Joe more. I think that still may be true, but you can’t tell from the way my current collection is setup. It’s not even close. MOTUC dominates my shelves and not just because the Joes take up less space. My Joe Collecting & MOTU Collecting come into focus here because you basically have to collect both lines the same way right now, via subscription.

The thing is though I sign up for MOTUC every year with little issue. I already know I’m buying into 2015 and wondering just what Mattel will have going on in 2016. But, even though I claim to love G.I. Joe more, I’m constantly thinking that I shouldn’t be spending money on the Joe Subscription. It’s frustrating.

I’m not quite sure why I feel that way about the Joe FSS, but I know it’s true. Look at it this way, I have every MOTUC figure except for the first King Grayskull. I’ve never sold a single one & most are out on display. Thirteen figures came in the GI Joe Subscription this year. I’ve already sold seven of them. Doh. I mean, I think the Nano-B.A.T. is a cooler toy than Sir Laser Lot to be sure, but somehow that ol’ blue armored dude is still here and the clear neon green android is gone. Every MOTUC I have, save two, has been reviewed here, but this is only the second FSS Joe to be featured. I’m clearly wrong in the head.

Further, the Joes I kept have not been consistent. I have a soft spot for Dice, so he stayed. I kept TNT to go with the “Argentina” Joes I got at JoeCon a few years back. I kept Iron Klaw… uh, because I love his era being represented? Topside just screamed cool (no, really). Wrong-Hair Covergirl had been a huge hole in my collection. And then there was Big Boa. I’ve always favored Joes over Cobra, so Big Boa was more on the bubble than one might expect. I had trouble parting with him. I was hesitant to sell, but I also didn’t open him just in case.

Then, sometime last week, after most of the other Sub Joes had gone on to new homes, I decided I had to keep him. I’d been offered $100 for him. That’s a lot for such a little guy, but I came to the conclusion I would regret. I finally opened him last night for the review and… I’m so glad I did.

The thing about Big Boa that I didn’t realize until I got him out of the package (and really, not until I got his gloves on, silly as that sounds) is that Big Boa is basically the star of the first year of subscription figures. Covergirl was fan-demanded sure, but her hair is off-model from the figure we all probably wanted. Many of the others are fun or good figures, but are limited in some ways by necessary part reuse or a decision or two that could’ve been made differently. Big Boa is not.

It’s really nothing short of amazing that the Collector’s Club was able to create this Big Boa so faithfully and well executed with a mix of reused parts and some new gear. Not even Hasbro was able to do that with their retail line. I have some favorite characters that have… kinda junky figures.

But the Club got it right with Big Boa. The larger scale body used (YoJoe lists it as originally belonging to the “Night Adder” figure from 2009) is nearly perfect. I mean, a few things are off. The boots, the two straps on the legs, the lack of ribbing on the crotch. But those are squabbles at best. This is a buck figure of a big guy wearing only pants. That sums up most of Big Boa right there.

The Club then went about tooling the pieces they would need. The harness & belt are sharp. They bunch up a bit in some poses and can ride high, but a little bit of adjusting after the post and all is well. The head sculpt is probably the highlight of the base figure. It looks fantastic and tops the figure nicely. It is slightly modified from the original, but every small change looks for the better on the new version. I love it. Continue to Page 2…

The paintwork could be a little better. I’m always a little hesitant to make this scale down as it’s likely more difficult to paint than my preferred bigger scale, but it’s acceptable in most places. I think the main place I wish it were tightened up is the red on the helmet. The right is sharp, but the left side could use some help.

Since the figure is made up from movie figure parts, the articulation is thankfully closer to the modern figures than the early 25th Anniversary stuff. The neck has a good ball-joint as do the shoulders, elbows, hips, & ankles. Double-hinged knees, wrist swivels, and ab crunch finish off the figure. I still could use some swivel cuts throughout the figure, but there are plenty of great boxing poses for Big Boa to get into.

While Big Boa doesn’t have his classic punching bag accessory, Fun Pub did a great magic trick for the accessories they were able to include: a jousting stick, a dumbbell, a sledgehammer, the training mask, and boxing gloves. Most of the accessories are technically new. Hasbro had a cancelled “training” Duke lined up after the release of the Rise of Cobra, but it didn’t reach stores. The accessories must have been tooled though, as Fun Pub jumped in and snagged most of the gear for Big Boa (all but the gloves and sledgehammer). It fits wonderfully with Boa’s trainer status – though I’m not sure what he does with the sledgehammer and they’re just some fun accessories to boot. The dumbbell alone appeals to me. Great accessory.

Big Boa was really the shot in the arm my Joe collecting needed. I may have not had much need for the Valor vs Venom Jinx or Black Out & Barrel Roll, but Big Boa really rekindled my interest in Joes. He’s wonderfully done – so much so that I wish all the modern Joe updates were done as well as him. And I guess that’s why I keep subbing. I may not keep all the figures (FSS 2.0 Skull Buster is already gone), but subscribing is still the best and maybe cheapest way to ensure I get more figures like Big Boa. I’m not sure who the star of 2.0 will be. I’m enjoying Widescope so far even though I’m not familiar with him. Keel-Haul & Cesspool are the ones I’m looking forward too. I don’t know for sure, but I hope someone gives Big Boa a run for his money as the best FSS figure.

Also, I really need to trim down that MOTUC collection…

More G.I.
