This is at least the first one this year and its June. That’s not good. Part of it is just me being annoyed about missing the SDCC Tops 2pk last year. I missed both times they were available online and it broke my completist streak. I can’t complain – 7 years of not missing a product is a good run, but the eBay price for those Tops got dumb fast and every time I muster the gumption to spend the money the damn thing always costs more than the last time. True evil.

Anyway, after that, I haven’t even opened all the MOTUC figures. All the Club 200x stuff is still in box. The Laser figures still in box. All of this year’s figures are still in b- well, I did open Trap Jaw! That’s a start. One of the reasons I was really thinking about MOTUC lately is the run of disappointing news. Snake Mountain is up in the air if not crashed and burned. I started to make a site at SnakeMountain.net to help push for it, but it just feels pointless. There’s no SDCC exclusive this year (which considering last year, is a blessing in disguise I guess). And then there are all the delays. MOTU Classics just seems rudderless. For the first time, I have serious doubts about the future. It’s weird times.

None of this has anything to do with old Trap Jaw here though. I just felt like opening one up and taking some pictures. Trap Jaw is the most recent figure so I opted for him instead of going back to pick up a year-old figure that’s been sitting around waiting. So much for first come, first serve.

I have to admit that I only like these Filmation figures as kind of cool novelty, but even after opening Trap Jaw – I’m not super into him. I signed up mostly for Evilseed & Clawful more than simpler versions of figures I already have. But maybe it’s just that I’m rusty n the MOTU love front and I need to get back into it. I’m curious to hear from all of you – how are you receiving the Filmation/2.0 figures?

The technicals are still good here. The basic buck isn’t changed. Though Trap Jaw strangely got a new torso that’s raised to meet the harness on his right arm, but they reuse those ol’ Trap Jaw upper thighs for the umpteenth time. And I do love the new pieces. The new head sculpt is fantastic. I think I like it better than the regular version. It just has more personality. The jaw is new to match the cartoon and gone is the Walking Dead tongue behind his steel mouth. I like that on the original, but it doesn’t need to be here, so good call. The lower legs are well done and the design thankfully covers up the super useful, but ugly new ankle joints. The simpler loincloth is present along with a simplified belt. He looks good all put together and I find myself liking the bright colors. Continue to Page 2…

The arm, the key part of any Trap Jaw figure, is well done. It’s simple & clean, but that’s perfect. The attachments (his only accessories) all crack me up – the fly swatter, the energy bow, and the Filmation version of his rifle arm. They all swap out easily for one another and appear to be universal with previous pieces. The only weird thing is that I keep trying to bend that arm at the elbow and there’s no joint there, damn it!

Articulation is a little better than the Classics figures (minus that elbow joint on his arm). The ball neck has decent range as do the ball shoulders & hip, the hinge elbows & knees, and the swivels at the biceps, waist, and thighs. The Filmation body has a couple goodies though with the ball wrists and the much improved rocker ankles. Both of these joints really open the poses and their addition is much appreciated.

The paint is simpler on these Filmation figures, but what’s here is mostly well done. The only issues I had on mine were at the edges of the face. I guess the red highlights on the cheeks are supposed to be there, but the edge of paint is rough in spots. The eyes & brows are sharp though and the colors on the body match up well despite some being paint and others molded.

Overall, I know this figure is more fun than I feel like is. He was fun to photograph and he looks great. The MOTU Classics formula is still working – my time away has just dampened my enthusiasm a bit and the lack of news at Mattel has really taken a toll. These Filmation figures could be a great thing, but not if we only have He-Man, Skelly, & 3 of his henchmen. That really struck me when I put Mer-Man into one of the pictures. I’d love to see him done this way, in Filmation style. Maybe that’s the secret for Trap Jaw. I can’t get as excited because I don’t love him to start with. A fellow collector who hated on the idea of these sounded like a Pod Person when He-Man arrived earlier this year. He was converted. That’s a good sign for Mattel as long as they keep churning these puppies out.

Recent MOTU Classics Reviews:

For all our MOTU reviews, check out our
MOTU Classics Collector’s Guide.

“I’ll show you who hasn’t got a mind!
