Vault Review: Sci-Fi Revoltech
#36, Movie Iron Man (Mark III)

Iron Man’s articulation is definitely good.  He’s got revolver joints in his head, neck, shoulders, shoulder pads, elbows, wrists, chest, ankle guards, and ankles.  His wrist guards are just soft plastic that bend out of the way.  His knees are double revolver joints, while his hips are a swivel/hinge.  Lastly, the armor around his forearms and thighs can swivel.   Some of these joints do leave large gaps though, which can look ugly.

Mark III comes with only a few accessories.  Aside from his name plate, they’re all alternate body parts.  He comes with three sets of hands: fists, open with fingers spread, and open with fingers together.

The one accessory I was really looking forward to was the Robert Downey Jr. head.  In the preorder pictures it looked a bit anime styled, and I guess it still kind of does.  But I don’t think it looks very much like RDJ anymore.  The sculpt makes his cheeks look chubby, and his head to look too large overall.  What really bothers me is goatee that looks like it was scribbled onto his face with a marker.

One of the cooler things about this figure is that the battery in the center of his chest lights up.  The battery is turned on by a tiny switch inside chest.  This allows you to leave it on for as long as you’d like, which was really a bonus while taking pictures.  The light is also super bright and is a bit hard to look directly at.  This is a nice feature that they’ve added, and I wouldn’t mind seeing a War Machine with a light up chest in the future.

I have very mixed feelings about this figure.  On one hand I love his articulation and light.  Plus, he’s pretty much in scale with Marvel Legends.  But on the other hand his alternate head turned out pretty awful, and mine’s already beginning to chip paint.  If you really want this figure, I’d suggest shopping around for a sale or clearance because full price is way too much to pay for all these issues.

  1. Yeah, I just don’t think this is a very good representation of the movie suit, plus that abdominal armor just looks silly. The head has a passable likeness, though.

    1. The head actually turned out looking better in the pics than in person somehow. Weird…

        1. It’s super impressive. It started as a Walmart exclusive when Iron Man 2 came out, and was rereleased in the Iron Man series last year. Once you start moving it around you notice how awesome it is in its design.

  2. The light really is blinding. I had to add that. Also, Vault didn’t show a pic, but that switch is really ridiculously tiny and you have to take off his torso to get to it. It’s not on the figure, but inside of it which, if you are getting this to actually play with, is a bit annoying.

  3. In some of those pics, the human head looks like Nathan Fillion is playing RDJ in an SNL sketch.

  4. How much does this cost? He really looks godd, althrough it my be better to buy the hasbro mark IV version
