Masters of the Universe Classics
2013 Club Filmation:
While the new Castle Grayskull is in the spotlight, the big news out of Toy Fair should be Mattel willing to take a gamble on Filmation figures by giving them their own subscription. It shouldn’t be too much of a risk, more folks should want these than they did the new figures in the 30th Anniversary line, but the Classics line overall seems to be running into some heavy attrition lately. The first crop is a nice mix: Batros, Shokoti, & Icer, but I’m not sure I’m sold on these yet. I have until March 4th when the subscription window closes* to decide. In the end, I’ll likely subscribe and take a gamble that Strongarm is in there somewhere. My real question is – if this mini-sub sells well, will Mattel ask MOTU Collectors to do two full subscriptions next year? Eek.
* – Mattel does say that subscriptions should combine after the first month (starting with Icer) if ordered on the same account, but I want to add that you need to choose the same shipping method. I made that mistake in 2012 and ended up paying double shipping on all of our 30th Anniversary figures all year.
2013 Club Eternia:
With Icer, Batros, & Shokoti forming their own subscription, that left 2013 Club Eternia with just two-and-a-half reveals: Mantenna, Castaspella, & some new bits for New Adventures He-Man. I’m still not sure if NA He-Man will either feature two heads or a helmet (via AFI), but the two armors are a great touch on that figure. I love the techno-vest that debuted at Toy Fair and I imagine I’ll be using that one in my display even if it’s not the “iconic” version of NA He-Man. Castaspella will feature clip-on energy, I love that. Finally, Mantenna looks every crazier the more pics I see of him! Four fully-articulated legs, four interchangeable eyes (via AFI), and his crossbow for good measure. I’ve been lukewarm on the character in the past, but I’m excited to get this figure.
Mattel also had some other tidbit to share. March will see the release of some protective clamshell packaging for MOC figures. November will see the release of the stackable, tiered stands (via AFI) we’ve been asking for, Rattlor’s armor is confirmed for the next weapons pack (via AFI), and finally an extra accessory – a starfield mask from the looks of it (via AFI) – appeared next to Clamp Champ in the case. It’s nearness to Clamp Champ apparently means nothing and Cornboy himself said that it was unguessable. I have no idea what it’s for, do you?
Oh yeah, and then there’s that big, giant Castle! If you’ve been poking around the Castle news, then you’ve listened to the people that have seen it in person (OMG! It’s Huge! Wow!) or, some of, the people looking at the pics online (it’s smaller! what gives?). As a person only seeing pics, I’m still pretty impressed by the size. It doesn’t look smaller to me since most of the images are looking downward at the Castle making it impossible to determine much of anything. There might be some issues with how high the floor sits off the ground (via AFI) reducing some height on the first level (close-up here via ToyArk). I’m hoping they figure out a better way to do the floor between now and the final version that will make a little more room on the interior of the castle.
It’s sad because the Castle look frikkin’ awesome and yet I have this desire to netpick it (can you tell I haven’t seen it in person??). The aforementioned floors. The ledge (I love it, but I think it’s messing with the scale and shrinking the Castle’s outward appearance (via AFI)). For the most part, I’m good to go though. I’ll bite my lip. But I am crushed about the unarticulated armor/robot. That stinks! Toy Guru pointed out that cut items – like the dungeon crate shown at MTVGeek! – can come out later, that the Castle is essentially a dollhouse and furniture could be sold separately. I so wish that was true for the robot/armor. I would’ve much rather paid for a fully-articulated figure down the road then get this giant immobile prop now.
Okay, okay, I got it out of my system. The Castle does indeed look awesome. It’s like a piece of art. I love the wood floors, the crossed power swords, that Scareglow’s key will fit in the back door. The new accessories (a mace & pistol) look sharp (via AFI). It’s going to be a great Christmas present to myself in 2013. Pre-orders have reopened on the Castle (now $275) at Mattycollector.
