Mattel Announces Swift Wind
Live Poll & SDCC Vouchers

Today on Facebook, Matty announced the creation of a voucher system for their San Diego Comic Con 2010 exclusives. Attendees will be able to buy the vouchers early in a special sale on Tuesday, July 13th and then pick their items up at the show. More details after the jump.

SDCC Fans,

The Matty team has answered the call of the fans… for the first time ever we’re going to offer a limited number of products (and limited quantities) for pre-sale here on MattyCollector.com for pick up at SDCC! We’re still finalizing the details, but here’s basically how it’ll work:

  • Be at MattyCollector.com on Tuesday, 7/13 at 9 a.m. PT (noon ET).
  • Choose the items you want and add them to your cart. Purchase limit of 6 per person applies to all products.
  • Your credit card will be charged and a confirmation email (voucher) will be sent.
  • Bring your voucher, the credit card you used for the transaction, your identification, and your Comic-Con badge to Manchester Room 1 at the Marriott San Diego Hotel and Marina, which is just next door to (and connected to) the San Diego Convention Center.
  • Pick up your product on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday: 10 AM – 12 noon or 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM. All sales are final. There are NO REFUNDS so be sure to pick up your purchase(s).
  • If you are only attending Comic-Con on Sunday, this option is not available to you.
  • If you don’t pick up your product by the end of the show on Saturday, your product will go into the products available for sale at the show on Sunday. You may be able to purchase it then, but there are no guarantees.
  • Products cannot be shipped. This option is for pick up at SDCC only, and only available to SDCC attendees (badges will be required).

Please note: there is a limited amount of each product available for pre-sale. It’s first-come, first-served and there are no promises you’ll be able to purchase a voucher for every product. But if you’ve successfully purchased a voucher, you’re guaranteed to get your product – including SDCC-exclusive Starro spores, Plastic Man suitcase, and Orko® with color-change features!

Here are the products we’ll have available for pre-sale. Individual product pages will be posted soon, but you can see images here in the meantime.

  • Masters of the Universe® Mo-Larr vs Skeletor® Figures
  • Masters of the Universe® Orko® Figure (with SDCC-exclusive color-change features)
  • Cars Toon Tokyo Mater
  • DC Universe Plastic Man Figure (with suitcase)
  • Justice League of America presents Starro the Conqueror (with Starro spores)

  • Retro-Action™ The Real Ghostbusters™ Peter Venkman™ Figure
  • Toy Story 3 Disney/Pixar Collection Lotso Figure
  • World Wrestling Entertainment® Undertaker® Figure

If you miss this sale or the product you want is sold out for pre-sale, we’ll still have these products available for purchase at SDCC subject to availability (see below). We’ll have lots more at the show besides the ones listed above (to be announced soon), so be sure to stop by booth #2945 either way!

For those who can’t attend the show, we’ll also offer limited quantities of these products after the show on MattyCollector.com on 8/2 at 9 a.m. PT (noon ET), although the SDCC-exclusive Starro Spores and Plastic Man suitcase won’t be included, and Orko won’t have color-change features. More details will come on this special sale as it gets closer.

We know you’ll have lots of questions, but as I said, the team is still working out the logistics and I’ll let you know the details as soon as I have them. Please post your questions here and I’ll try to include the answers in my future posts.

— Matty

Later in the evening, Matty posted this poster to Facebook:

Looks like the color of Swift Wind will be voted in more officially than the issue of Panthor’s flocking and the subsequent debate about what happened at SDCC. Personally, I can’t say I have a..uh, horse in this race. I suppose white would offend my masculinity less, but I’m not sure how much I need this particular MOTUC horse. Oh all-inclusive, optionless, subscription – how I loathe you.

  1. Hmm… I wonder how Mattel will find a way to screw this up. The WSOD on Tuesday? Not having enough product to meet vouchers + sales everyday? Oh, let me count the ways.

