No, what scares me is losing what I have in my hand now… what scares me is losing the people I love.”<\/em><\/strong> – Gwen Stacy, Spider-Woman Earth-65. <\/p>\nIt never fails that if you try a theme week, something stressful & unrelated to the stress of a theme week happens. I got through all but two of the reviews this time. That\u2019s something. So I\u2019m going to try and focus here and get this done. There already aren\u2019t any really funny pictures, so there\u2019s that. It\u2019s a shame because Spider-Gwen sorta deserves better. <\/p>\n
The first thing about Spider-Gwen is that she\u2019s barely a year old and *boom* here\u2019s her figure. That\u2019s impressive. And it\u2019s not just that she has a figure that quick, but it\u2019s that she\u2019s everywhere. I have to admit that I\u2019ve not personally read anything she\u2019s been in (I want to), but I see her all over social media with images taken from the books, fan art, cosplay, etc. Spider-Gwen caught on. She caught on so well, that she didn\u2019t even get to keep her name \u2013 she\u2019s Spider-Woman. And after all the dust up over calling the new Thor, well, Thor. It amazes me that we just accept calling her Spider-Gwen with little no problem. It just seems to be kitschy along with the rest of her and its good. It\u2019s the actual name of this figure. It\u2019s the title of her solo book. It\u2019s for clarity and no one cares. Sorry, Thor\u2026 & Thor. I still think we need a Spider-Peter book, but maybe that\u2019s just me. <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\nAs any Spider-Man fan knows, when Peter had started to maybe accept Uncle Ben\u2019s and wasn\u2019t feeling particularly tortured anymore, they decided to ice his girlfriend (comics really don\u2019t like wives & girlfriends) by throwing her off a bridge. I pick on it, but it\u2019s a great story. Some folks have gone back to it and identify it as her being \u201cfridged\u201d, even in Spider-Gwen\u2019s own dialogue, but it really did having a lasting impact on the character & the fans. It wasn\u2019t cheap. You can\u2019t just not kill supporting cast to avoid fridging, it\u2019s more about how you do it and Amazing Spider-Man #121 did it pretty well. <\/p>\n
In the Spiderverse crossover, which I really want to read, Spider-Man from all across Marvel\u2019s multiple realities had to get together to stop a multi-world threat. And the idea of a universe where Gwen got bit and Peter died really is kind of obvious. DC actually did something similar with Kyle Rayner\u2019s girlfriend Alex \u2013 the original girl in the fridge, where she had become Green Lantern and Kyle was dead, but it was brief. The obviousness though isn\u2019t a bad thing \u2013 it\u2019s more like simple genius followed up with what I assume is flawless execution. Spider-Gwen is, \u201cso hot right now\u201d. <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\nAnd so we have her clearly fast-tracked figure. It was a must by for me because I\u2019m a total sucker for something culturally popular and for new characters getting their due in toy lines. I want plenty of old characters \u2013 I waited my entire life for a Hellcat and still don\u2019t have a 6\u201d Firestar, but I like the lines mixing it up. When I see the concept that certain older characters \u201cdeserve\u201d toys first, it makes me want to jump in the computer and punch people in the face. It\u2019s such a flawed, dumb argument because it\u2019s always the characters that that person wants<\/em> that \u201cdeserve\u201d to be made first. It\u2019s asinine. <\/p>\n So fans of Spider-Gwen, seemingly many & vociferous, should rejoice because she\u2019s here and she\u2019s pretty good. I\u2019ll get the one knock out of the way \u2013 I\u2019m not totally a fan of this buck. I love Hasbro for making a shorter girl buck. Mattel screwed the pooch on that for DCUC royally. I have trouble posing it and getting it to stand on a few of the uses, but it\u2019s not bad. What\u2019s weird to me though is that it\u2019s a teenage girl buck. Mayday Parker? Teenager. Ultimate Spider-Woman? Teenager. Arana? Teenager. White Tiger? Teenager. Spider-Gwen?<\/p>\n Well, technically, she\u2019s 19, and honestly I can\u2019t complain because when she\u2019s talking to our Peter Parker, the height shown is about the same as what\u2019s been done. It\u2019s just weird though, okay? Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n With that out of my system, let\u2019s move on because there\u2019s good stuff here. She has enough accessories for a coupe different looks: masked & unmasked. In full gear, you\u2019ve got the hood and the masked head. I\u2019ve mostly stuck with that on my shelves. There\u2019s also the unmasked head which creepily looks like Emma Stone. She was Gwen Stacy in the movies recently, so I get it. But it\u2019s still weird. It\u2019s not like the movie Cap looks like Chris Evans, y\u2019know? Zing!<\/p>\n The neat part about the unmasked head is that the last accessory is the hood folded down. I love this. It\u2019s the kind of little detail that you want and that lets you know someone up at Hasbro cared for a few minutes. I do wish we got some alternate hands here. She\u2019s kinda stuck in that zone where Spidey used to be where we\u2019ve got to get the fist & thwip hand locked in. It\u2019s frustrating because there are other hands on the figures that share this buck. If they were all just removable?<\/p>\n The articulation is the one way the buck frustrated me a little, mostly at the ball-jointed hips. They work fine, but I just have trouble for some reason. Lots of good articulation elsewhere: ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and inverted ankles; swivels at the thighs and boots, double-hinge knees, and the torso joint. She can\u2019t quite pull off as many good poses as Spider-man can, but there\u2019s plenty of fun to be had. <\/p>\n The paintwork was probably the most important. Gwen has a 21st century digital costume and there was a lot Hasbro needed to get right. The webbing in the crimson areas for one, that\u2019s on the higher difficult side. So was keeping the white white and the black black. But the purple overspray on the eyes was crucial. And Hasbro got all of it. They nailed it.<\/p>\n Overall, I\u2019m pretty happy with getting the figure and happy with how well it was executed. It is the right buck despite my misgivings, the articulation is useful despite the limited hips, the newly sculpted pieces are spot on \u2013 even the unwanted Emma Stone likeness, and the paint work is near phenomenal for a mass-produced toy. And extra points to Hasbro for getting the figure out so quick.
