Vault Review: NECA Friday the
13th NES Jason (SDCC 2013)

The reason for the different colors is because his mask, hands, feet, and the blades of his weapons all glow-in-the-dark.  While the weapons use the traditional green, Jason’s mask and body parts were done in blue.  You don’t see a lot of non-green glow-in-the-dark these days, and I’m always happy when a company can give us a little change from the norm.

Jason’s articulation is pretty good.  His head, torso, and wrists are on ball joints.  I think his feet are too, but they’re so limited by the pants sculpt that it’s hard to tell.  His shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees are all swivel hinges.  He also has a swivel joint at the top of his thigh.  All around it’s pretty standard for what NECA has been churning out lately.

Jason comes with three accessories.  First is his classic hockey mask.  Then there are his two weapons, a machete and an axe.  Both weapons were used in the game and I’m glad NECA included both of them, especially since he can only hold one at a time.  Both weapons are made out of glow-in-the-dark green and have brown painted handles.

A figure that celebrates a twenty year old terrible game may seem unnecessary to some, but this is exactly the kind of niche products I tend to be drawn to.  Figures like this are a fantastic homage to the time and nerd culture I grew up in, and NECA is doing a wonderful job bringing the nostalgia to life with figures like NES Jason, Night Fighter RoboCop, and the upcoming Kenner Predators.  These are the types of things that will always have room on my shelf.

P.S.  If anyone at NECA is reading this, may I suggest a future NES cover recreation of the original Contra.  Repainted versions of Dutch, Rambo, and an Alien would make for an amazing three pack.

  1. I’m surprised that it looks so good!! I mean, the color scheme actually works!

    1. I think he turned out pretty well. But I’m partial to crazy color variants like Halloween Skeletor.

  2. I used to rent the game alot. Never found in store but enjoyed it. This would be a fig I would look for just for the nostalgia factor.

Blows the Movie line Mcfarlene did out of the water. Even if own the bloody Freddy and Jason twopack.

    1. If they did an official release of that, I’d Konami code my wallet so fast to get them!

  3. I watched the AVGN review in anticipation of getting this figure. I never played this game growing up with the NES, and I’m kind of glad I didn’t.

The box is so sweet though I don’t even want to take it out of the shrink wrap.

  4. this is how comic con exclusives should be done! he looks great and that packaging is just beyond perfect. YAY NECA!

  5. This would be worth getting just for the sheer wackiness of it.

Btw, for those interested, the original movie’s Jason, Ari Lehman, has a band called “First Jason”. I got to meet him at MidSouth 2011 and again at Contamination 3 last year. Unfortunately, both are same weekend this year, so he chose Louisville (Jefferton?), while I’m staying closer to home in SoCo St Louis for Contamination 4.

(I’m now apparently giving a ride to Steven LaChance and his boys, who are doing their table. not sure about Pops’ haunting presentation? Also, Ari is like 5ft tall, which is funny because Steve’s “little boy” is a big fan. literally. at 7ft.)
