Toy Fair Armchair Coverage: DC Collectibles Starts Early!

DC Collectibles made a ton of announcements today via MTV, IGN, & USA Today! Twenty figures, two props, and a vehicle! Crazy stuff.

Of particular interest to me is the new Animated figures! We already knew about the TNBA Scarecrow for Wave 5, but we now have the full lineup: TNBA figures of Bane & Nightwing and a BTAS Mad Hatter! Also revealed, a BTAS 2pk based on Mask of the Phantasm. This 2pk will include the Phantasm (duh) and a BTAS Batman with a more grimaced expression. Finally, the big tease revealed: a 6″ scaled Batmobile! This thing will be 2ft long and cost $100 so it’s a space and wallet buster to be sure. Check out MTV’s Coverage to see the specifics including the figure’s accessories, scale, and an inside shot of the Batmobile! And, of course, those checklists are updated!

At USA Today, DCC revealed an all-new line that looks like it will try and take the place of DC Classics. This line, called “DC Icons” will feature pretty well articulated 6″ figures from all eras of DC Comics. Wave 1 is slated for Nov/Dec and will include Deadman, Longbow Hunter Green Arrow, Batman (Classics), & Mister Miracle from nU52. Wave 2 is slated for December and will include Hal Jordan with exo-suit, Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle, Lex Luthor & Black Adam from nU52, and a Pre-Crisis Flash w/ Cosmic Treadmill. Wave 3 is slated for February with a classic Superman & Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and an Atom set featuring a full-size Atomica, mid-sized Ryan Choi, and a tiny Ray Palmer. I’m not sure how many of these are need (and there are way too many too close together!), but some cool stuff like the Atom set, Superman coming with Kelex, and Deadman coming with a clip-on energy piece for other figures to show that he’s possessing them at least have my attention! If they’re DCUC Compatible and they cover characters Mattel missed? I’ll be there.

Finally, IGN got the TV news. Four news figures from Arrow including Felicity, Diggle, Red Arrow, & Captain Cold! I don’t watch the show, but there’s a plainclothes lady from the supporting cast. That’s great! Also shown was a prop replica Flash ring, and… the **** Dr. Fate Helmet. I’ve wanted that thing for so long! It was first shown over a decade ago, and it’s come and gone since then. It’s appearance on Constantine appears to have put things over the hump and it looks fantastic. I do miss the Amulet and I do absolutely hate the $500 price tag. The ship may have sailed for me on this one, but I’m glad they’re finally getting to it!

  1. Dc collectibles had better make a Wonder Woman in the new Icons line. We are so close to a nicely sculpted and articulated Diana…..

  2. SHWEET!
Arrow – I know Barrowman got his Merlyn figure the other day and was showing it off on FB.
I can see that Felicity going for a LOT of customs (much like Jim Lee Hush-Ivy head), starting with Lois, Barb/Oracle, and Carol Ferris, if not Diana Prince for the GA/SA WW fans. and that Dig is great civilian fodder, too, as well as the head being a base for DC-TV John Stewart? (David Ramsey and producers keep discussing it as much as the fans. #BlackDriver!) Cold looks to be a good civilian base, too.

BTAS – Dare I hope that Phantasm mask is removable? Body doesn’t seem to conform to the person underneath..and why am I not spoiling a 20+yo movie reveal? LOL

DC Icons – some of these look good (dat KELEX!!), but the SHINY!52 I’m not liking much. wait and see. #thriceburned

Fate/Constantine – we’ve only seen the Fate helmet once or twice, with only one dusty close-up, and word is NBC is about to drop the axe BUT is pushing the syfylys division to pick the show up as HELLBLAZER = they can make John truer to his comic version, as in smoking a LOT more, and getting a bit grittier. they know its got legs, BUT they can’t find the audience paired with Grimm, either ahead or behind it.

    1. The Phantasm figure definitely doesn’t appear to be compatible with the reveal. In that case, I’d almost rather not have the mask removable? Hmm…

  3. Loving that Batmobile! It’s much more “affordable” than I thought it would be! That two-pack is a must-have!

That Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle looks fantastic as well!

  4. A lot of these figures look so nice, but I’ve been burned by DCC’s quality control (or complete lack thereof) too many times to be excited for anything they put out.

