I remember the opening theme and Mr. T as B.A. Baracus, of course, but I can’t remember sitting down and watching it. I did have a few of the toys. I had the larger Galoob Mr. T and, for some reason, I have accessories from the 3″ line, although I have no idea who’s they are. Despite my not having a lot of fond memories, I still love the A-Team. When Jazwares announced their new movie line, I couldn’t wait to check them out.

First, I initially intended to buy all four team members (sorry Lynch, maybe you’ll get some love after the movie opens), I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Most of the likenesses are decent – like if you looking at Liam Neeson from really far away, but I couldn’t get past the paint work. You’re really going to have to look your figures over before buying them. There was actually a Face figure with the stubbly beard on just the right side of his face. The other one literally had a brown nose. Since I couldn’t buy Face and complete the team, I decided to stick with the essentials: B.A. and the Van.

Admittedly, B.A. Baracus doesn’t have that great of a paint job either, but the one I left was painted to look very sad. I chose the one with the blob of silver on his shirt. He spilled something, okay? There’s also some yellow on the back of his neck and a black dot on the lower part of his back, but they ended up not being too noticeable and I can overlook them easily. They did a great job on the tampo work though. The tattoos and the screws on his shirt are excellent. I also like the worn look on the jeans.

Aside from certain questionable paint apps, the figure itself is nicely sculpted. Ultimately, he’s just a guy in a shirt and jeans, but the sculptors still found ways to add detail. The shirt has the appropriate muscle definition and corresponding wrinkles while his jeans have sculpted stitching and the boots have sculpted laces and definition on the soles. It’s very simple, but it adds realism to the 4” sculpt.

B.A.’s articulation surprised me. From the press photos, I could tell he had a couple of decent joints, but I was amazed to find he was right up there with a GI Joe. He has ball joints at the head, hips, and ankles. There are swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and knees. While the wrists and waist are cut joints. This gives B.A. a great range of movement, enough to pity any of your other 3 inch figures.

T comes with a rifle and a hand gun. Both are molded out of a too soft black plastic, they’re almost gummy. They both fit into either hand, but very loosely and can be knocked out easily. One thing I did like on the sculpt was that one of B.A.’s holsters was empty. It looks like it could have held the handgun had it not been molded closed. Continue to see the A-Team Van…

The A-Team van is probably one of the most recognizable vehicles to come out of Hollywood. What kid doesn’t want to have their figures driving around, saving the day, in this swanky ride? It’s right up there with the General Lee, Ecto-1, and the Batmobile.

The van itself looks very close to the original TV show version even though it’s for the movie. There’s the signature red stripe, the spoiler on the back, a sun roof, the exterior sun visor, the bull bars on front with fog lights and even a molded wench. There’s also a red GMC logo and a sticker for the back license plate that says RANGR 75. There’s another detail that most toy replicas leave out; the top of the van, above the red stripe, is colored in dark gun metal gray. Most other toy replicas mistakenly color this area black.

The van, its doors, and spoiler, are all made of hard plastic. Everything else like the mirrors, bull bars, visor, and exhaust are all done in a very rubbery soft plastic. This doesn’t bother me, but over time certain parts like the bull bars might warp due to gravity. One part I really do like is that even though the wheels are hard plastic, the tires are rubbery, so it gives off a semi-authentic feel.

The only doors that open are the driver, passenger, and the sliding door on the passenger’s side. The front two doors don’t open all the way, similar to a real vehicle’s. I really wish they would open further, so you could place the figures inside a little easier though. The sliding door is a little strange. There is a track for it to slide on, but it comes off easier than it slides. It’s actually better to just place the door where you want it then to slide it. Continue to Page 3…

The interior of the van is very simple. There are four seats and the front console, all of which are molded in a light gray color. Even though there are no paint apps on the inside, there is a lot of sculpted detail on the console. Air vents, a radio, and various other controls and segmented panels are all present on the dashboard. Some paint or stickers would have really made this part of the van sing. I’m glad the sculptwork is there, but the plain grey plastic doesn’t live up to the sculpt. Another thing I was really disappointed in with the van was the lack of any room behind the two back seats. It would have been nice to have a little area back there, accessible through the two back doors. Instead, the area is blocked off entirely and used for the lights and sounds.

When you push the button, which is the gas cap, you hear one of five sounds. They play in order, looping back to the first one at the end. While each sound is playing, the front headlights blink on and off. (I was lucky to get a van that has a burnt out headlight right out of the box.) All together I find this feature a pretty big waste. If the lights would stay on instead of flashing, that would be better. Also, I don’t really need the movie phrases. They could leave the van’s sound effects I guess, but I don’t really care for them either. What I would have preferred is the A-Team theme song. If I were a kid, playing with this, I know that’s what would be going through my head. So why not make it a feature?

All around, the A-Team figures are okay. They have great articulation, but you do have to be on the lookout for a nice paint jobs. I might pick the rest of them up if I can find some decently painted ones. Also, the van and the figures are both great additions to anyone’s 3 inch figure collection. They could fight off Cobra, or just give the X-Men a ride to the fight. At about $7 a figure, they’re decently priced too. They van will run you $25 which is a littler cheaper than a similarly-sized Joe vehicle. If nothing else, they make great bystander characters and a normal looking vehicle to add to your displays.

-Vault

As a kid, I only had a tangential knowledge of the show.
