I’ll try to not let Baseball screw up the schedule too much (I’m in a good groove after that long absence), but I’m a born & blue Kansas City Royals fan and they haven’t won a World Series since I was in Kindergarten… I’ll try to stay focused!

If there’s any one thing I could impart to my fellow toy collectors about toy collecting it’s to keep an open mind. I’m all for finding reasons to turn down stuff, to save money & stay on a budget, but if I’ve learned one thing over and over it’s that you just can’t judge most figures until you have them in hand.

I’m struggling to keep up with this DC Collectibles Animated glut at the end of the year. Don’t get me wrong, DCC was aces to push things back and get the figures done right (& they have). But after six figures, Roxy Rocket, & the Batmobile in the last five weeks, I think I’m up over $300 and that’s not including what I’ve spent on diapers. Also, there’s still six more figures due out in the next few weeks. They’re great figures, so I’m stoked, but let’s just say that I hope my wife doesn’t read this paragraph.

Anyway, as I’m working to keep up, these little budget questions pop up. The obvious one for this line is choosing between BTAS & TNBA designs (I can’t), or between heroes & villains (I can’t), or just cherry-picking favorites (I can’t). There is still low-hanging fruit, based on decades old likes & dislikes that you think maybe you can skip. TNBA Robin was supposed to be one of those.

I haven’t skipped anything yet though, so I dutifully picked up Robin yesterday. It wasn’t easy. He’s such a little guy for $25, but I reminded myself that I also paid $25 for Man-Bat, so I figure DCC and I are square. Also, funny sidenote, I also didn’t buy hi because I thought his accessories were missing due to some packaging error. You can’t really tell in the packaged shot, but they’re tiny, they’re black, and they’re packaged against a black background. It’s pretty good camouflage. Luckily, I turned it to the right angle and all was revealed, enabling my purchase.

Once I got him out of the box and took a few pictures, any qualms I had about buying him disappeared. The Robin redesign is still among my least favorite and I’ve never liked the all-red look, but playing around and photographing the figure just revealed this ineffable quality. He’s just a fun toy. I haven’t opened all of the DCC Animated figures yet, but this one feels like he’s the most benefitted from the early issues. He feels like a toy. He doesn’t feel delicate, none of the joints are stiff; he’s just fun to have. Continue to Page 2…

And the visuals finally speak to me as a result. The hair is fun. The giant noggin’ isn’t a distraction. And the all-red costume, well, I still miss the green. But the figure looks great and is spot-on to the source material, so no complaints there.

The articulation gets points for being a lot less fragile and giving the figure some decent range – I would like to see more out of some areas like the neck and shoulders (and I still miss those bicep & thigh swivels), but there is plenty of useful range for some good poses here thanks to the ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, & inverted ankles; the waist and boot swivels; and the h-jointed hips. I do have a little trouble getting the figure to stand now and again, but I’m chalking that up to the aesthetic of the sculpt. The articulation can usually compensate once you strike the right balance.

Pain was one area where I wish the figure were a little bit better. I got to pick the less sloppy of the two, but I still ended up with a Robin that has a dirty face on the right side thanks to some black slop. The yellow paint was much better on the one I chose (and that’s why I chose it), but it left me hoping most folks wanting one does in fact get to pick from at least two. You may need to.

Robin included the usual stand (thankfully with the more space friendly waist clip), seven hands, handcuffs with a real chain, a tiny batgrapple, and a tinier batarang. I was kinda hoping for a bigger item to offset the smaller figure, but the accessories we did get our great. The batarang is neat, I just hope I don’t lose it, the handcuffs are fun, and the bat-grapple is cool, but kinda rendered pointless by the seventh hand which has it molded into it. The hands include a set of fists, gripping hands, and batarang hands. They pop on & off easily and help the figure’s versatility.

Overall, this one just caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I do, so Posnanski’s Plus/Minus system is probably in play, but I don’t care. He’s a fun little guy that looks great with Batman visually, has some sharp articulation for good poses, and a couple neat accessories. His head is still too big, but I don’t have a time machine to go back to the 90s to do anything about it.

For all our Reviews, check out our Review Index.

[6,34,10
70,2333,562,2427
https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_0164.jpg?fit=923%2C923&ssl=1&resize=350%2C200
DC Collectibles’
