Vault Review: NECA’s
Pacific Rim Coyote Tango

Coyote isn’t completely perfect though.  In a general sense he has a nice amount of articulation.  His head, shoulders, biceps, wrists, waist, hips, thighs, and ankles are all ball joints.  Pretty much the only non-ball joints are his elbows and knees, which are hinged.  This sounds all good, but unfortunately most of it is limited by the figure’s sculpt.

The ball joints can be a bit more forgiving with a joints range, while his elbows and knees are the real pain.  They don’t even move a full ninety degrees, really limiting just how dynamic you can get.  Unfortunately I don’t think this problem is a result of toy manufacturing as much as the design of the Jaeger itself.  It wouldn’t be the first time a mech wasn’t designed with 3D mobility in mind.  You also have the issue that this specific jaeger’s armor is supposed to add support while using his artillery.

Speaking of artillery, and on the bright side of his articulation, Coyote’s twin cannons do move!  Each one is attached to a cool looking treaded track on the inside of his upper chest.  This allows each gun to swivel forward or back separately from each other.  I know you can’t see this in a picture review, but it looks damned cool too.

Even with the limited articulation, Coyote Tango turned out to be an excellent figure.  He looks badass just standing on the shelf, and his moving guns “action feature” is just fun (I know that sounds stupid, but it really is!).  I’m actually happier with this figure than I am with the original Gypsy, Crimson, and even Striker to a certain extent.  This line may have had a rocky start, but NECA knocked this whole third wave out of the park.  I can’t wait to see who they’ll do next.  (It’s Otachi, right?!?)

  1. Nice review!

I have heard of people who end up having bent-mortar cannons on their Coyote because they are made of rubber. Does yours have the same problem? While consensus seems to be that Cherno is overall the best of the Jaegers I personally feel Coyote is the best sculpted and painted, from online photos anyway.

Otachi and Slattern will probably be deluxe figures. It would be neat if they used translucent blue plastic with brown/black paint for Slattern, like Tamashii’s Burning Godzilla.

  2. Though not my favorite Jaeger design overall, I do love my Coyote Tango figure. Though articulation isn’t fantastic, I love all of the little details, and as the articulation is still better than the early waves, I’m happy.

  3. It may be a mistake to put Domo in the banner instead of the robit. Jus’ sayin’.

  4. I love the design on Coyote Tango but the restrictions on the articulation are exactly x what wrecked me about the previous Jaegers. That sucks.

  5. Do you think Pentecost ever said “Who wants to Tango?” While he was piloting that thing?
