Some figures you love right away, some figures make you love them, some figures just fill out the shelf a bit (or came with a critical C&C piece), and some figures you buy only because you maintain a DC Universe Classics Checklist. These guys are the last two.

This part of the review is usually where I give a brief bio on the character, but I think we can gloss over ol’ Hal Jordan a bit. He’s normally green, a bit of a spotlight hog, and he’d sleep with your sister without so much a second thought about how you’d feel about it tomorrow. I think that sums it up.

These two figures showcase Hal Jordan as he appeared for three total panels in two comics in 2010 when he was very temporarily in possession of a black ring and a white ring.

When you look at the rest of DCUC Wave 17, the obvious omission is a Red Lantern Mera. Toy Guru commented that making a Mera would cost the equivalent of 4 other figures, and so collectors were left with an incomplete set and Wave 17 was short an obvious sixth figure. To finish off the spectrum, Mattel turned to ol’ reliable – Hal Jordan.

Hal’s sculpt is almost entirely the original buck, but with the “recession” ankles. Each figure includes a newly sculpted head & ring hand. It looks like the hands have the proper sculpted rings on them, but it’s hard to tell on the final figures. White Hal’s looks more like an orange ring and my Black Hal has a black blob on his hand that kinda has the Black Lantern symbol in it.

On the head sculpts, both are well executed, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out why White Lantern Hal is so unhappy. The Black Lantern makes sense – heck, Hal was even screaming in the two panels from Green Lantern #50 where he was black. Admittedly, Hal Jordan was also yelling in his one panel as a White Lantern, but the concept behind a White Lantern just implies he should have a more tranquil expression. White Lantern Sinestro is smiling after all.

While the Black Hal head sculpt is my favorite of the two, there was one critical error on the figure. He should have gray skin. When Nekron turned nine of the resurrected heroes into Black Lanterns – they got groovy black costumes and healthy gray skin tones. Hal doesn’t look bad with normal skin, but I’d prefer if the figure matched the other DC Direct Black Lanterns at least. Continue to Page 2…

In terms of paint & colors, these figures are worlds apart. As I said, I like the Black Hal. The figure looks sharp on the shelf and there’s a nice sheen to the black areas of the costume. The face is painted particularly well and the hair looks great with the black wash. His left shoulder was a little sloppy, but otherwise he was done well.

White Lantern Hal just doesn’t seem right to me. There were some QC issues – you can see in the pic above that Hal is prematurely balding and has some left shoulder problems. I was more disappointed by the color choice on the white though. I love the silver, but I wish the white were brighter; they just look a bit dingy.

The most disappointing thing about the figures though… was no lanterns! I’ll try not to go into a mini-rant here, but sometimes toy companies don’t really seem to understand the nature of a collector. We’re a little obsessive. While I view Geoff Johns’ whole rainbow lantern concept as a little silly, I do enjoy it. And ever since I saw this picture, I’ve wanted all the batteries as accessories, even white & black. DC Direct finally just made a white lantern, but we’re still waiting on a black one from them. Mattel similarly missed the boat, by providing lanterns for all the other figures in this wave* and not tossing in two more repaints to cover white & black. It’s annoying.

Anyway, reviews like this are hard to write. I’m at the end and I feel like I’ve been complaining and nitpicking my way through the whole thing. I don’t think either of these figures is bad, but they don’t seem to have a lot going for them. I would’ve expected to like the White Hal Jordan more, but the dingy white, angry expression, and paint issues leave me a bit cold. The Black Hal does have the inaccurate skin tone, but the figure looks pretty good and I ended up being a lot happier with him as a result.

At the end of the day though, I bought Hal because he came with a C&C piece and I bought the other for this review/completism. That doesn’t happen very often with this line and I don’t much like it.

For more DC reviews, check out our
DC Universe Classics Collector’s Guide.

I found this review particularly difficult to write.
