Alpha Phase Outer Space Men
In Hand Images

Being approximately in 1/18 scale, the Outer Space Men will fit into most of the vehicles designed for Star Wars, G.I. Joe, etc. I only really have the one Star Wars vehicle these days, and it’s now dubbed the “old crappy AT-AT”. There’s not really a good spot in the AT-AT to put them, but I’m sure they’d look great in a variety of Star Wars vehicles.

Meanwhile, I’ve got a ton of Joe vehicles! While they fit in those pretty well too, the OSM don’t really seem at home in military-based vehicles. Maybe we could pretend they’re running loose on Earth and commandeering vehicles as they need them. They’d no doubt start out on a military base…

Of course, if we’re going to be imagining things, we may as well have them commandeer something cool, right? Besides, they’d no doubt have to escape a maximum security stockade and head for the Los Angeles underground and survive as soldiers of fortune. No? Well, that plays at my house…

We’d be remiss if we didn’t show them in scale with their brothers from another mother, Glyos. Some parts like the pin in Metamorpho’s head or the OSM weapons don’t use the standard Glyos pegsize, but they are otherwise completely interchangeable. I think we’re going to be seeing some crazy crossovers for some time to come. For today, I was content to mix & match some OSM pieces and see what I could get out of them on their own. I haven’t quite made the leap to seeing the OSM figures as pieces just yet.

I’m still struggling with completism on the Outer Space Men line – do I want to try and get all the colorways? I don’t know, but these little guys aren’t helping. I already wish I had an extra Inferno/Metamorpho so I could keep that red/white fella up there around full time!

While I eagerly anticipate the main release, these versions are great! They look retro, they feel like toys, they’re a ton of fun. Not only are Mel Birnkrant’s designs alive and well, but it feels like the Outer Space Men are going to bridge a gap between the traditional action figure and the awesomeness that is Glyos for a lot of collectors.

  1. Thanks for the pics! The scale and exploded views are particularly helpful. Looking forward to the review. When are the standard ones due out?

  2. Great pics, Noisy! I missed out on these since I couldn’t sign up at Fantastic Exclusive but it’s the standard releases I want most anyways.

    1. These are a fun diversion, but the final painted versions are going to be the good stuff! Hopefully, they’ll be plenty of those to go around.

  3. Good call on holding off on the full review. But this mini-review you did covered just enough. Thanks.

  4. Wow, these look excellent. I hope the regular releases won’t be too difficult to obtain. Thanks for the pics, ND!

    1. I don’t think the regulars will be, but you never know – there was some worry about these selling out, but when SDCC raised the OSM profile – the sets quadrupled in price on eBay…

  5. They almost look just like I remember. If I buy these, I’m only going to purchase the original thirteen.

  6. Great mini-non-review! I really hope I can score a set of these at some point, since I got hosed out of the initial website release.

  7. I didn’t get a shot at these either and looking at your pics I definitely missed out. Hopefully the real ones will be out soon.
