<\/a>“Scott, I need you to be the Ant-Man.”<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Hank Pym to Scott Lang, Marvel’s Ant-Man. <\/p>\n

My Marvel Select Ant-Man didn\u2019t arrive on time, darn you FedEx!!!, so I\u2019m having to switch reviews up a bit. Today\u2019s review will quickly focus on LEGO set #76039 Ant-Man Final Battle. I was going to toss this one up on the weekend because the set contains spoilers – seriously, right on the box! Don’t scroll down!<\/strong><\/em> so stop now if you\u2019re really intent on going to the movie cold. I say could, because I haven\u2019t seen the movie yet, but I assume the LEGO set has given me a few more clues than I would\u2019ve preferred. So I\u2019m giving everybody an out right now! <\/p>\n

The set contains a few different highlights. The biggest part of the set is the ant. I personally don\u2019t care a ton about this piece. I like LEGOs for big set pieces and the minifigures, so this big ol\u2019 bug wasn\u2019t really a selling point for me, but at $20 it feels like a good set and the Ant is cool. He\u2019s articulated well with moving wings, head, and abdomen all having pretty good range. <\/p>\n

The legs can also rotate around, but are limited to that movement since they\u2019re connected to the body via technic pieces. There are some other cool features, like the aforementioned wings being a thin plastic, the pincers opening and closing, and that there are more than a few spots for a figure to sit or stand so that\u2019s cool. On the bug side of things, also included are two little ants for Ant-Man to team-up with. <\/p>\n

The main draw here for me though is the minifigures. Unlike Hasbro LEGO didn\u2019t shy away from Yellowjacket (yay!)! Unfortunately, translating his design to LEGO was not free for complications. The design to build his harness out of LEGOs is really bulky and the weight just drags him down. He\u2019s a cool figure with great tampos and a new helmet, but he\u2019s gonna need something to stand on. I\u2019ve been using the super jumper to get the job done. <\/p>\n

The set also included two Ant-Men. We have the basic figure which is my favorite part of the set. The suit looks great on the tampos and LEGO made a new and sharp looking helmet piece to get the minifigure just right. He looks great. Underneath the helmet, the LEGO head has two expressions: a basic Paul Rudd smile \u2013 I can see Rudd shaking his head yeah when I look at it and a confused\/disconcerted expression which I think is also pretty great for the character. The second Ant-Man is where the spoilers come in. We\u2019ve seen Blackout Ant-Man before, Funko has already done two of them and I highly doubt Hasbro & Hot Toys skip the repaint opportunity forever. But what is Blackout Ant-Man? Is he Paul Rudd in a different version of the costume? Is he a different, separate character? If so, who? Well, LEGO answers all that right on the box. They don’t call him Blackout Ant-Man, they just outright tell you who is in the suit. Now, the set does a great thing \u2013 it includes an all-black head piece with the minifigure to preserve the surprise, but they also include a regular head sculpt.<\/p>\n

This second head includes two expressions as well, a genuine smile and an angry yell. You can see them pictured here<\/a>, but I warn you \u2013 if you managed to avoid the name on the box and look at the face it will undoubtedly spoil part of the movie for you. Despite the spoiler, the Blackout figure looks excellent and I\u2019m looking forward to seeing it in the film. <\/p>\n

Finally, we did get a little diorama, set piece with the set. It\u2019s adorable. When I finished putting everything together, I had an extra red 1×1 brick and a yellow 2×1 plate and I couldn\u2019t figure out why \u2013 it\u2019s the \u201cnormal size\u201d piece for the diorama piece. Once you build everything up you get the same two pieces greatly upsized. It takes some stickers to finish off the look, but it\u2019s cool! Add-in a little fulcrum action and the piece can launch \u201cscrews\u201d to fire at the other minifigures. Pretty cool. <\/p>\n

Overall, this is a pretty great set at a great price. Had it been more than $20, I would\u2019ve really wanted the minifigs, but been more apt to shy away from purchasing the whole set. I love the enlarged LEGO piece though the ant may find its way to Sam\u2019s eventual LEGO stash. The minifigures are still the best part for me, though I could\u2019ve done without LEGO spoiling things (though maybe they didn\u2019t, I haven\u2019t seen the movie, and I do recall the LEGO Mandarin had a \u201cFinal Battle\u201d Tank and that didn\u2019t exactly happen in the movie\u2026)<\/p>\n
