Vault Review: The Big O’s Roger Smith (Figma EX 007)

Roger has pretty standard articulation.  His head, elbows, knees, and ankles are all swivel/hinge Figma joints.  He has ball joints where his neck meets his body, his torso (although it’s limited by his jacket), and his hips.  His shoulders are a Figma joint connected to a ball joint, while his hands are all swivel/hinge pin joints.  I’ m particularly glad they gave him a double jointed neck, making it much easier for him to look up at Big O.

The majority of Roger’s accessories are alternate body parts.  There is the standard set of five interchangeable pairs of hands:  holding, fists, fists with the thumb out, open, and open with splayed fingers.  All the hands are gloved and painted black.

Then there are his three alternate faces: determined and looking to the left, sunglasses on, and mouth open and yelling.  All three heads look great on the figure, but I’m really disappointed that he wasn’t given a fourth smiling face.  Roger isn’t a grimdark character and he smiled or had a pleasant look on his face quite often.

Aside from his Figma stand, Roger comes with two other accessories.  The first is an alternate left forearm which has its sleeve rolled back and is showing the watch he uses to signal Big O.  This is a super important accessory and I’m really glad they added it.  The second is a briefcase full of hundred dollar bills that he used in the first episode to pay a ransom.  This is a nice little touch, but unfortunately the money is painted on a panel and can’t be removed.

I’m also a bit disappointed that he doesn’t come with anything else.  As with Dorothy, there’s really no reason for him not to come with a tomato.  A tiny hourglass would have been pretty cool also.

This figure may have a few problems, but they’re entirely excusable because it’s an actual toy of friggin’ Roger Smith!  I never thought they’d make one, and I’m so happy to have it.  I’m not sure if Max Factory is going to make any more Big O figures.  I would love to get Norman, and Schwarzwald, and Angel…  Really I just want the entire cast.  But if it doesn’t happen, I’ll at least be content with the fact that Roger and Dorothy got some plastic love.

  1. Question…is that metallic Big 0 the $500 one i see on ebay, or was there a more affordable version? Man these are cool little figures…

  2. Great stuff! I’d only want Roger and Dorothy so I’m pleased as punch that these two got made, and they look real nice!

  3. I’m a super huge Big O fan too, and about DIED when the Figmas were announced. I think your reviews are spot on! My Roger came with a broken left shoulder pin, though, and I’m not sure how to go about getting him a new one now that it’s a while after the item shipped. Did you notice any problems with the articulation of your Roger’s shoulder, or of changing out his faceplates? None of my Roger’s faceplates seat themselves all the way back onto the back of his head. I’m worried that because he was a preorder the production might have been rushed a bit? I’ve got quite a number of other Figmas and I’ve never had these problems before.

Also, I have to beg, WHERE did you get such perfectly in-scale tomatoes and the piano for them? I want tomatoes for mine too!!

    1. Thanks Emily. Sorry to hear you had problems with your Roger figure. GoodSmile is a pretty nice company to deal with, and they may be able to help you get a replacement joint. Send an email to support@goodsmile.jp and explain to them how it came broken in package and the seller couldn’t help you out, also include a picture or two of your figure and its broken piece. It may take a couple of days, but they should get back with you and let you know if they can help.

I do think Roger was done a bit cheaper than a normal Figma. I didn’t have any problems with the joints on mine, but his alternate faceplates don’t fit quite right. It should take just a little bit of sanding inside the faceplate to work though.

Both the piano and tomatoes come from the dollhouse section of Hobby Lobby. The tomatoes come with a bunch of other fruit. If you’re set on picking some up, check out Hobby Lobby’s site first. Every few weeks they usually put up a coupon for 40% off of one item.

Speaking of tomatoes, I love that little angry tomato you made on your website. Very cute.
