Surprise NECA week!\u00a0 Funny thing is, I was actually going to review that fantastic Kenner Lava Predator today. \u00a0But as I was checking my local Toys R US last night, I happened across a fresh case of Alien figures.\u00a0 So I took this nice coincidence and bumped poor Lava back a bit for a review of Big Chap, the first Alien.<\/p>\n

\"axbc1\"<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t had a lot of luck with NECA\u2019s aliens so far.\u00a0 I never saw the brown one in stores. \u00a0I did see his Marine buds though.\u00a0 The Genocide two-pack wasn\u2019t as difficult to track down.\u00a0 Unfortunately my red xeno\u2019s leg broke straight out of package, and there weren\u2019t any left to exchange.\u00a0 So Chap here is actually my first, and I have to say I\u2019m pretty happy with him.<\/p>\n

\"axbc2\"<\/p>\n

When it comes to sculpt, chap is a mix of new and old parts.\u00a0 What stands out right away is the classic xenomorph head from the first movie.\u00a0 While similar in shape, it\u2019s a little less detailed with fewer ribbed cables running along the side.\u00a0 Then there\u2019s the fantastic translucent dome with a visible sculpted skull underneath.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always loved this creepy human influence on the monster, and the figure reproduces it really well.<\/p>\n

Next up are the hands and feet.\u00a0 Instead of three long fingers, the original Alien had six shorter ones, with the four middle digits grouped together in twos.\u00a0 His feet were also a lot less animal claw-like and more like a human\u2019s.\u00a0 His forearms are also new, just being one long bone instead of having that side piece jutting out.<\/p>\n

Even though he looks a bit plain, chap has a pretty detailed paint job.\u00a0 The skull under the dome has been given a light gray color with black over the sculpted textures.\u00a0 The rest of the figure has been molded black with a dark gray layer covering almost all the raised surfaces of the sculpt.\u00a0 This adds a ton of depth and allows those deep recesses to shine along with the sculpted exoskeleton.\u00a0 Chap\u2019s also got some silver detailing on his claws and teeth, and the whole figure has been given a glossy coat to make him look a bit slimy.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

Articulation is pretty much the same as the previous aliens.\u00a0 Head, waist, and ankles are all ball joints.\u00a0 His jaw is hinged, and the little mouth can slide in and out.\u00a0 Shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hips are swivel\/hinges.\u00a0 He\u2019s got swivel cuts on his biceps and thighs.\u00a0 His knees are double hinged, and he has a single hinge for toe joints.\u00a0 His tail is also on a bendy wire and can pretty much take any pose you need.<\/p>\n

\"axbc6\"<\/p>\n

No real accessories here.\u00a0 That spike just behind his head does pop off to allow for more range of movement though.\u00a0 Since NECA\u2019s been testing out the Kenner waters lately, I wouldn\u2019t mind them taking a cue from the old figures and including a Facehugger with each figure.\u00a0 But maybe that\u2019s something they\u2019re saving for the first wave of those inspired figures.<\/p>\n

\"axbc7\"<\/p>\n

All around Big Chap is a pretty good figure.\u00a0 There are just enough new pieces to make him feel like a different creature than the previous Xenos, but he can also still fit in with the rest of the hive pretty well.\u00a0 He\u2019s also a great figure to start out with as we wait for the rest of the Nostromo crew to show up.\u00a0 He can torment them one by one as they join him on the shelf.<\/p>\n
