I’ve got a lot riding on this kill, and I need the cash. <\/em> – Bossk, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Lethal Trackdown” (2010)<\/p>\nWith Force Friday coming up at the end of this week, I figured this might be a good week to get caught up on Star Wars! The Black Series Checklist is still shy the SDCC announcements and I\u2019ve got more than a few 6\u201d figures in my unopened pile. I\u2019ve let go being a completist with the line \u2013 I just couldn\u2019t spend $20 on that tiny off-model Yoda. I skipped the Emperor and the various Clone Troopers \u2013 well, heck, it\u2019d probably be easier to point out which ones I did buy: the Bounty Hunters! (Though, what\u2019s a guy gotta do to find a Wampa\u2026?). <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\nThe Bounty Hunters in Star Wars \u2013 I don\u2019t know why I like them. I like to make fun of them \u2013 so many of them seem to have this strange appeal despite doing basically nothing. Greedo\u2019s toast nearly as he appears. Boba Fett gets Han giftwrapped, then gets accidentally bumped into and dies on screen \u2013 yet that blank slate created the ultimate badass. And the other Hunters\u2026 well, they did less than that. One\u2019s a prop. <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\nBut yet, they\u2019re such an interesting little subgroup. Though I\u2019m not really familiar with any of it, the EU & subsequent shows have given some of them new life. It\u2019s not really about that though. For me, it\u2019s more about look and the scale. While I haven\u2019t been impressed by the recent Lukes and don\u2019t need an army of Troopers, I do like getting the aliens in 6\u201d scale. I have a mostly 6\u201d collection and the Bounty Hunters, being somehow cool in their own right, really add something to that collection. And first among those for me is Bossk. <\/p>\n
Bossk is the coolest of the Bounty Hunter group that debuts in Empire (technically, Bossk\u2019s figure came first, but that\u2019s details). I don\u2019t care about Boba Fett. IG-88 is funny, but not intriguing. Dengar is hard to love. And I don\u2019t have much of anything clever to say about 4-LOM & Zuckuss (I\u2019ll buy all the figures though). Bossk, meanwhile, is this cool lizard dude in a pretty sweet flight suit. <\/p>\n

<\/center><\/p>\nHe also tends to get the cool toys. His vintage figure is a favorite. He\u2019s had good upgrades over the years. Heck, even his \u201cHero Masher\u201d is pretty darn cool. So it\u2019s a no doubter that his 6\u201d Black figure is swanky too. And the reason for all that? It\u2019s because he\u2019s got a not-costume costume. His suit is actually a real life Royal Air Force suit, High-Altitude Windak Pressure Suit. It can also be seen in an old Doctor Who episode and is worn by one or two other background characters (bring on BoShek!). There\u2019s just an authenticity that comes through because of its origin. I love it. Wrap it on a very Star Trek looking alien and *boom*, I\u2019m sold. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n So the sculpt doesn\u2019t share any main parts with other figures as a result of it being pretty faithful to the screen. All the little details \u2013 hoses, piping, etc. are all there. Even the missing cartridges on his belt are the right ones that were missing on screen. It\u2019s really well done (bring on BoShek!). The sculpt on his Lizard bits are similarly sharp. I love the big feet and the arms. The head sculpt is solid as well, but I think it comes off a little less menacing than his brief appearance on screen. It would\u2019ve been nice to capture some threat on his face. <\/p>\n Articulation is pretty standard and on the high end for the line: ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and inverted ankles; double-hinge knees; swivels at the thigh & boots; and the mid-torso joint. Most everything works well though I find the mid-torso joint limited and the ball-neck is a little different. The post & ball are on the head and peg down into the neck instead of the other way around like the rest of the figures. It\u2019s a tight squeeze there, but if you an work the head out a bit, you can also access the hinge jaw for some fun poses. <\/p>\n The paintwork is pretty solid. A light wash on the scales give them some depth and most of the costume details are painted well. The black paint was a little more sloppy than I like, but it\u2019s within the usual bounds. <\/p>\n So the sculpt doesn\u2019t share any main parts with other figures as a result of it being pretty faithful to the screen. The coolest feature is that you can sling it over his shoulder and have him hold it just like his brief appearance on the film. It\u2019s a well sculpted piece with the soft plastic strap. I would like it better if both hands were gripping hands, but you can find a few poses where he uses to hands convincingly. <\/p>\n Overall, Bossk always gets the best figures and this is no exception. The visual translates well and looks great thanks to some sharp paintwork. The arm and leg articulation is what we\u2019re used to and works great though the articulation in the torso could use a little more range. In all, Bossk is one of the coolest Bounty Hunters and it\u2019s only fitting he should get one of the coolest figures.
