<\/a>When I heard they were making this figure, I had to have it. Not because I\u2019m an Assassin\u2019s Creed fan (I\u2019ve never played the games) but because it has the distinction of being the very first action figure based on the eerie look of the historical figures known as Plague Doctors.<\/p>\n

This figure\u2019s based on a multiplayer character in the game Assassin\u2019s Creed: Brotherhood.\u00a0 The Doctor\u2019s true name is Malfatto, and he uses his poison syringe to carry out his executions.\u00a0 Although he has very little personality, his game bio leaves no question that he is a true sadist and has killed more people than he has ever treated.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

But the reason I\u2019m interested in him is not for who he is, but what he looks like.\u00a0 Plague doctors are one of those interesting footnotes in history we don\u2019t normally hear about.\u00a0 They were special physicians under contract with cities to treat only those suffering from plague.\u00a0 This way the doctor and his patients could remain in a quarantine, hopefully minimizing the spread of the disease.\u00a0 This profession dates as far back as the mid 500s in Constantinople.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t until the seventeenth century that the now familiar bird-masked costumes were developed and commonly used.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The costumes themselves usually consisted of a long robe-like garment that was made from leather and then coated in wax.\u00a0 Their leather gloves were similarly coated in wax, while their wide brimmed hood not only protected their head but also indicated their profession.\u00a0 Their mask had glass lenses to protect the eyes and contained aromatic herbs and flowers in the beak, which acted as a crude gas mask.\u00a0 These doctors also would carry long wooden sticks which they used to examine patients or move clothing without having to touch the patients.<\/p>\n

I’ve always found their ominous bird-like appearance a suitably creepy match for their occupation, and I’m thrilled to finally be getting a toy of one.<\/p>\n

This figure was made by Unimax Toys.\u00a0 I\u2019m not really familiar with them but I have to say they did an excellent job with the sculpt on this figure.\u00a0 Aside from the folds and wrinkles on his overcoat, you can also see the more subtle quilted patterns on his arms and his gloves have these tiny serrated seams.\u00a0 Then there are the objects on his belt which have been sculpted\/molded separately and glued on.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Even his syringe has a nice amount of detail for something so small.\u00a0 Continue to page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

The figure\u2019s biggest problem is his paint job.\u00a0 Luckily this figure wears a lot of drab clothing which is mostly molded the proper color.\u00a0 The real issues come in on the details.\u00a0 It seems like every painted surface has some amount of slop to it.\u00a0 There are no real straight painted lines.\u00a0 Plus, the smaller the detail the more inaccurate the application, like they only had one size of brush.\u00a0 The worst part about the sloppy paint is that it covers up some of the great sculpted details of the figure.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Doctor\u2019s head, waist, and wrists are all swivel joints.\u00a0 Strangely, the head and waist both look like they could be ball joints, but they just don\u2019t move that way.\u00a0 His shoulders, elbows, and ankles are all swivel\/hinges.\u00a0 While his hips are ball joints and his knees are hinges.\u00a0 This gives him a pretty nice range of movement, but his long robes are a bit thick and do hinder his articulation below the belt.<\/p>\n

The Doctor doesn\u2019t come with any accessories since his syringe is molded to his right hand.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really mind this, but it would have been nice to get an extra right hand that was open.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t remember exactly how much I paid for him, but I think he was on sale at Target for about $7, which isn\u2019t a bad price.\u00a0 I\u2019d be curious to know what the game fans think of these figures.\u00a0 To me, he\u2019s not the perfect representation of a plague doctor, but he\u2019s also not too bad, especially for the first one ever.\u00a0 So I definitely found him worth the money and wouldn\u2019t say no to a six inch version if NECA chose to do one.<\/p>\n
