I had been eye balling them ever since they hit the stores, but I just didn’t want to spend the money. Well, they finally got me with that sale.

Ironically, it wasn’t Toys R Us who got my money though. By the time I made it there, the aisle had been pretty well cleaned out. A few Mark Vs and badly painted comic Mark IIIs were all that was left. So, I went to Wal-Mart and took advantage of their price matching on advertised sales. They had a much better selection, too much so. Instead of ending up with just the two versions of War Machine that I had originally gone there for, I also found Iron Monger and a movie Mark I that I couldn’t pass up..

The first thing that struck me about these figures is how much more detailed they are than the Marvel Universe line. Sure, they are still the same scale, and they will still fit in just fine, but if you compare them you’ll see a noticeable difference.

Let’s start with Mark I from the first movie. I have a love/hate relationship with this guy. I hadn’t been planning on getting him, but in package his details impressed me so much that I caved. And I wasn’t disappointed, at least in the detail department. He’s got this great looking tarnished metal look to him. There’s even letters stamped on the random pieces, giving the feel that Tony really did just build this toy out of junk in a cave. They also have the details of the “motor” on his back, the treads on his thighs, and you can even see Tony’s pants underneath the armor plates on his legs. He also has a ball jointed head, which none of the others I bought really have. Pretty impressive.

I did have a couple problems with him though. One of his mouth holes didn’t get painted, so it gives mine this strange facial expression. Then, there are the leg joints. I’m not a big fan of how they did the thigh joints in this line, it makes posing these guys a little more work than should be needed. But beyond that, Mark I has nearly impossible knee and ankle joints to move. Every time I was going to pose him for a picture, I felt like I might snap one of the joints. So watch out for that. Continue to Page 2…

Iron Monger’s up next. This figure I bought because he was so big. He’s perfectly in scale with these little three inch guys, and he towers over them like a monster. I love that about him. He’s also sculpted really well. There are pistons and gears and intricate workings on his suit. There are even little machine guns on the sides of his forearms. Another thing I loved about him is his ball jointed wrists. They give his poses a little extra oomph of emotion. The only thing I didn’t like about this big guy was his paint job. Not that it’s bad. It’s just not like the promo pic on the back of the package. In the promo picture, there is a definite shade of blue used to highlight different parts of the armor. The figures paint ended up being a lot more subtle. You can only really tell its blue if the light hits it just right. Other than that, which isn’t really bad, he’s a great figure. Probably my favorite of the four I bought.

Movie War Machine actually impressed me also. I love the War Machine armor. I’m not really sure why, maybe it’s the sleek silver and black look. It could be the overall dangerous and powerful look of a weapon laden Iron Man suit. Either way, I love it, and the movie version doesn’t disappoint. Like the others, he’s got great detailing. There’s a ton of little individual looking plates of armor on him that give his suit a nice manufactured look that the comic book one doesn’t have. His paint is good also, but I had to look at all of them at the store. The paint jobs on this figure are all over the place, so watch out when you go to pick him up. He has machine guns on both his forearms and comes with two guns to mount on his shoulders. One gun is the normal mini Gatling gun, and looks great. The other is a much larger version of that gun that has the action feature of shooting a missile. I realize kids like stuff like that, but that gun is obscenely huge for me. I wouldn’t mind so much if he came with his rocket launcher to replace it with, but he didn’t. So I end up having an empty peg sticking out of him. The cool thing about those shoulder pegs though, is that they can slide back, allowing you to keep his weapons on his back. Another thing I really liked about this figure is his left hand is open, like he’s shooting one of his repulsor blasts. It makes for great posing.

Last, we have Comic Book War Machine. I really love this character, but sadly I think he’s the worst of the four figures I bought. It’s not that there’s anything horrible wrong with him. In fact, I would say he’s actually pretty accurate to the comic book version. It’s just that the Comic version has so little detail, especially when compared to the movie version, that he looks a little plain. I do like that they gave his darker metal color this washed look, it gives the paint a worn and inconsistent feel. I also really like his shoulder mounted Gatling gun and rocket launcher. Like the movie version, these also both slide back behind his shoulders. One of the things I always loved about that armor. Also, there are missile and “gun firing” attachments you can place over each weapon, making them look like they are in use. All together though, he’s a still a decent figure, especially if you love the comic version.

I do have to say, be prepared to look for decent paint jobs in this line. The only figure I was entirely happy with paint-wise was Iron Monger. The rest had mispaints and slop problems. So you’ll want to check those pegs for a decently painted figure. Also, be prepared to have difficult joints. All four of my figures had at least one problem joint. None of them broke, but it sure felt like they could when I was trying to work it out. I know that isn’t something you can really watch out for in the package, but I felt like everyone should be warned. I was sure surprised when I opened mine up.

Other than that, this is a pretty good toy line. From the checklist we’ve put up, I already know they are going to sucker me into buying at least a few more figures.

A couple weeks ago Toys R Us had a sale on their Iron Man 2 figures.
