<\/a>I always think it\u2019s funny when I get an e-mail or a PM asking if I\u2019m still collecting or going to be reviewing MOTU Classics. MOTU is such a huge part of IAT, that I can\u2019t imagine IAT without He-Man being a part of it (even if we\u2019ve only reviewed one MOTU figure in two months! Our bad!). Now, it is true that I haven\u2019t been reviewing the MOTUCs of late. I\u2019ve been letting Vault have a bite of the apple. I think the last figure I reviewed was either Nepthu or Batros back in September, but I am still happy to be picking up the line and looking forward to a lot of the upcoming product! <\/p>\n

To that point, I\u2019m jumping back in today with a MOTUC review of a particularly fun release: Modulok! (Yes, I know, we\u2019ve skipped a few! We\u2019ll get \u2018em, don\u2019t worry!) I never had Modulok as a kid \u2013 in fact, I don\u2019t think I had all that many of the Horde at all. I was always a fan of Skeletor and his evil army first & foremost. Ironically, though, Modulok appeared in the Filmation cartoon as more a rogue agent. He had only one head (though the second appeared as a robotic head intended to house MAA\u2019s consciousness) and sought favor with Skeletor before transferring over to the POP cartoon and joining up with the Horde. Either way, I just don\u2019t imagine my parents or I ran across Modulok back in the day. He was too cool to pass up. <\/p>\n

Just look at where we are right now. We\u2019re seeing Modulok\u2019s action feature hit the big time. The indie world is still afire over Glyos and the Glyos system. Hasbro has taken notice and started with the Assemblers line for IM3 and the larger, better overall, Mashers line that will extend to at least Marvel & Transformers. Rearranging your figures parts has never been a bigger deal, but Modulok had all that down nearly thirty years ago. He wasn\u2019t the first, of course, but he was a big deal all the same. <\/p>\n

As a big fan of this time of built-in customization, you can surely guess that I loved Modulok. Once I got him out of the package (glued shut, Mattel? I thought we were trying to not waste money?) I quickly got to assembling him from his packaged bipedal form to a monster using all the pieces! Well, all but one. This guy has got two butts and you\u2019re just going to have to let one sit out or use at a club. Your call. <\/p>\n

It was awesome. All the connection points are ball & socket (the shoulders & hips are also hinged) so we\u2019ve got a fantastic range or movement on this guy. Everything snaps together pretty cleanly and I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m going to break him which was something I was really worried about going in. The only downside is that a lot of the connections are made from a particularly soft plastic and I\u2019m worried if they\u2019re going to get chalky in a few years. I\u2019ve been \u201closing\u201d JLU figures to that white dust left and right lately. Fingers crossed on that.<\/p>\n

Sculptwise, Modulok is pretty masterful. The unique pieces look unique thanks to sharp updates to the old designs and added textures throughout help bring the sculpt to life. The only problem sculptwise is that considerations weren\u2019t always made to accommodate the \u201cplug n\u2019 play\u201d, part-swapping feature. This most noticeable on the hips where the Mattel team had to widen the piece to make things work. I wouldn\u2019t mind it, but the widening isn\u2019t even on both sides (duh) and it\u2019s smooth & featureless, which really calls attention to it. I think he looks worst in bipedal forms, but it does blend out a little if you add everything on to the figure. Either way, I wish the crotch had been built up a little more to make the whole area more aesthetic than just functional. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition to the eighteen ball & socket ports, Modulok also features four ball-jointed shoulders, four bicep swivels, four wrist swivels, ab crunch, a waist swivel, six ball-jointed hips, six thigh swivels, six ball-jointed knees, and six hinged ankles. Whew! You get all that? The ball-jointed knees were probably the nicest surprise. I loved that (Though I still secretly wish Mattel could\u2019ve upped their game here and gone for all the joints to include the interchangeable system. It\u2019d be fun to swap feet & hands too.). <\/p>\n

The paintwork on Modulok was pretty sharp. I had no issues despite the massive number of paint apps. The only issue I had is the paint on the ball-joints. It gets everywhere! Seriously, I had to sweep out the photo booth and my desk after playing with him. I figure the amount of paint that\u2019s going to flake off will eventually stop, but right now it\u2019s pretty heavy. <\/p>\n

Modulok includes one accessory that\u2019s not himself: a rifle that splits into two pieces. Just to show how little attention I paid to the vintage Modulok, I didn\u2019t know his two pistols could form a rifle (they\u2019re packed individually in the tray) so Mantenna is making the same face I made on when I figure it out. Pretty cool. It\u2019s a great piece, but again, a little soft for my tastes. <\/p>\n

Overall, Modulok could have a few improvements, like the engineering on the hips being handled more carefully or the sculpt taking the need for that engineering into account, but the final product is particularly satisfactory. Maybe I\u2019ve just gone too long without buying LEGOs (I won\u2019t let myself, that stuff\u2019s addictive!), but I love being able to build with my toys \u2013 and getting to have fun with a 6\u201d figure like that is rare. I mean, I get to have fun with all my toys \u2013 we call those \u201creviews\u201d \u2013 but there is something even more fun about part swapping. It brings me back to my misspent Xevoz \u201cyouth\u201d. And the fact it\u2019s a He-Man figure is all the sweeter. The only that\u2019s going to make this better is Multi-Bot\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \t
