SDCC ’11 Armchair Coverage
Day 2 & Day 3

While most of my time Friday evening and Saturday morning was dedicated to getting our three MattyCollector checklists updated, I was still keeping track of a few links I wanted to share when I had more time. With the San Diego Convention wrapping up today, I imagine now’s good.

Before I get completely past MOTU & DC, there were still some new Mattel items on Saturday. ActionFigurePics posted videos for the DC & MOTU Panels along with their own image galleries of both (DC Gallery / MOTU Gallery).

Also, Mattel put out some packaged MOTU Clssics samples today which allowed folks at TNI and Pixel Dan to beam pictures of the bios back to the rest of us. Those Bios (Demo-Man, Evil-Lyn, Icarius, Snout Spout, Bubble She-Ra, and Swiftwind are now added to my MOTU Classics Bio Page. Check it out!

Finally, Mattel also showed a few items beyond MOTU/DCUC that I didn’t really cover on Friday so I’ve got a few more Mattel links:

Young Justice. Does anyone want a Young Justice checklist? Primarily for the 6″ line, I mean? The 6″ line is tempting to mix in to DCUC. They don’t all work, but some do and it’s cool to see Sportsmaster, Guardian, and Kid Flash added to the six inch ranks. I love those bases. ToyArk has a nice 6″ Gallery and a 4″ gallery for good measure.

WWE. WWE is a huge deal, but it’s one I don’t know anything about. I was surprised to learn that the Legends line was going to go Mattycollector Exclusive, but I also realize that Vault bought a Slaughter for $3 recently. I’m not sure what you’ll find, but I have seen coverage of WWE at MWCToys & ToyArk. If someone knows of an excellent wrestling toy site with better coverage (I’m sure there is one), let me know and I can add it in.

Some other Mattel Quick hits: Voltron @ MWCToys, Ghostbusters Booth pics @ ToyArk, Action League @ ToyArk, Cars @ MWCToys, and Vault would be remiss if I didn’t post as least one Monster High link (via MWCToys).

Of course the big news to hit the net today was the Hasbro/Marvel panel. Toy Ark has coverage of the Panel & the Booth. We were shown quite a bit of new product and I guess I was a little behind. I updated our Marvel Universe 2011 page with the information for Waves 16 & 17 and some comic packs, but the panel was ready for 2012!

They showed the following figures: 2012 Wave 1 – Ultimate Spidey, Hulk, Beast, Beta Ray Bill, & Kraven, 2012 Wave 2 – Scarlet Witch, Punisher, Future Foundation Spidey (with a Paper Bag variant I think), She-Hulk, & Kang, 2012 Wave 3 – Angel, Nighthawk, Nova, Hercules, & Puck. In addition to that they showed some designs for a Jubilee. I’ll get a 2012 page started here in a few weeks, but pics are available from ToyArk now.

I’m honestly conflicted about MU. I don’t need to collect two scales of Marvel figures and I’m much more partial to 6″. That said – Beta Ray Bill, Nova, Hercules… I can see myself still grabbing a few. Also, that Future Foundation Spidey looks great – especially when the upcoming F4 3pk appears to be getting a running change to the Future Foundation Uniforms (via ToyArk). Regardless of what scale I’m buying, I’m in for the Masterworks and 2012 will be an excellent Fin Fang Foom (via ToyArk).

As I mentioned, Marvel Legends has returned and the Panel & Booth coverage links above will take you to picks of that stuff as well. We already learned that Wave 1 will feature BAF Terrax with Steve Rogers (& an electric shield variant), Hope, Extremis Iron Man (with a Stealth Variant), Klaw, Constrictor, and Ghost Rider (orange deco & blue deco versions). A Heroic Age Thor is also in the wave, but similar to Mattel’s All-Star program, he’s a heavy hitter that doesn’t feature a BAF piece. Cool.

While Wave 2 doesn’t have a firm release date, some figures are laid out for already, including Bucky Cap, Thunderball & Madame Masque (those last two will feature running changes where they become whole new characters, Piledriver & Madame Hydra respectively, as well as announced, but not shown versions of Drax the Destroyer, Big Time Spidey (apparently black & green?), and Daken. Buy all those and you can build an Arnim Zola. Arnim is pure Kirby goodness and it’s really going to strain my budget to afford him. Another cool tidbit for him is that, apparently the Red Skull recently appeared using a spare Zola body. The running change figures will include different parts so that you build this Red Skull version. I’m blown away by that.

Just imagine the simple logistics that would allow for. Think of all the DCUC variants (or earlier ML variants) that could have come with unique pieces that would let you customize the BAF/C&Cs? Even simple things like angry heads or different heads. I’m probably not going to go out of my way to build a Red Skull version, but the implications are awesome. As I said, ToyArk has pics in the links above, but also hit up MarvelousNews for more Legends pics and more Universe pics.

On other other note. Whether you read the panel coverage at CTR, AFI’s Twitter, TNI, ToyArk, etc., the panel appeared to really stress that the Marvel Legends will have “rocker” ankles. I wonder why they’d keep stressing that…

If you’re looking for some movie based figures, ToyArk has your covered with galleries for Thor, Iron Man, & Captain America. Plus, I’ll throw in a Superhero Showdown link for good measure.

Some other cool galleries:

Thanks again to all the sites beaming back coverage: ActionFigureInsider, ActionFigurePics, ASMZine, Cool Toy Review, Critical Mess, Hiss Tank, MarvelousNews, OAFE, Michael Crawford, Pixel Dan, Raving Toy Maniac, TFW2005, Toynewsi, & ToyArk.

  1. Gee, it took a few years, but Hasbro is finally listening to the Fansabout what characters and articulation the collectors and Fans want, and don’t hide behind a Baby eating Corporate mascot and “logistics”…I can think of another company that claims to do those things, and yet fails to make results that are satisfying… :/

  2. “the panel appeared to really stress that the Marvel Legends will have “rocker” ankles. I wonder why they’d keep stressing that…”

my guess is, they read the fan forums dedicated to mattel… consumers. i think it’s smart… S-Mart.

  3. Those new monster high dolls look like so much fun. 🙂 We’ll probably be getting a Toralei Stripe (the cat girl). I think Vault’s already locked in to the others. He’ll have a coronary if that spider-girl doesn’t win the vote to be in the next wave.

  4. On another note, with DC Classics being “canceled” and going to a mixed line, I see my hopes of ever getting the now “non-existent” Ambush Bug dwindling. Ambush Bug has been “non-existent” before but after that last terrible relaunch/whatever you want to call it, the chance of anyone else giving a crap about Golden Boy Irwin Schwabb is getting pretty slim.

    1. Yah, but Ambush Bug would need new tooling, because the proper look is thin and lanky and I don’t think the Deadman buck would do the job.

      Plus he’d need better articulation.

      And a ham sammich.

      1. The Deadman buck would be “okay” but none of the current bucks would really work for him if you actually wanted him to look right. He has no muscle definition. I’ve kind of reconciled myself to the fact that if I ever did get one he would be muscular and kind of silly looking rather than … uh… ill-fitted and silly looking as he should be. I’d love for a variant to come with his sweater or a button up shirt instead but that’s kind of a pipe dream. At this point I would be happy to see him at all, no matter what his end figure looked like. Any Bug would be great except for his original appearance and, regrettably, that’s the one with muscle definition.
