It feels like I\u2019ve been waiting forever for NECA\u2019s third wave of Pacific Rim figures.\u00a0 Wave\u2019s one and two had issues, to say the least.\u00a0 The cost limit imposed on those waves set severe restrictions on size, articulation, and paint apps.\u00a0 But wave three would bring a rebirth of sorts.\u00a0 The line would continue with a higher price point and a hopeful resolution to the problems of the first two waves.<\/p>\n

\"chal01\"<\/p>\n

While I chose Cherno Alpha for today\u2019s review, I\u2019 wanted to take a little sidebar to talk about this wave as a whole because they\u2019re starting to hit online stores and sell out rather quickly.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want anyone to miss out because they were waiting on a specific review.\u00a0 So while there are a few little issues here and there, these four figures are everything NECA said they would be.\u00a0 Articulation, paint apps, and size have all been improved.\u00a0 These are the figures the fans have been waiting for, and if you have the chance to grab the one you want at retail, then don\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n

Sculpt has never been an issue with this line, and Cherno Alpha is a perfect example as to why I\u2019ve stuck with it.\u00a0 Cherno was one of the first Jaegers created to fight the kaiju.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t have the sleek armor of the newer bots, or those hidden weapons that pop out and save the day.\u00a0 He\u2019s just a bulky and brutal fighter that physically smashes his opponents into submission.<\/p>\n

\"chal03\"<\/p>\n

Cherno\u2019s chunky rectangular arms and legs make him look like a robot from a 50\u2019s sci-fi pulp, while the majority of his body is comprised of a huge reactor tower on top of an armored torso.\u00a0 This Jaeger may be Russian designed, but he really reminds me of an old wind-up robot toy from Japan.<\/p>\n

\"chal04\"<\/p>\n

Even past his overall design, Cherno is full of tiny sculpted details that were too small to even notice in the movie.\u00a0 The top of his tower hat is covered in little vent panels and even a couple of exhaust fans.\u00a0 While the front of the figure displays the cockpit and plates that could open and close in the movie, his back is even more detailed with a motorized looking spine and various large plugs.\u00a0 Even his waist has these tiny wires connecting the upper and lower halves.<\/p>\n

\"chal05\"<\/p>\n

Most of Cherno\u2019s body has been molded in a dark green paint with a bit of a metallic glittery sheen to it.\u00a0 There\u2019s also a dark gray around the fingers and various joints that aren\u2019t covered in armor.\u00a0 Both green and gray are covered in a dirty wash, giving the figure a worn and battered look.\u00a0 He also has a nice amount of tampoed panel lines and Russian decals and stars.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

All this action figure goodness is topped off by an amazing amount of articulation.\u00a0 Cherno\u2019s shoulders, waist and ankles are all double ball joints.\u00a0 His hips are swivel hinges, while his elbows, knees, and fingers are hinged.\u00a0 What\u2019s really interesting is that the reactor tower seems to be connected to the torso with a ball joint too.\u00a0 It barely moves, and it was probably done for sculpting reasons, but I find it really odd that this bit of his body is articulated.<\/p>\n

\"chal07\"<\/p>\n

All those joints to take on a ton of great poses and help him move like an actual street brawler, but NECA took it a step further and added a sort of \u201caction feature\u201d.\u00a0 His forearms can slide forward, allowing him to pull off his hydraulic enforced punches.<\/p>\n

\"chal08\"<\/p>\n

Even though Cherno is pretty amazing, there are still some quality control issues that seem to be popping up.\u00a0 There\u2019s some talk online that some people are missing the back of the heel on their figures.\u00a0 My particular figure doesn\u2019t have that problem, but it does have two right shins.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a huge issue, but he does stand a bit crooked.\u00a0 The figure seems to sell out quick, so replacing him will highly depend on finding a non-defective one.<\/p>\n

\"chal09\"<\/p>\n

Aside from a couple of quality control issues, this figure is pretty amazing.\u00a0 The articulation alone puts him leagues above the previous Jaeger figures.\u00a0 But beyond that he also has a larger size and more complex engineering that\u2019s set a new standard for these figures.\u00a0 We\u2019re already getting an updated Gipsy Danger, so I can only assume we\u2019ll be seeing 2.0 versions of all the Jaegers as long as they keep selling well.<\/p>\n
