Earths Freddy Freeman Review"},"content":{"rendered":"

<\/a>This review will be quick as I\u2019m just filling in for Vault here at the last minute. Luckily, this is a figure that there\u2019s really not too much to say about: Captain Marvel, Jr. <\/p>\n

First of all, Captain Marvel, Jr. is packaged & sold as Freddy Freeman because a certain comic company made much more famous use of the word Marvel twenty years after Freddy was created. Doh. It\u2019s a great irony though as Captain Marvel, Jr. can\u2019t even say his own name anyway. <\/p>\n

As any lay-comic fan could likely deduce, Freddy is Captain Marvel\u2019s sidekick, but unlike Mary Marvel who received her powers from Shazam, Freddy was granted his powers from Captain Marvel directly., That means his magic words are: Captain Marvel. Kinda hard to get a brand going when you can\u2019t say your own name!<\/p>\n

Back in the day, when it snowed uphill to school both ways and DC Comics published stories I wanted to read, the Marvel Family was one of my favorite corners to explore. They have a rich pre-DC back story from the Fawcett Comics days. The 90s also saw an amazing Power of Shazam run. Sadly, recent years saw the family falling on hard times via poor writing, Mary Marvel in particular. I drifted away from them and haven\u2019t really looked back. I haven\u2019t bothered to follow along with the nu52 Shazam at all. <\/p>\n

Despite our falling out, I did still need to have the primary members of the Marvel Family in my DC Classics collection. And I\u2019m not alone. Captain Marvel, Jr. is a pretty big character to cross off the list this month and I\u2019d be surprised if Mattel didn\u2019t purposely schedule him to arrive right during subscription sign-ups. It\u2019s what I would do. <\/p>\n

There is just one tiny problem though. And it\u2019s something Mattel can\u2019t really fix. While Captain Marvel, Jr. is likely to be one of the more demanded characters to be put in the subscription this year, he\u2019s still just Freddy Freeman. <\/p>\n

He hasn\u2019t had his own title since DC sued Fawcett sixty years ago. In his years at DC, he\u2019s done a few cool things, been a Titan & an Outsider, got an even dumber name for a bit (CM3 \u2013 and this was before hashtags), but he\u2019s not really had a chance to stand out. And in that regard he kinda amounts to much needed shelf filler. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s kinda where I\u2019m at with him. I wanted this figure! I have this figure! It shipped to my house with no hassle! I was just going about my business one Tuesday last month and *boom* I have a CM3 figure. That should be awesome. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

More so because Mattel did do a decent job on him. The figure looks deceptively simple, but Mattel added plenty of new parts to get his details right: new forearms, new lowers legs and feet for the boots, the belt, and the cape are all-new and all spot-on. Yes, the head sculpt could be better. I feel bad being nitpicky about head sculpts. <\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what Freddy \u201clooks like\u201d really (I think it looks like someone though, but I can\u2019t figure out who, and that\u2019s throwing me off), so this head sculpt does get a pass, but just barely. The head overall might be a little small, I can’t quite decide, but it is definitely a little lopsided. The hair is definitely longer on his right than left and the face might just be too. I\u2019d need to do that mirror trick in Photoshop that I did for Manhattan to be sure. The head itself is kinda the important piece here too, so that may be part of why the figure is just\u2026 here and not \u201cWow!\u201d. <\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think it\u2019s just that though. I don\u2019t envy Mattel these days. I don\u2019t know how to make a Captain Marvel, Jr. figure get the \u201cit\u201d factor it sorely needed to jump out at me in a collection of over two hundred figures. Mattel could do a better job sure. The head sculpt could be better. The paint could be flawless. Some might say that Mattel should spend more in production \u2013 alternate hands, lightning effects \u2013 but I tell that stuff would just end up in a box for most collectors at this point. I\u2019m not sure what I want out of this figure. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m subscribing again this year, no doubt, but I start to wonder a bit when a figure I was sure my collection needed just doesn\u2019t \u201cpop\u201d for me like I expected it to. I\u2019m still happy to have him, but I\u2019d sure like to know what it would take to make me happy to get him. <\/p>\n
