Outer Space Men Cyclops
Review (Infinity Edition)

The sculpt itself is top-notch as expected with plenty of little details throughout the figure. I love the harsher angles on the figure, particularly the face. Cyclops size is worrisome enough, but his sharp details and clawed feet & hands ensure that you don’t want to meet this guy in a dark milky way. Another nice touch on the sculpt is the addition of two little lines on his chest symbol. These lines are a shout out to Matt Doughty over at Onell as they transform his already Pheyden-like symbol into being a really Pheyden-like symbol. You have to love little stuff like that!

I’d say the paint work is still sharp for a figure this size, but I did have a few little oddities like the darker copper stain on the gold circles on the figures chest and some fuzzy lines here and there. The colors themselves looks fantastic though – the figure is molded white so all the colors pop on the figure. The metallic blue and flat purple really stand out with the gold areas finishing off the look. One other nod here is the purple coloring on the palms. For some reason, it just looks really sharp. I love it.

Articulation is a little better than your average OSM thanks to an extra swivel at the elbow. I think if anything held OSM back a bit, it’s the lack of traditional articulation and I still find that to be true here. There is plenty of great movement using the swivels (14 in all, I think), particularly on the arms where those extra joints come in handy.

Cyclops included two of his classic pistols and five pieces of armor to round things out. I love the gold paint, but I can’t help the desire to want to display Cyclops without the armor. The colors and sculpt are just too great to cover up. They are cool pieces though – the helmet looks sharp with its one slit for the Cyclops eye. The armor is hard to pass on though. It looks sharp and can help to hold a couple of the accessories. Also included of course is the “bubble helmet” I love those, but didn’t take many pictures because I couldn’t find the little box I built to avoid the my reflection ending up in the picture.

Overall, I was happy to receive this set because it reawakened a section of my collecting that I’d been a little buy for. The OSM are just a fun set to collect, particularly any painted versions. I think what really gets me here though is the history. Yes Cyclops is well sculpted, decently painted, etc., but what really gets me is the idea that Cyclops has finally, finally gotten a figure! I’m not old enough to know much of anything about the originals, but how cool is it for a concept to finally reach it’s fruition over forty years later! I know there are collectors out there who surely wanted Cyclops to finally hit figure form – and they’ve waited a really long time. I don’t know – not to wax on all poetic, but on the back of Cyclops vintage packaging is a picture of the “unreleased original” and it really gets me thinking. Is there some cancelled toy, one that I want now, that I’m going to see pop up for realz when I’m in my seventies?

Probably not. And that makes the OSM pretty darn special.

  1. uh…site glitch? p2 link is both pages together?

looks cool, but can’t afford another line.
(esp want the other guy looking like he escaped from This Island Earth!)

  2. Sweet review and great pics, as ever.

Man, does this Cyclops look like a 1970s Japanese TV monster, or what?

As nifty as this series is, I just can’t add another line to my collecting. Especially when there are so many variants, and all versions done in very low numbers.

  3. The new Mel CC set looks cool, but I’ve been paring down a lot lately, so as a result I’m predominantly buying the “normal” versions of the OSM.

Cyclops is really awesome, though I think they overshot just a little on his size. I think he’s just a tad TOO big.

  4. I don’t understand this toyline at all. I mean, to me, they look like something you’d find at the dollar store. “SPACE HERO!” and there’s a pic of one of the Power Rangers with Superman’s S-Shield on his chest on the card.

Again, that’s just my take on it.

    1. I agree, although I think that’s part of its charm, the other part being the aura of the 4H.

    2. I think you have to understand the history of these to truly appreciate them.

These were among the first de facto “action figures” in history, and subconsciously or otherwise inspired every line that followed, knock-off or not.

To ero’s point: No, I don’t think I’d be as interested if they weren’t 4H-made, but then again, I don’t think they’d be half as good, either.

  5. I love me some outer space men (if anybody has a wave 1 & 2 alpha set they want to sell please contact me). But I have to say Cyclops is the most disturbing figure if you imagine that everywhere that is blue is exposed skin.

  6. I don’t know whether it’s just me or if perhaps everybody else experiencing issues
with your website. It looks like some of the written text within your content are running off the screen.
Can somebody else please provide feedback and let me know if
this is happening to them as well? This may be a issue with my internet browser because I’ve had this happen before. Cheers
