixties, Nightwing is in his 21st century duds, the under-sized Beast Boy has a costume he wore briefly in the comics, but is originally from the Teen Titans cartoon, Cyborg is a full-sized adult, and Starfire is… well, the size of women in this line is wonky at best.

So where does Raven fit in? In the fan’s choice poll, they featured Raven in her One Year Later costume, but is that the costume Mattel intends to use? And is that okay with everyone if they do?

Here’s my take on the various costumes Raven could be presented in:

  • Original Costume: This is the first one that comes to mind. She’d fit in with Cyborg, Starfire, and the eventual Dick Grayson Robin. This is easily the most iconic look. Even the modern costume is a homage to this original.
  • White Costume (Not pictured): Same as her original, but in white because she was free of Trigon’s influence. This version is doubtful unless Mattel is looking for an easy 70/30 molded color variant.
  • One Year Later Costume: This one might not even be worth mentioning except that it’s the one Mattel/ToyFare used for the poll. She does wear this costume during the same timeframe that Beast Boy wears his animated costume. Scale issues aside, they would fit together. This version also has the bonus of Mattel not needing to produce a skirt piece.
  • Reincarnated Costume: Minus a brief stint in the OYL costume, this is what you can find Raven in since Geoff Johns resurrected her a few years ago. It’s similar to the original costume, but with thigh boots and a few other added details. This version would fit in with Nightwing, Cyborg, Starfire, and the rumored upcoming Donna Troy (if she is indeed in the star-field costume).
  • Animated Teen Titans: This might be one you hope you don’t see her in, but we’re mentioning it here because Mattel did put Beast Boy in his animated costume. Still, we doubt they’d go there.

Whichever costume we get, there is the Titans scale issue too. Mattel hasn’t given us a teenage girl buck yet, but with the teenage boy buck being better suited for a ten- year old, it might be for the best.

As it stands, if Raven is given a modern look and made using the same buck as Starfire, then we can continue building a modern Titans set around Cyborg and Nightwing. But if Mattel wants to give fans a New Teen Titans set, then it’s time for a teenage girl buck. I’d prefer them to make one that would match with Sinestro (the buck that should have been used on Beast Boy, Robin, and Kid Flash). But to do that, they’d also have to start using the Sinestro buck for the boys too.

What do you think? What costume do you want Raven in? How tall do you want the figure to be? Do you want modern Titans or classic New Teen Titans? Let us know…

  1. I voted for the costume pictured in the poll and that’s the one I want. I never cared for her old look, it wasn’t functional (and still isn’t). I do not want the TT cartoon costume.

    1. They did use that picture, but I’m guessing most of her supports just expected the old costume.

One thing I forgot to put in my article, the DCIH is in that costume.

  2. While the modern costume has more alluring details, the classic should be Mattel’s focus. But I do not want those high arches on her cape. I hated that on the two DCD figures.

  3. Original is the only one that makes sense!

The newer ones look hotter, but have Benes draw the classic and it’d look just as good.

  4. This seriously was a no poll/poll. We knew who was going to win the minute they announced the characters involved.

  5. I just assumed they’d do the one in the picture. Their modern style guides are out of date…beast boy…

But I’m okay with it, the old one is a girl in a dress and the other two are hotter anyway.

    1. I’m really curious about what impact the picture will have on the final figure. I think Mattel would do the pictured one outright, but the 4H may have different plans.

  6. Classic Look! make the skirt and cape/cowl from the same soft plastic that they made Mantis cape or foragers Skirt

  7. y’all are missing the most interesting possibility… completely NUDE! satisfy the perverts, and avoid all this “which costume is best” debate. HIOW!!!!!

  8. The Animated Teen Titans look is the one I’m hoping for. Even though it’s not the classic, it’s the only costume she has that doesn’t look like crap.

  9. I want the classic New Teen Titans Raven with the possessed four eyed Raven as the variant.

I wouldn’t mind if they just went the white costume variant route.

I hope they don’t go for the DCIH costume or Teen Titans animated costume. I could deal with the modern costume so that she’d fit in with the modern Titans already released.