  2. I have a bad feeling about whatever Matty is planning to do to that facebook badge.

  3. I don’t see this ending well. I see there seems to be a LOT of steps in place to weed out scalpers and that’s good, but it all hinges on their site being up to the task of dealing with the traffic, right?

I assume part of the idea is to not have the Mattel booth be a madhouse. I doubt strongly this will have any effect, except maybe for people who came to the con expecting to buy stuff and it’s all sold out before the doors even open.

*sigh* Remember when you used to be able to just walk into a store, see a cool toy and buy it? No pressure, no hassle, no concern that if you don’t grab it NOW you’ll never ever find it again? bleah.

  4. this will be matty effup of epic proportions.

    “but 6 is too much!”

“me matty, employee give out more than 6! nrrrgh..”

  5. I’m sad about the live vote because I want a pink Swift Wind and that really has no chance.

Why do the SDCC people get to pick what the subscribers are forced to buy anyway?

  6. LOL @ the “Every vote counted” on the Swift Wind thing.

After the Panthor vote caused them so many headaches, I guess they want something a little more empirical this time around.

(And incidentally, looks like Swift Wind has suffered the same fate as Scare Glow, and is no longer worthy of the space between the words. Can’t wait until we get a release of Kinghiss. 😛 )

  7. I am legitimately mad that the Polly Pocket figures are not available for the pre-order. My fiance found them cute so I was going to add them to the list of pick ups. I am not braving that line just for Polly Pocket. Any idea if they will be available with the rest of the SDCC stuff on 8/2?

  8. It makes me crazy. Pink horse/white horse is not equal to flocked/unflocked Panthor.

Flocked Panthor involves an extra manufacturing step. White or Pink, that’s just a color change in plastic.

any why wouldn’t Mattel want to make extra money by selling BOTH flavors of Swifty? Or how about, and this is clearly insane of me to suggest this, using color change technology to make the horse BOTH colors?

Watch, coming soon: “we’re going to make ONE vehicle and only one for the MOTUC line, ever. Which should it be?”

  9. Man, I can’t let it go. Sorry, everybody.

5000 Quatloos that when you sign on and manage to avoid the RED DEATH screen, you will have a little surprise, a special surcharge tacked on, either for CC handling or some such thing.

Because they can’t let go of that sweet, sweet profit margin they get from shipping…

  10. This does just seem like another way for Matty to F-up the con. What happens if they have shortages at the hotel? Do you get a partial order and are allowed back? How will that logistically be controlled/monitored? Do you keep coming back each day till they can fullfill your entire order? And how on god’s green earth can they say if you dont pick the item up, you’re SOL? I’d call my CC company and tell them to reverse the damn charge. Easy as pie! You cant sell something to someone, make the profit and tax, then if it’s not picked up, keep the money and resell it!! I can’t see how that’s above board.

    1. The logistics of it gives me nightmares, because it relies totally on EVERYONE doing their job 100%.

-the toys have to all cleared Customs by now, and sitting in a warehouse.

-all the reservations from the web deal have to be finalized, sorted and organized.

-the reservation toys have to be pulled, tagged and separated from the general sales stock. It would be too much to assume they’ll pre-sort and box up every single order, there’s just no time.

-the toys have to be transported to the SDCC, where the dock handlers will throw boxes willy-nilly onto transport carts thus disrupting the sorting process. It’s possible a few cases may ‘fall off the back of the truck’ and vanish. Hey, it happens. NEW JERSEY. (sorry)

-The booth is pretty big but it’s still limited space. The reservation toys HAVE to be completely separated from the general stock. There should be specific people in charge of it and the entire booth staff (including any corp. VPs who drop by for photo ops) should understand what’s going on.

-paperwork, paperwork, paperwork. Everything must be tracked.

And all this in a room full of 100,000 nerds, Hollywood people, TV crews, pretty girls in costumes, ugly girls in costumes, a sound level that probably violates some federal guideline and a stench factor of break the dial.

actually, now I wish I could be there just to watch…
