Thanos Series: Thanos Review"},"content":{"rendered":"

\"\"<\/a> “Beef him up! If you\u2019re going to steal one of the New Gods, at least rip off Darkseid, the really good one!”<\/em><\/strong> – Roy Thomas, on Thanos. <\/p>\n

Thanos has appeared in a lot of Marvel comics\u2026 and, to be honest, I have not read a lot of them. I still have a huge fondness for Thanos, for Starlin\u2019s work overall really (can I get a Hardcore Station shout out? No?). Starlin introduced Thanos in Iron Man #55 way back in 1973 and, yes, the Darkseid comparisons started pretty much instantly. Starlin has said, though, that it didn\u2019t start out that way. Check out this interview<\/a> for more of the story, but Starlin was originally channeling Metron when Roy Thomas uttered the infamous line above.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

Thanos didn\u2019t see much use in the 80s, when I learned to love comics, so I don\u2019t have the same huge affinity I do for him that I have for so many other Marvel characters. Thanos made his big come back in the 90s when the company got a little cosmic and then came back into prominence again recently as Marvel went a little cosmic again. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really reading Marvel at either time. I did follow Abnett & Lanning around during Annihilation (love those guys), but those boks featured a very different Thanos. <\/p>\n

In the comics, Thanos was from Titan, before being retconned into being the son of two Eternals (there\u2019s your Kirby influence coming back around, albeit directly this time), but is probably best characterized with his obsession for death \u2013 in this case, the personification of it, Mistress Death. He will kill pretty much anyone & everyone in order to please her. He\u2019s essentially the ultimate nihilist. I haven\u2019t read up on him lately; I think he\u2019s back from the dead again and back to being a pure villain (he has his anti-hero days too, which I tend to prefer). <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

Thanos is also, of course, coming back in a big way thanks to his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! We really haven\u2019t gotten a ton of characterization on that version of him just yet, though that will change as we get closer and closer to 2018. Interestingly, even though the Thanos Wave includes three figures from the MCU, Age of Ultron specifically, the Thanos Build-A-Figure is from the comics. Though it probably wasn\u2019t the look many long-time ML collectors were expecting. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

See, if you\u2019ve been collecting Marvel Legends for, I don\u2019t know… the last thirteen years, or even just the last decade since the BAF was introduced, you would\u2019ve thought that Thanos would be pretty high on the “get this guy done” list. Well, you would’ve been mistaken. Now, we did get a pretty sweet Marvel Select Thanos \u2013 it\u2019s got some paint issues and limited articulation, but it looks great and at least tries hard at the previous things. But he\u2019s been it. This whole time. MU has, I think, three Thanos figures already. ML? First one, right here. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

And it\u2019s the new costume. Now, I\u2019m not a stickler \u2013 the new costume does look good, it echoes the original. I love the dark blue and gold color scheme. It\u2019s a great looking figure, but I still kinda want a classic one? I do have that MS one, so I’m feeling a bit tormented. I don\u2019t need both of these guys. But which one to keep? This Thanos has a lot going for it. First, the sculpt is great. The new costume has a lot of fun little details and they\u2019re well captured here. I especially like the armored plates down his spine on the back of the figure. I did end up with problem on his right leg \u2013 the boot cuff is glued on upside down, so I\u2019m going to have to fix that. But I like the overall modern suit just fine. <\/p>\n

The paint is kinda on par with the old Marvel Select figure. I like that one, but it seemed almost impossible to find one that didn\u2019t have smears and smudges in the gold paint. With this Thanos, it was kinda the same problem. Most notably on the head sculpts. Ultimately, I wanted a good Hellcat & a good Spider-Woman. With Thanos being a figure I might sell, that meant I was willing to take a not so perfect head. And, man, I really did. The one in the pictures is the better of the two, but that left eye is a little droopy. Still, he had the best teeth and the best gold on his mask, even if it isn’t as great as I would like. Still, having had the smudged MS for so long, I\u2019m used to accepting less than perfect paint on my Thanos figures. Thani? <\/p>\n

And articulation is about the same too. This Thanos should be better articulated. He\u2019s got ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, wrists, and ankles; swivels at the biceps, waist, thighs, & boots, hinges at the elbows, double hinges at the knees, and the ab crunch. The costume details seriously get in the way though. <\/p>\n

The skirt does block the hips something fierce. The sculpted butt and perhaps the bulks of the hips are also contributing factors, but it\u2019s amazing how little movement you can get out of those hips. Which of course impede the entire leg. The arms also suffer from the single-hinge elbow not being able to deal with the bulk. The forearm guards interfere with the ball-wrists and while the large collar\/chest armor doesn’t block the shoulders, it is only because it pops off instead. That’s not really less annoying. You can get good poses out of him, but compared to some of Hasbro\u2019s recent releases, it\u2019s underwhelming. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

Thanos was the BAF for this wave (Avengers Wave 2), so he included no accessories. Not even a gauntlet… <\/p>\n

Overall, the jury is still out for me on this one. Much like the previous MS version, the visual is the main appeal here. He looks great. The paint work could be a little better and that QC on the boot do bug me a bit, but I like the overall figure. It would be easier if one of the two had really standout articulation, so I guess it just comes down to wanting a massive, cool-but-out-of-scale classic Thanos or this more in-scale modern version. I\u2019ll have to give it some time because I’m not really sure. Heck, it might even come down to the fact that I could sell this one for a lot more than the old MS. It’s that up in the air. <\/p>\n
