Poor Clamp Champ, rounding out the end of a toy line seems to be his fate in life.\u00a0 Not that the Classics line is over just yet, but Scott seems to be preparing us for the inevitable with nearly all his posts lately.\u00a0 At least Clampy made it out before it was too late, and he\u2019s a pretty good figure.\u00a0 Unfortunately there are a few annoying issues that keep him from being great.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with the sculpt.\u00a0 Clamp Champ\u2019s body takes us back to the standard He-Man buck with no real frills, just like the vintage figure all the way down to the boots, bracers, and loincloth.\u00a0 But the Horsemen did pull out a little 200X flare with his armor.\u00a0 Instead of a straight repaint of Fisto\u2019s chest plate, the 4H took that same basic design and gave it a little techno twist with some circuitry.\u00a0 They also sculpted a \u201cClassicized\u201d version of his Staction\u2019s backpack onto the back of the armor, which is also a very nice touch.<\/p>\n

Even though I love all these details, Clampy\u2019s armor is also the source of my biggest disappointment.\u00a0 The armor was sculpted too short.\u00a0 If the figure stands up straight, a large gap exposes the figure\u2019s midriff.\u00a0 To cover it up, the figure has to hunch forward unnaturally.\u00a0 I know this may seem like a small quibble, but it really bothers me that a technologically advanced man like Clamp Champ, who serves the king of Eternia, can\u2019t find a shirt that fits properly.<\/p>\n

Clamp Champ\u2019s head sculpt has got to be one of the more expressive human faces in the entire line.\u00a0 Similar to the original He-Man face, Champ\u2019s appearance seems to change depending on the angle you\u2019re seeing it from.\u00a0 I really love these subtle differences in his look, and I wish more figures could pull that off.<\/p>\n

\"clmp4\"<\/p>\n

Being made of a He-Man buck, Clamp Champ\u2019s paint job is pretty simple.\u00a0 Most of the figure has been molded in dark flesh, with his boots and crotch done in black.\u00a0 These darker colors really make the red and silver highlights stand out nicely.\u00a0 The metallic blue and teal of his armor also looks really great on the figure, even if it doesn\u2019t match anything else.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

Clampy comes with two accessories.\u00a0 The smaller of the two is a little clamp-like weapon that was inspired by his 200X Staction.\u00a0 This little silver clamp can be held in the center, but unfortunately it doesn\u2019t have any articulation.<\/p>\n

\"clmp6\"<\/p>\n

His second accessory is his primary weapon, and my second complaint about the figure.\u00a0 The large mechanical device seems to have taken almost all of its inspiration from the vintage version.\u00a0 There were definitely some more sculpted details added, which I like, but the \u201cclamp\u201d part of the device is really a giant pair of pincers.\u00a0 Pincers cut and tear, clamps grip and secure.\u00a0 There\u2019s a difference, and it\u2019s always bothered me that the original Clamp Champ\u2019s weapon didn\u2019t match his name.\u00a0 Now the mistake has been repeated for the ultimate MOTU line.\u00a0 It\u2019s frustrating to say the least.<\/p>\n

\"clmp7\"<\/p>\n

So I\u2019ve got a lot of mixed feelings about this Clamp Champ figure.\u00a0 On one hand, I think the figure\u2019s design and head sculpt look fantastic.\u00a0 He easily stands out on the shelf.\u00a0 Unfortunately he sometimes stands out for the wrong reasons, like the giant weapon he wields that has nothing to do with his name, and what I assume is his specialty.\u00a0 At least I can chalk the giant pincers up to vintage love, there\u2019s really no excuse for him not to have a full sized shirt though.<\/p>\n
