Dorothy, I\u2019m thrilled to be getting Big O figures eight years after the show premiered.\u00a0 Now that Roger Smith is on my shelf I can breathe a sigh of relief that at least the two most important characters on the show were made.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Like the Heavy Arms version of Aegis, Roger Smith was a Wonder Fest 2011 summer exclusive.\u00a0 Some were produced early and sold at the show, but the majority of them were sold online after the convention and made to order after the fact.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of fun having toys pop up randomly in your mailbox long after you\u2019ve paid for them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15992\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs1.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs1.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Again, I\u2019m going to have to thank Max Factory for doing this.\u00a0 High middleman fees can sometimes be the deciding factor on if a person can afford a figure, and this was a great way to skip that hassle entirely.\u00a0 I hope they continue the online exclusive program long into the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15993\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roger Smith is the main character in The Big O.\u00a0 He\u2019s basically Bruce Wayne, without the need to dress up like a bat and stalk the night.\u00a0 Instead, Roger solves most of his problems with the giant robot named Big O and a battle against whatever forces stand ready to destroy Paradigm City.\u00a0 It\u2019s a pretty simple concept on the surface, but like Evangelion, there\u2019s plenty of symbolism, deep running metaphors, and philosophical questions that bring up new ideas with each viewing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs06.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15997\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs06.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs06.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs06.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The show\u2019s art direction was heavily influenced by Batman: The Animated Series, which is another thing I really liked about the show.\u00a0 It gave the characters a unique look among all the other anime at the time.\u00a0 Unfortunately the style doesn\u2019t always translate well into 3D.\u00a0 Roger looks fantastic from certain positions and super awkward or deformed in others.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s mostly because of how angular his body is.\u00a0 Dorothy doesn\u2019t seem to have this problem since most of her surfaces are round.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs04.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15995\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs04.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs04.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs04.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs04.jpg?resize=400%2C300&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aside from the angles issue, Roger\u2019s sculpt is very simple and spot-on.\u00a0 His tie and collar are a separate piece and tuck nicely into his bulky suit jacket.\u00a0 But like Dorothy\u2019s dress, his jacket is made of a very soft and rubbery plastic.\u00a0 I\u2019m curious to see how these pieces will age.\u00a0 I\u2019m hoping they\u2019ll be ok, but I have a sneaking suspicion they might start molting that white chemical dust after a few years.\u00a0 I hope I\u2019m wrong though.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs05.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15996\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs05.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roger\u2019s paint job is almost non-existent since almost every piece of his body is molded in black.\u00a0 There are the terrific white accents to his suit, which stand out really well in pictures.\u00a0 Something I found really surprised is that the bottoms of his feet are painted brown, like real dress shoes.\u00a0 That\u2019s a nice little touch.\u00a0 Something I was a bit disappointed in is that Roger\u2019s skin tone is nearly the same as Dorothy\u2019s.\u00a0 This is fine for Roger, but it just emphasizes even more that Dorothy needed to be made with more of a pale href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15994\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs03.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roger has pretty standard articulation.\u00a0 His head, elbows, knees, and ankles are all swivel\/hinge Figma joints.\u00a0 He has ball joints where his neck meets his body, his torso (although it\u2019s limited by his jacket), and his hips.\u00a0 His shoulders are a Figma joint connected to a ball joint, while his hands are all swivel\/hinge pin joints.\u00a0 I\u2019 m particularly glad they gave him a double jointed neck, making it much easier for him to look up at Big O.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs07.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15998\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs07.jpg?resize=527%2C640\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs07.jpg?w=527&amp;ssl=1 527w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs07.jpg?resize=247%2C300&amp;ssl=1 247w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs07.jpg?resize=400%2C485&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The majority of Roger\u2019s accessories are alternate body parts.\u00a0 There is the standard set of five interchangeable pairs of hands:\u00a0 holding, fists, fists with the thumb out, open, and open with splayed fingers.\u00a0 All the hands are gloved and painted black.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are his three alternate faces: determined and looking to the left, sunglasses on, and mouth open and yelling.\u00a0 All three heads look great on the figure, but I\u2019m really disappointed that he wasn\u2019t given a fourth smiling face.\u00a0 Roger isn\u2019t a grimdark character and he smiled or had a pleasant look on his face quite often.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs08.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15999\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs08.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs08.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs08.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aside from his Figma stand, Roger comes with two other accessories.\u00a0 The first is an alternate left forearm which has its sleeve rolled back and is showing the watch he uses to signal Big O.\u00a0 This is a super important accessory and I\u2019m really glad they added it.\u00a0 The second is a briefcase full of hundred dollar bills that he used in the first episode to pay a ransom.\u00a0 This is a nice little touch, but unfortunately the money is painted on a panel and can\u2019t be removed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs09.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16000\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs09.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs09.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.itsalltrue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/rogs09.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m also a bit disappointed that he doesn\u2019t come with anything else.\u00a0 As with Dorothy, there\u2019s really no reason for him not to come with a tomato.\u00a0 A tiny \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This figure may have a few problems, but they\u2019re entirely excusable because it\u2019s an actual toy of friggin\u2019 Roger Smith!\u00a0 I never thought they\u2019d make one, and I\u2019m so happy to have it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure if Max Factory is going to make any more Big O figures.\u00a0 I would love to get Norman, and Schwarzwald, and Angel\u2026\u00a0 Really I just want the entire cast.\u00a0 But if it doesn\u2019t happen, I\u2019ll at least be content with the fact that Roger and Dorothy got some plastic
