<\/a>I wasn\u2019t expecting to buy any of the new Transformers movie toys until much later.\u00a0 Like in a year or so, when the non-movie movie figures start making their way to the shelves.\u00a0 But when I saw Hatchet at my local Target, he was just too cool to pass up.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t even seen Transformers: Dark o f the Moon yet, which is another reason why I thought it\u2019d be easy to avoid the movie toys.\u00a0 But when you walk past them on every toy run, there\u2019s bound to be a couple that catch your eye.\u00a0 For me it was Hatchet and Laserbeak (who I\u2019ll cover in an upcoming review).\u00a0 So why was I so compelled to pick up Hatchet?\u00a0 Because the first thing I thought of when I saw him was \u201cHoly crap, it\u2019s a Transformers Terror Dog!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

While Hatchet isn\u2019t exactly a spitting image of the Terror Dogs from Ghostbusters, he does have this great monstrous quality to his robot\/beast form.\u00a0 Although the figure can be posed standing solely on his hind legs, he just looks so much more intimidating on all fours.\u00a0 In fact, with his gaping mouth and splayed claws, this figure exudes feral energy and it\u2019s hard not to pose him in a coiled or lunging position.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I was also pretty impressed by the sculpted details of this figure.\u00a0 His head sculpt alone is chock full of details like slicked back ears, razor sharp teeth, and even a nose ring like you\u2019d see on a bull.\u00a0 I love that his jet engines encircle his head like a collar, and that there\u2019s two claws coming off of one knuckle on his hands.\u00a0 There\u2019s even hidden details.\u00a0 If you open up his back you\u2019ll see more wires and the base of his spine-like tail inside his chest.\u00a0 That\u2019s a fantastic touch from the sculptor and something you just don\u2019t expect on such a small figure.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Hatchet\u2019s also got some nice articulation, although it does mostly limit him to a dog-like position.\u00a0 His head probably suffers the most here because it\u2019s on a hinge joint and can only look up and down. \u00a0It would have been great if they could have added a swivel to this so you could give him those animal-like head turns.\u00a0 His hips are on ball joints, while his shoulders are on swivel ball joints.\u00a0 His elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles are all hinge joints.\u00a0 He has a very limited hinged waist, and his tail has three hinge joints giving it a scorpion-like quality.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

His transformation is pretty basic, taking me back to my childhood when I didn\u2019t need instructions to know how to play.\u00a0 Hatchet turns into a sleek black jet with gold highlights.\u00a0 His front landing gear is on a hinge and can be raised for flying.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

One thing that\u2019s hard to ignore is his undercarriage.\u00a0 Hatchet\u2019s long front arms fold up underneath the wings, giving him a bulky look.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mind that so much.\u00a0 What really bothers me is that his claws just hang out the back in plain sight.\u00a0 Talk about annoying kibble.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Hatchet comes with two guns that turn into little drone planes.\u00a0 Both can be stored on the bottom side of his wings in jet mode or robot\/beast mode.\u00a0 He can also hold them in his hands like two blasters.\u00a0 You can even attach them end to end to make a rifle, although he holds it a bit silly because of his limited head and arm articulation.\u00a0 Personally, I don\u2019t think the figure needs weapons with those massive claws and vicious chops.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For an impulse buy, this figure turned out even better than I expected.\u00a0 I think I paid about $9, and he\u2019s totally worth it.\u00a0 The only thing that could make this figure better is if they remade him later in a larger scale.\u00a0 With the amount of detail that was packed into this tiny Commander class, I can only imagine how awesome the Voyager class would turn out.<\/p>\n
