Mr. Rant to Toy Companies: “Do Better!”

I spend a disproportionate amount of my income on Mattel toys. As a result, many of my Rants are aimed at Mattel. I don’t like that. I want to spread it around, so to speak. Last night, Noisy gave me a revelation. I don’t have a lot to rant about on other companies because they’re not doing as good a job tempting me with their product as Mattel does. That, he said, is a rant unto itself...

I know that toy companies sure aren’t perfect, and I don’t expect them to be. But, what I do expect is for them to think and try. So here are a few pointers to help out those companies that are a little confused. If they’ll follow a few of these suggestions, they’re bound to get featured in my column more often than they do now.

Vault Review: G.I. Joe Arctic Assault Storm Shadow

I was hoping to get to this guy sooner, but the weather didn’t want to agree. The way I see it, it’s more fun to review a G.I. Joe in its natural environment. No, not the toy shelf. Joes were made for play. Figures, accessories, vehicles - all were made to be played with outside. At least, they were when I was a kid. So, with that idea in mind, I waited for the snow… and it finally came.

Mr. Rant asks, “why are there so many movie toys?”

The G.I. Joe section at my Wal-Mart sure seems crowded lately. All I want to do is go to my local Wal-mart/TRU/Target and pick up the newest GI Joe figures, but I can’t. I’m sure my readers know why. There’s no room for anything new. All the first run movie toys are still fermenting away on the pegs like house guests that didn’t get the hint that it’s time to go.

G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra
Shockblast & Night Creeper

JoeWeek is wrapping up her at ItsAllTrue.Net. We're skipping our usual Saturday figure request for this week so we can get caught up on Joe reviews. We were going to have the Crimson Neo-Viper and Doctor today, but our local Wal-Mart brought a nice treat today, the "Offscreen" ROC 2pk of Shockblast and Night Creeper! See, even when you're trying to get caught up, you still have to buy new stuff. It never ends.

ItsAllTrueReview: G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra Helix & the Pit Commando

JoeWeek keeps on rolling! In the bevy of movie Joes, two in particular caught a lot of folks attention, one for being unique and the other for being generic: Helix, a new Joe created as an unlockable character for the video game, and the Pit Commando, an army building Joe that comes packaged with 13 accessories including multiple guns, different headgear, and still more accessories.

Rise of Cobra Arctic Assault Snake
Eyes & Cobra Viper Commando

We had a great time at JoeCon. Nearly everyone we met was very nice, helpful, and loved G.I. Joe. The panels were exciting. The new product blew us away. In one word, it was awesome. There was only one bad side effect to the whole thing: since we've gotten back, we can't stop buying Joes. All of the ItsAllTrue Crew had been pretty good about not going crazy on ROC product so far. We knew it was solid, that there were some nice pieces in there, but we were holding out for some of the more 25th Anniversary figures.
