It doesn’t really matter. -“Rambo: First Blood Part II”.

As my son grows ever more aware of his surroundings, some members of our family have started to concern themselves with what he sees on the television. How what shows and movies my wife & I watch affect our little guy. Without wading knee deep into the debate, I find this amusing, particularly from my parents. If you grew up in the 80s you might know exactly what I mean – when I was little, we watched movies like Robocop, Predator, Rambo, & Terminator with no seeming cause or concern for my age (provided, of course, it was before “bed time”). And, perhaps more important than my parents choices, all of those R-Rated films had cartoons.

Rambo was the first though, his cartoon debuting in 1986, after First Blood Part II. I bring all this up, not because it has much to do with the toy (it doesn’t, this figure is based off the second film), but because my love of Rambo is really more about the cartoon, Rambo: The Force of Freedom. The cartoon was thematically different than the movies. No one died (its one similarity to the first film), it wasn’t overtly violent, and, even better, it had a tie-in toy line.

And I loved that toy line! Rambo got some cool allies & some… questionable stereotypical villains, and he got the coolest vehicle! The Defender 6×6 left in me a deep-seated loved of six-wheeled vehicles that extends to this day! And, of course, there was Rambo himself. One of my favorite toys from my youth was the basic Rambo from that line. He looked like he came straight out of First Blood Part II. Something this NECA figure has also done – though I do find myself wishing his bandana was cartoon red.

And that’s why, when NECA started their Rambo line, I patiently waited through the first two releases based on the first film. I knew this had to be coming and, the best part is, it was well worth the wait.

The first two Rambo figures were good, but this one seems to be even more improved. The new head sculpt is the best yet – it looks odd to me in a few angles, but I think part of it is that my perception of Sly has aged with him. This is him thirty years ago, when he was much younger. A quick glance of the movie poster pictured on the bubble and I’m reminded how great a sculpt it is. The rest of the body is good too. It’s generic though still specific to Rambo with the appropriate scars and Co’s Buddha pendant. Everything on the sculpt works great, even the silhouette of the figure against my computer screen is clearly Rambo. Continue to Page 2…

I was also lucky in the paintwork department. I’d read some horror stories about the eyes, but mine looks great. He is looking up to the left (similar to Dutch), but he’s not askew. The paint work and shading are well done throughout my figure. The line around the necklace is the weakest part and there are a few black smudges here and there, but they just add to the figure’s depth. There is one thing though- the type of plastic used. The skin tone looks good under most lighting (and in the pics), but it’s a little too translucent, moreso than Dutch. It helps the realism, but in some thinner areas, like the nose the translucent plastic switches around to being a hindrance.

Articulation is another highlight for the figure. Rambo has ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, & ankles, a swivel at the thigh as well as an ab crunch. Everything works really well, leaving Rambo capable of some great poses. I would like a little more in the arms. Bicep swivels would be great or at least a little more range at the wrists, but the figure can get into some iconic poses all the same.

Rambo included eight accessories, four of which are alternate hands. I’m not terribly certain we needed so many, some hold the knife, some the guns, and others just seem like they have similar grips. Maybe I’m just not looking at them closely enough to see their individual purposes and it is nice to have them. More important, though, is the gear. The trademark knife, the assault rifle, the bazooka, and a grenade that I’m bound to lose relatively soon. All the pieces are great sculpts. NECA does some of the best accessories. The knife fits in a sheath on the belt, so that’s become its permanent home. And while I love the overkill of the bazooka, my Rambo will be sporting the assault rifle during his tour on my shelf.

Overall, NECA did a great job with this, their third Rambo, offering. The main complaint is just the translucent nature of the plastic used for the skin. The few pictures were Rambo’s nose is lit up by nearby lighting is testament to that. It’s a nitpick to be sure though with the nice likeness and the articulation allowing for some great Rambo poses. The extra accessories are great for some added value and help complete the figure. The only thing I feel like I’m missing right now is a big six-wheeled jeep to put him in.

More NECA Reviews:

<img decoding="async" src="reviews/NECA/2014/trix00.png"

For all our Reviews, check out our
Review Index!

[1986,34,10
2459,128,2190,2460
One thing I’m always looking for with IAT is ways to help draw the toy blogging community a little closer together and this week I was reminded of a former great site that used to have this really cool feature: a weekly round-up of reviews.
