<\/a>Sometimes I find the unexpected on my bi-weekly visits to Toys R Us. Last week, I was surprised to see the new Minimates vehicles hanging on the pegs. The Hunter Killer from Terminator was particularly tempting, but I eventually decided to just get one. And the Back to the Future<\/em> Delorean was it.<\/p>\n

I remember seeing pictures of these vehicles from SDCC and Toyfair, but it still feels like they snuck up on me. Maybe it\u2019s because I was expecting to see them solicited by Diamond. That\u2019s where I usually keep track of Minimates happenings. But this set of vehicles is an exclusive to Toys R Us, at least according to the stickers they all brandished. So head on over to your local TRU if you\u2019re looking to pick up a tiny time machine, a micro jet plane, or even a lil\u2019 Hunter Killer.<\/p>\n

Most Minimates share the same body basic body design, and Marty here is no different. He has a ball jointed head, shoulders, and hips. His elbows and knees are hinges. While his waist, wrists, and ankles are swivel joints. Marty comes with an extra sculpted vest piece that sits over his chest, and two cuff pieces that slide up his arms. For some reason they included an extra set of hands and an alternate hairpiece in the box. I can see getting extra hands in case you lost one, but the extra hair looks terrible and nothing like Michael J. Fox\u2019s. <\/p>\n

This Marty figure is also a repaint of the original figure that was released in a four-pack back in 2007. Although it shares the same basic design, it is much less detailed than the original. Right off the bat you can tell that the colors are a lot darker overall. The light grays and blues of his clothing have been replaced with darker grays. His light brown hair is now dark brown. His vest is red instead of orange. And for some reason his shoes are now a yellowish off-white instead of white. But it\u2019s not the color differences that bother me, it\u2019s the absence of detail. The original figure had leopard print on sleeve cuffs and blue on the shoulders. Also, the shirt part of his vest is painted a light blue. But the new figure just has his painted the color of the vest. Maybe Art Asylum was trying to make this figure a little different from the original. Or maybe they just wanted him to be cheaper. I\u2019m not sure, but either way I like the old Marty better.<\/p>\n

The \u201cMini-Time Machine\u201d isn\u2019t a spot on model of a real DeLorean. I\u2019m assuming that was done on purpose for licensing reasons. So don\u2019t expect a perfect replica here. Like the movie DeLorean, its painted silver with black trim and both doors open upward. On the back are various buttons and tubes and other sculpted bits running around the two exhaust vents to the reactor setting between them. <\/p>\n

With the included stickers you can add the headlights, brake lights, and rear license plate. They even added clear blue bars along the front bumper and over the top to simulate the time traveling action. So even though it\u2019s not perfectly accurate depiction, it still gets the point across that this is a tiny version of Doc Brown\u2019s DeLorean. Continue to Page Two…<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The inside seats and dashboard are all molded in the same color gray. There\u2019s some really nice detailing here also. The emergency brake and gear shift are sculpted between the two seats. The dashboard has sculpted details for different displays and dials. Even the steering wheel was given some definition. I was a little disappointed that the steering wheel doesn\u2019t turn though. With the additional stickers you can put on the flux capacitor, the dashboard display, the time circuit display, two dials, and a random display of buttons.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve got to take a moment and complain about the stickers. Even though they are highly detailed, and you can actually make out tiny dates on the time circuit, they are also insanely small. The inside of the DeLorean is also tiny. This makes it very difficult to place the stickers inside. So, if you buy this toy, you will need a pair of tweezers if you want to put the interior stickers on. <\/p>\n

Also, that random display sticker I mentioned earlier doesn\u2019t actually have a specific spot. The instructions tell you to place it on the ceiling of the car. The only spot on the ceiling is between the two doors, and it has a screw sticking down. This makes it impossible to flatly place that sticker there. Eventually I just put mine below the flux capacitor.<\/p>\n

Like I said earlier, you can only find this at Toys R Us so far, and you can expect to pay about $12 for it. That\u2019s a great price considering a Minimates four-pack will cost you the same. I was expecting to pay at least $15. Even with the annoying stickers, I\u2019m happy with this little DeLorean. I\u2019m also glad it came with a normal looking Marty for those who don\u2019t have him. But I\u2019ll definitely be using my original for display. The only thing that could top this cute car is if Art Asylum makes the hover conversion mode with Mr. Fusion from the second movie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
