<\/a>“Sorry I’m late, I was saving the world. You know how it is.”<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Ant-Man, Marvel’s Ant-Man. (Cause even the movie’s gotta make fun of itself…) <\/p>\n

My fascination with Ant-Man toys came about accidentally. I didn\u2019t realize how into I\u2019d get \u2013 until the Marvel Collector Corps Ant-Man box arrived. The box, whose contents I should probably go over at some point, was full of Ant-Man goodies. The two that jumped out at me right away where the Funko Mystery Minis. I\u2019ve got a few of the Minis, mostly from the Sci-Fi series. I was trying hard to get Rocketeer, and completely struck out, but I did get a lot of cool ones from classic movies like Alien, Predator, E.T., Tron, etc. They were a lot of fun and when I saw the Ant-Man box had two in them, they were the first thing I opened! <\/p>\n

The Ant-Man Mystery Minis set include four figures: Ant-Man, Yellow Jacket, Unmasked Ant-Man, & what is being called \u201cBlackout\u201d Ant-Man, though I\u2019m not sure the context or the story for that last one (though the LEGO set might spoil it). They\u2019re produced equally so no one is rarer than another, but the only way to get the Mystery Minis is via the Collector Corps Box (past boxes are still available for new subscriptions<\/a>) & through second hand outlets. For me, I received the basic Ant-Man & Unmasked Ant-Man in my subscription box and then picked up the other two on eBay from other subscribers. I\u2019m glad I did as I enjoy them even more as a set than I did individually. <\/p>\n

The one thing I wasn\u2019t prepared for was that these Mystery Minis have different styles than I\u2019m used to. I was expecting these to fit in with my existing Minis collection, but the comic minis are a little different than the movie ones. Like many Marvel Funko products, they have to be bobbleheads due to other licensing agreements. While I would\u2019ve liked my movie Ant-Man to fit in with my other movie minis, the advantage here is that fit in with the other Marvel minis, and of course, great together. The best advantage though, and I\u2019ll talk about this in the POP review, is that these have Funko POP Vinyl dimensions \u2013 meaning that both the Ant-Man & Yellow Jacket Mystery Minis can be paired with the Pops to showcase their size changing ability. There are two body sculpts between the four figures, one shared among the Ant-Men and one for Yellow Jacket. Both bodies are great caricatures of the real thing and surprisingly pack in the sculpted detail of the movie costumes. I favor the Ant-Man one more, I bought it three times, but the Yellow Jacket one is spiffy too. The two helmet sculpts are similarly spiffy and really increase my enjoyment of the figures. I don\u2019t know much about Blackout Ant-Man, but I really love that black helmet most out of the group. The unmasked head is probably my least favorite. It\u2019s a solid sculpt and I really like the sideways glance, but figures like Minimates & LEGO minifigures that somehow channel an actor\u2019s likeness with minimal detail have spoiled me. I don\u2019t see Paul Rudd there, but it\u2019s still obvious it is Paul Rudd regardless. <\/p>\n

There are no articulation on the minis, though the bobblehead can kinda let you pretend when you flick it. The paint work was sharp on all the figures which is great given all the detail. There is an excessive amount of grey on the basic & unmasked Ant-Man \u2013 I\u2019m guess they\u2019re maybe designed on an earlier draft of the costume? Either way, the grey actually still looks good, good enough that I didn\u2019t really think about or notice it right away. <\/p>\n

Overall, these are a great addition for me! I was a little disappointed that the Marvel Movie Minis aren\u2019t quite in the same style as other Movie Minis, but the POP compatibility makes me not give that a second thought. The suit design, which really grabs at me, looks great in this format with the oversized had. The ton of detail & sharp paint work round out some great little toys. My only real gripe is that my Collector Corps box couldn\u2019t bring me all four! <\/p>\n