    1. Same here. I’ve had more figures from DCD/DCC break, chip, or crack over the years than I can count. Within a few days of opening, 2 out of 4 of my BTAS figures were broken beyond repair. Can’t say I’m even remotely excited for these lines, despite really wanting to be.

    2. They’re apparently putting a lot of effort in to fix the issues that plagued the first wave of Animated figures – obviously until the delayed wave 2 starts coming out we can’t be sure of anything, but I’m quietly hopeful, since they actually gave a pretty detailed response on their improvements rather than a Mattel-ish ‘we’re looking into it’.

(None of my wave 1s have really broken yet – except one of Freeze’s wrists, which slots back together relatively snugly anyway – but I have been extra cautious about breathing too heavily near them, just in case…)

      1. I’ve had too many issues with DCC products to have even given the BTAS figures a chance. It’s nice that they’re making some kind of an effort with the Animated figures, but if that means they’re only being brought up to the usual DCC level of quality, that still will mean they have a higher lemon rate than almost any other action figure manufacturer.

  5. Damn. That Glen Lantern with Exo Suit looks kind of cheesy….but I must have it! And that Blue Beetle! Damn. With Transformers Combiner Wars, Masterpiece, SW Black, and now these, it’s going to be an expensive year.

  6. I really didn’t want to ever think about buying another DC figure again after the whole DCUC/Matty “experience”, but damn, some of these figures look NICE.
    The Atom set looks great.
Deadman is a must just because the 4H version was one of my least favorite (and least comic-accurate) of the mattel line. This new one is what it SHOULD have been.
I need another Flash like i need a hole in the head, but I gots to get that treadmill!
Same with Supes. can i just buy that robot separately? Please?
And I do kind of like that shiny Mr. Miracle.
    Well…here we go again.

  7. Love, love, soooo much love… I’m instantly down for anything Batman Animated (either style, preferably both) and that Batmobile will be mine even if I have to move to a bigger apartment just to accommodate it.

I quite like the look of the Icons line – I deeply regret not getting in on the ground floor with DCUC, so these are extra-tempting. Characters plucked from all eras, nice design – I hope there’s a decent longevity to the range.

    1. … Oh, and the Arrow figures look… creepy. Oddly, for figures more closely sculpted to resemble actual people, their dead-eyed, slack-faced expressions are far more disturbing than the more comic-based reveals.

Nice to see female characters and non-masks get some love, though. I’ve started to feel so sorry for Diggs; the regular and recurring cast has become so expanded in the last season or so, and now we’ve got the Arrow, and Black Canary, and Arsenal, and Wildcat, and… John Diggle. It’s like ‘sorry dude; no comic history, no codename’.

  8. I haven’t gotten into the Batman Animated toyline due to hearing of all the breakage/QC issues as well as the costs, but dang if that Batmobile is sorely tempting me.

  9. Wow!
Those new DC Icon figure look absolutely beautiful! And with much-needed improved articulation, I can’t wait to get my hands on these figures, especially the Deadman figure. He’s buff as hell!
And that Hal figure with the exo-suit=$

Not a big fan of the Arrow figures, but I can see where other people would be.
They look decent enough, and fairly articuklated to boot.

The B:TAS figures look good, especially Scarecrow and the Mad Hatter. That’ll always be my go-to version as I loved his appearences in B:TAS because Roddy McDowell knocked his voice out of the friggin’ park.

Never liked thst version of Bane though. He’s as horrible looking as the NU52 one to me.

Maybe it’s just me, but I just wish those B:TAS figures were more articulated. The sculpters really nailed the likenesses and colors, but the articualtion is sorely lacking. Add in the high breakibility factor, and they become something I can safely pass on.

  10. Wait are we really getting six inch DC figures again? I hope they add more articulation to the line, but sh*t that’s gonna be so kickass.

  11. Have to have that batmobile.

I still think for the most part DCUC was nicer than this new 6″ line looks, but I chalk that up to the body Eric sculpted. It was the perfect hero body. Mattel was the one that occasionally mucked it up. I still might give a couple of these DCC ones a chance.

Don’t want to get sucked in to the Arrow figures, but dang, some of them look really good.

  12. How well do thhose types of hip joints work on those DC Icons? I feel like they have been using them in a lot of the DCC toys and i am wondering how well they pose. The sculpts look great, but my wallet has limits with all the ML and BTAS/TNBA toys.
