My brother had a baby this weekend (Yay!), so we’ve been enjoying his newfound Dadness, I’m working out this Uncle thing, and my wife is quick to point out that it’s my little brother, seven years my junior, that now has kids. I think she’s trying to get at something…

There are a few other things going that might also cause my schedule to become as seemingly hectic as Vault’s, but hopefully we’ll keep our Daily Update Train going as we get ever closer to Toy Fair! I’m actually excited for Toy Fair this year, but I can’t figure out why for the life of me – what do I even buy at retail anymore? It’s all Matty subs and BBTS pre-orders these days. Well, there is one line that I’m still snagging when I’m lucky enough to run across it – you might have even guessed what it is by the subject of this review.

I will admit that I’m tempted to purchase whole Marvel Legends waves online. I did that with Rocket Raccoon, which proved the smart thing to do because I’ve never seen a single figure from that wave in person. The downside is that Hawkeye & Scarlet Spider are still sitting here, unopened, waiting for me to get industrious enough to sell them off. It would be the same story with Hasbro’s newest waves released to coincide with Amazing Spider-Man 2 & Captain America: The Winter Soldier (albeit way too early!). I may yet build Cap’s Mandroid, but the Spidey BAF Ultimate Green Goblin is about as interesting as a New52 Collect & Connect. It’s a shame as he looks to be a solid figure, but I just don’t feel a pull. Not enough to buy 2-3 figures I don’t want anyway.

So, I’ve been good; making my frequent brick & mortar stops. I missed twice: a travelling collector cleaned out my TRU and I was just a little too late at Target a few weeks ago. But I scored big last weekend. I had the whole wave in front of me, I waffled on Beetle – he looks like a 90s figure threw up everywhere, which is totally awesome, but I stuck to my “budget” choices, Black Cat & Carnage.

I kinda love Carnage, but I really couldn’t tell you why. While I consumed Spider-Man comics as a kid in the 80s (BlackCostume4Life!), I didn’t really read any in the 90s when Carnage debuted. What I know about him is largely informed by the old 90s Spidey cartoon, right down to the unnecessary use of Baron Mordo to give Cletus Kasidy the symbiote instead of getting into the whole spawning thing. As such, I don’t even always think about Carnage being a serial killer (he never killed anyone directly in the cartoon). Maybe I just like the look, or the idea or Carnage, I’m not sure. I bought Carnage toys several times over in the 5” lines and I think I picked him up as an ML (or Spider-Man Classics anyway) twice, but I settled on the Fearsome Foes version (still one of the best ML Box sets ever).

And that version has sufficed for years. I was never completely in love with the figure, but I’ve been happy. My Collection was: Carnage? Check!

But I’m getting old. See, it makes sense to me when a toy company updates Super Powers 25 years later or there’s a 30th Anniversary Transformer. I get that. I’m no spring chicken. But, now I’m getting old enough that figures I bought as an adult collector are coming back around and getting irresistible updates. That old Carnage is still great – it’s a unique Carnage sculpt for one thing, but the joints are kinda ugly, it’s a little gangly, and the head sculpt looks like he’s more gums than teeth. I still enjoy it though. And I can’t believe I probably bought it over a decade ago. Continue to Page 2…

So new Carnage was calling to me and I did answer. There’s a lot to love. Yes, the unique sculpt is gone, that’s been over for awhile anyway, but the figure has enough smart engineering to make the figure work. New forearms & calves with spots for the softer tendrils to attach to create a somewhat more comic-like look. Once again, I’m not totally in love with the head – this guy sorta always looks like he’s going “LOL. What?”, but I’m getting used to it. Those areas combined with the new hands and the tendril-attachment for his back make for a sharp looking figure though. It’s not quite the Carnage I remember, well, maybe if the artist was a little lazier when they were penciling him in.

With a buck, the paint work becomes that much more important and I think the figure does well in this area too. The paint mask looks organic & veiny. It doesn’t quite capture the look of the original, but it looks sharp and blends great with the tendril attachments. There is a little slop in key areas where the whites of the eye don’t quite matchup, but the “sloppy” look of Carnage can cover for the less than accurate paint somewhat. Overall, it comes together well enough that I don’t really even mind the reuse, at least until I get him besides the Classics figure. And what I’m feeling then might be more about how times have changed rather than anything negative for the new guy.

In addition to the articulation being much better integrated into the aesthetics of the sculpt, there’s a ton of articulation to love. Ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, wrists, hips, and inverted ankles, swivel cuts at the biceps, waist, thighs, & calves, double-jointed elbows & knees, and the standard ab crunch. Everything works pretty great, but I did have an odd QC issue on the hips. The hips & the ball-joints inside are a snug fit, but the figure still teeters after posing. See, the legs are loose, but they’re loose together, so I’m thinking that the two hip connecters are on a barbell not actually attached to the figure; just threading through a hole in the lower torso. I’m hoping this is just a one-off thing Hasbro is trying. It seems more like an 80s solution and it doesn’t quite work.

Carnage included no accessories for himself (no, I don’t count the tendril “backpack”), but he does come with two BAF pieces for the Ultimate Green Goblin that I’m relatively sure I’m not building (waffling, already…): the head and flames that rest on the figure shoulders & back. The pieces are nice and, again, GG looks solid, but I just don’t imagine I’ll end up with everything from this wave. If I don’t, I’ve got this fun sheet of fire accessory I guess!

Overall, this is a very similar situation to the one I had with Venom. I love my old Sinister Six ML Venom (another awesome Spider-Man box set!), but that new MS Venom was amazing. This new ML Carnage is not quite that jaw-dropping, but I do enjoy him. He’s an improvement over an older figure, but one I particularly seem to cherish. It’s my collection. I can go haul out of all of my Carnages if I wanted to, but space is at a premium. Do I really need two each of Venom & Carnage on display? That seems silly, but I think that’s what is going to happen for the foreseeable future. I love the older figures, but these new ones are just too good.

For all our Marvel Reviews, check out our Review Index.

[169,122,34,10
1595,2240,24,2212,2575,2241,588,2075
Absorbing Man Week!
