And I’m not sure what to really say about them. There’s a theme I’ve noticed among toy collectors – strange 80s variants tend to get a pass based on when you caught on with the line, right? In modern times, a character variant is very rarely met with glee, but for MOTU it seems that many of us determine “our” Skeletor or He-Man to be the first one we had as a kid.

I am absolutely guilty of this because Battle Armor is where it’s at. Battle Armor Skelly heads up the villains shelf. Battle Armor He-Man & Faker sit at the top the whole collection. No further He-Man & Skelly’s need apply.

Yet he we are.

It’s cool though because those weirdos that see Flying Fists as “the” He-Man need this guy. And if there really is anybody that sees this Skelly as “the” Skeletor. Well, they need help. Until then, though, they’ve got this figure.

Skelly’s prolly my lesser favorite of the two. He’s pretty much the basic Skeletor, albeit a darker blue. I kinda like that color, it might be interesting to swap some other armors on him to see how it looks. His face is one of the most yellow of all the Skelly’s so far (Except that all-yellow one) and it looks good up there. The only complaint on the reuse is the loincloth. See Battle Armor gets it right with the furry loincloth while this Skeletor reuses his Classics armored loincloth. It’s not a big deal to me, but if this was “my” Skeletor, I might care…

The only real new bit on the figure is the armor, or bra-mor as I find myself calling it. I just said I liked adding the midriff in on Mara, so I’m going to keep it fair – if Skelly wants to show his belly, it’s all good. The armor itself is fine. I like the metallic purple and the skull and it definitely doesn’t obstruct the ab crunch! The clip for the skull-accessory is a bit unsightly, but it kinda fits the theme. No, the only real issue I have on the armor is where the connectors are – right under the armpits and in the way of the biceps. I know, it’s par for the course for the line the last few years, but you still gotta point it out and dream for the future.

Skeletor includes three accessories: his terror claws that clip over his normal wrists and this… dragon skull thing. Has anyone checked on that dragon that came with Dragon Blaster Skelly? I’m concerned. It’s a good recreation of the original. If I had had that maybe I would get it. Instead, I think it’s a grandfathered thing that’s really cool if you first had it when you were ten. It does clip on the back, where it aided the vintage toy in twisting and slashing. Here it’s just nice storage. Continue to Page 2…

He-Man is very nearly the same story as Skeletor. The figure is your basic He-Man with new chest armor. While that may sound like a knock, take note, this may be the last time we get this He-Man head sculpt. There’ll surely be more He-Men figures in the line, we have two incoming right now, but they have different heads. So just a nod to that head sculpt that launched the line if we don’t see it again.

Okay, so the armor – on a complete reuse figure, you better take that armor and just knock it out of the park! Just kill it! And… yeah, no, they didn’t. The first thing to anyone is that the connectors are again in the pretty much the worst place possible and annoyingly bulk up the figure, but that’s not the big deal for Flying Fist Fans.

See, this He-Man was awesome thirty years ago because he was vac-metal. I never had this guy, but heck, I would’ve loved vac-metal armor. Classics has even done vac-metal armor before with Hurricane Hordak, but they didn’t do it here. Now, part of that is because vac-metal Hordak had some issues. They vac-metalled soft, bendable plastic that would cause the vac-metal to flake if you would remove it. And the cheap paint on the symbol came off easily… And with that in mind, I still would’ve liked to see the try again. The armor is actually a cool sculpt and it looks sharp, but it would look better reflective.

He-Man included three accessories and they’re done well, and they make more sense than a random dragon skull (seriously, has anyone seen the dragon from Dragon Blaster Skeletor lately…), but I just don’t know quite what to do with them. The shield is the cooler of the two. It clips on like we’re used to and then the little wi-fi attachment spins around. His other accessory is his three-balled mace. It’s a faithful recreation of the original, though He-Man skipped his back-clip and so it can’t be stored there. He-Man also comes with the traditional Power Sword, though it’s completed unpainted for the first time and… well, lackluster is a good word.

Overall, I know I’m a bit flippant with this review. I just really don’t have it in me to care about these two. I like new characters and stuff I can add to the display that’s not treading the same ground. I do appreciate that these guys got made and their fans can finally be happy. And the pair is definitely toyetic. They look good sitting here, even with the bulky and not metallic armor. I’m still a bit bewildered by the accessories, but they’re not out of line with other weird stuff that Hordak, Tri-Klops, and Man-At-Arms have dreamed up.

Recent MOTU Classics Reviews:

For all our MOTU reviews, check out our
MOTU Classics Collector’s Guide.

[7,34,10
2526,78,20,16,2558,118,2527
Mattycollector announced another upcoming MOTU Classic via a “sneak peek” e-mail to Club Eternia members.
