Vault Review: Star Wars Vintage Collection: Dagobah Luke

The paint job on this figure is equally nice. I’m really glad they replaced the stark white leg straps with a light grey; it makes them look less new. His boots are also a darker gray while his belt is now brown. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of paint on details that were painted previously. Little things like the pip on the left side of his chest weren’t there during those scenes in the movie, so I don’t mind when they’re not painted. But they also didn’t paint the little latches that hang down from his belt to hold the lightsaber. Definitely a missed opportunity, especially since the peg on his saber connects right at that point.

Something else that is missing is the lack of dirt on the figure. This figure is based off the scene where Luke crashes and is wandering around the swamp. I personally don’t mind that the figure isn’t grimy. It allows me to use him for other things besides a crash site survivor. But without the muck, this “Dagobah Landing” luke isn’t quite as accurate. It makes me wonder if they’ll release a messier version of the figure down the road.

Luke comes with his X-Wing helmet, his blaster, a lightsaber that on and another that’s just the hilt. All of which fit on him very nicely. Well, maybe not the helmet. It seems a little big.

This figure, like most of The Vintage Collection, is also nicely articulated. His head and waist are ball joints. His shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles are all swivel hinges. Luke’s wrists and hips are swivels. These joints give him some really nice movement. I just wish his hips could move out more. Those hinged hip joints really cut down on what could be some fantastic posing.

All around I’m a pretty big fan of this figure, even if I’m not the biggest fan of the character. He goes well with the rest of the characters, and he’ll be difficult for future “X-Wing Luke”s to top. I’m pretty sure I won’t need another one, even with the very few issues I had. Now he just needs his wingman Wedge to help him blow up a few Death Stars and score some chicks at the cantina.

  1. I have to say, I’m more and more impressed with these SW figs you’re reviewing.

I can’t believe they actually are giving figures holsters that actually hold the gun. Sadly, due to material restrictions they look huge and kinda bulky but man, I would have killed for that back during the original figures run in the late ’70s. I’m also impressed they’re still including both lit and off lightsaber hilts.

What’s really great about these figures (to my mind, because I think weird) is the attention to detail on the part of the sculptors is so good, so obsessive, you can catalog every re-use and short cut in costumes and props. 🙂

    Yet another great review, Vault!

    1. Thanks Steve.

The amount of detail they’re packing into these new figures is really great. I can already tell this line’s going to be a new drain on my wallet, lol.

  2. Agreed, the sheer quality of reviews on this site can only be applauded.

Another Figure I was so-so about (how many Pilot Lukes does a Guy need?) but having seen the likeness I know I’m going to end up getting this one – if I can actually find it. The monkey-arms are annoying though, same thing on the recent Vintage Anakin, makes me sometimes wonder if Hasbro really does have a special consultant who takes current figures to damn close to perfection but then throws in some random imperfection that means there will always be one more version down the pike that “corrects” the defect and makes Mugs like me pick up another sale.

Keep the Star Wars love coming.

  3. Yeah, these Star Wars figures are getting more and more awesome–and there looks like there’s no end in sight. Bring ’em on, I say! ;P

I was lukewarm about Luke here (Heheh) but now I’m liking that head sculpt more and more. Pity that the last pilot Luke with the balaclava has the good ball jointed hips. Lukes like we’ll have to get two figures to put together the ultimate pilot Luke! (Double Heheh…)

  4. The new Dagobah Landing Luke is great, but the long arms started to drive me crazy over time. But, now that I’ve brought the back to scale the figure is in perfect proportion, however he doesnt hold the saber with two hands as easily. But hey, I’d rather have Luke holding a saber in one hand than an ape dressed as Luke with a saber in two!
