And with it came She-Ra, the first figure with increased production following Adorapocalypse in January. What was the net result of the increase? About four minutes longer than Optikk, a little over ten minutes longer than Evil Lyn, and she sold out faster than Adora.

Interestingly, I haven’t heard anything about a future change in production levels even with the quick sellout, but with a few 200x characters in the pike, it may not be a priority for Mattel. Either way, I’m curious to see what the next few months hold.

Isn’t She-Ra so pretty? The head sculpt is really… wait, you don’t see the head on the figure? Weird, that’s how I pulled her out of the package…

If you’ll permit me a tad bit of sarcasm here, I have to say I really enjoyed fixing my $20 “adult collector” figure. I’m sure there’s a good round of “it’s an easy fix” versus “I shouldn’t have to” that can come out of this, but I’ll leave that to others. Suffice to say, She-Ra’s head was not attached and attempts to simply put it back on were not successful. The hole in the bottom of the head simply wasn’t big enough to fit over the ball and my first experiences with She-Ra were some light dremeling to remove excess plastic. All so I could recreate the classic bobblehead that is typical of the females in this line. Now that I’ve mentioned it, I’ll move on and take a look at the figure as intended.

She-Ra utilizes the standard female buck, but has a few more new pieces than the average female receives. Her boots are entirely new, with an internal “rocker” joint, she has new forearms with new gauntlets, the new dress with sculpted details, new cape, two new heads, and the detachable mask.

I like a lot of the new pieces. They’re mostly here for accuracy, but I enjoy how the boots come up to encapsulate the calves for one. It gives a better illusion of depth to that part of the figure. When I saw the Toy Fair pics, I didn’t think the dress had quite the right shape to it and I still think that now, but I can’t put my finger on why it looks off to me. The cape is a separate piece and can be slipped off the neck when the head is unattached. She looks better with it on, mostly because of the choker collar, but it’s one more display option for the figure.

The two heads are both sharp. I don’t believe they’re simple reuses of the Adora head though the face is the same. I removed Adora’s hair to make the custom of my Shopkeeper and the sides of the head are different. I’d have to remove She-Ra’s hair to be sure and I don’t currently have a reason to do that. It’s best guess for now.

I’ll be sticking with the classic head. I think the “toy” head and mask turned out really nice (the holographic stickers give me flashbacks), but I don’t think of the toy when I think of She-Ra. Particularly not when the rest of the figure was made to match the artwork and not the old figure. The mask pegs into a hole in her head that allows for it to be reversible (covering her face or not). I’m with Mattel on this decision, it’s better than fragile clips and with the helmet hair that’s behind the mask, she wouldn’t look good “de-tiaraed” anyway.

Articulation is standard for the line. The hidden rocker joint in the ankle doesn’t have as much range as the earlier exposed joints, but it works. The skirt is fairly pliable and it allows this waist to turn freely, but the longer length now blocks the range of the hips. It’s always something with the MOTU ladies apparently. Finally, the head is wobbly, which is sad because there’s some decent range (no looking up because of the hair) but the loose neck peg and heavy hair can’t hold poses and the head will always return to a fairly neutral position. Continue to Page 2…

One of the things about She-Ra that made everyone here at IAT rejoice was the paintwork. Normally, we have to look through all of them very carefully and then bargain with each other to see who takes the bad ones. Last month, Vault ended up with “air bubble” Optikk as his extra. In April, I took an Evil Lyn with a chunk of eye shadow missing because I needed her for a custom. This month there was still some warble here and there, but by and large everyone got to go home with nicely painted She-Ra’s. The face details were clean all around, and the lines on the chest emblem were sharp on each figure. The only area where we saw many problems was the front v on the belt, but nothing so bad that we docked the figure points.

She-Ra includes three accessories: a sword, a comb/ax, and a shield. We saw the shield at the G1988 show as one of the teaser pieces. The shield is a great update of the original. It follows the classic design (including its small size), but has much better detailing and the jeweled center is finally a “jewel”! The shield will fit on either arm, but it’s designed for the left arm primarily. An interesting thing to note, on the back of her package, she’s holding the shield at her side in a classic pose. It’s not the most stable configuration, but the figure can be posed this way too for a little more variety.

As accurate to the old toy as the shield is, the sword goes in another direction and, color aside, is a closer match for the classic artwork. Collectors have received this sword before, with Adora, in the accurate silver color. She-Ra’s sword is done in gold, to match the classic toy despite the design change. It’s a nice two-tone color which better matches the line than the monochrome silver sword that came with Adora. Catch all those matches? I think I’ll keep She-Ra with the gold sword because it looks good with the overall aesthetic, but the desire to give her the proper silver sword is pretty strong.

Finally, we get the combination comb/axe accessory. I find it more cute than necessary, but the 4H did their usual best in making it a nice blend of homage and interesting. The comb part is reminiscent of the shape of the original, right down to the design on the handle while the bladed side makes it much more deadly this time around. And, thankfully, it’s not pink (Weapons Pak, anyone?). Since She-Ra has molded hair for the first time, the comb side won’t be getting much use though.

Overall, She-Ra is one of the better figures this year. With two heads, three accessories, and several new pieces, I think she’s a better value than some of the figures we’ve gotten. Or maybe I’m just happy to not get another Teela dress. The only real issue I had with her is the head functionality which Mattel has been having problems with since day one with Teela. I like the look of the figure, but I have to wonder how long it’s going to take Mattel to get the heads right on the female figures.

Still, I’m glad to get She-Ra into the group. She’s an important part of the royal family and with her bio adding some future history about her further adventures fighting along side the Masters on Eternia, she’s become a more important part of the mythos overall. As long as the heads finally get on par, I’m ready to see the rest of the POP characters in MOTU Classics.

For more MOTU reviews, check out our MOTU Classics Collector’s Guide.

[7,1026,34,10
586,469
Matty’s Full March-June Schedule!
