\"\"<\/a> “And what brings the famous Man-At-Arms to my humble house?”<\/strong> -Oo-Larr (asked sarcastically). “He-Man & the Power Sword” Mini-Comic. <\/p>\n

I was gonna start MOTU Catch-Up Week 2 off with a different figure, but that review was turning out to be a bummer. Mondays are bummer enough. So I poked through the other MOTUC releases from earlier this year to find one that I would have fun talking about. It wasn\u2019t hard to find. It stuck out like a nearly all-naked barbarian in a line of half-naked barbarians. <\/p>\n

Oo-Larr is the He-Man that you didn\u2019t know you wanted. Or maybe you did. MOTU Collectors can never agree on anything! In terms of publication history, Oo-Larr is first. If you were around back in 1982 and snagged a vintage (well, brand new if you\u2019re in 1982) He-Man figure, then you were treated to his origin in the included mini-comic. You would see a strong barbarian wave bye to his tribe, fight a purple bear\/dinosaur thing, save the Goddess, earn his \u201cforcefield costume\u201d (i.e. normal He-Man gear), axe, & shield, and then promptly\u2026 start to build a house. No Eternian Palace, no Power Sword, and definitely no Price Adam. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until Filmation came along with the cartoon that He-Man\u2019s story got a little more familiar to how most of us remember it. And there is plenty in the mini-comics that is also in the cartoon \u2013 Skeletor breaking into Castle Grayskull, Teela, Man-At-Arms, etc. And, of course, He-Man sports the same basic gear. Until now, this has all largely been prologue though, the various incarnations of MOTU refining the overall story each time. Until Classics. The giant jigsaw puzzles of the Classics mythology converted He-Man to a title – one that Adam currently carries and has run through a line of some of Eternia\u2019s greatest heroes \u2013 Vikor, Wun-Dar, & Oo-Larr among them. Oo-Larr takes his place as the \u201cJungle He-Man\u201d who fought against Skeletor and his foes around the time that Adam was born. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

Some fans aren\u2019t fans of it, but I find it fascinating. Particularly the transition \u2013 did Adam grow up knowing about Oo-Larr, or He-Man rather? What happened to Oo-Larr? Did Skeletor finally get the best of him? Is that too dark? These are all the questions I would love to find out more about! But, whenever Oo-Larr comes up, everyone is usually talking about how his name is one letter off from Mo-Larr and how that’s a conspiracy of some sort. <\/p>\n

Anyway, as you can imagine, I\u2019m pretty enamored with finally getting Oo-Larr. I found the toys way later than 1982 and had already seen the cartoon, so I don\u2019t really know him as mini-comics He-Man. I\u2019m aware of the Goddess story in the mini-comics, but this is really my first real exposure to this iteration of the character and his being scooted over from being the \u201creal\u201d He-Man in the mini-comics to a predecessor is cool by me. Besides, even if you ignore the bios, this is still a cool barbarian figure. That sells me right there. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

If there\u2019s any complaint I have about this figure, it\u2019s just that he\u2019s so limited a release. Oo-Larr is the subscription exclusive and it\u2019s a crying shame. He\u2019s so naked that he\u2019s the perfect customizable MOTU figure. Heck, some collectors might even just want him a generic barbarian to raid their other shelves. But, it\u2019s not to be. Oo-Larr doesn\u2019t need a lot of new parts to get this whole naked barbarian thing done. Like I said, it\u2019s a line of half-naked barbarians already. We\u2019ve got the basic elbows-to-knees construction of the main trunk and some lower Demo-Man calves thrown in for good measure. That just leaves new plain forearms (yes, it really took seven years to get plain forearms), new bare feet, and his low-key loincloth to get the details right. None of these were super difficult, but they each add to a great look overall. <\/p>\n

Of course, that\u2019s topped off with the Oo-Larr head sculpt. I like it a lot, but it\u2019s probably my least favorite part. Oo-Larr never really looks \u201cat the camera\u201d in the first mini-comic, so the Alcala face has to be extrapolated a bit. I think the Four Horsemen did a great job of that and he looks sufficiently barbaric, but his jaw line is asymmetrical and it bugs me. I love the snarling expression, the hair, the raised eyebrow, but the face just gives off this awkward vibe to me and I blame that jawline. I thought it might be exaggerated by the hair as it\u2019s glued down over the right cheek while hanging behind the left cheek, but it\u2019s still off when that\u2019s accounted for. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/center><\/p>\n

The paintwork is mostly relegated to some smart shading here and there since we\u2019re dealing with a more-or-less naked dude. I did end up with a little slop on the face, where the white paint is out of the eye and there\u2019s a paint chip on the brow, but they\u2019re minor enough to not take away from the figure. Articulation is also pretty standard for the line. We did lose the boot cut with the boots. I still don\u2019t like that (& haven\u2019t on any figures that used this calf piece), but I can\u2019t argue with the aesthetics. It looks better without a big cut line there. I still miss the poses he could do if he were to have it though. <\/p>\n

Oo-Larr included three accessories and each is pretty cool in its own right. First, is his spear. That\u2019s his. He walked away from his tribe while carrying it so it\u2019s primary pre-He weapon of choice. It\u2019s a nice sculpt and looks great with the figure. He also includes a sword. This one is a little more interesting \u2013 it\u2019s not a sword he uses, so much as it\u2019s just junk laying around the Goddess\u2019 armory. Does she ever clean up?<\/p>\n

Finally, the fun accessory has been a long time coming: a vintage toy head. All I can say is, yes! I really don\u2019t mind the basic Classics He-Man head, but it\u2019s never been quite right. The DCUC Superman head is similar \u2013 it\u2019s fine, but just off. In both cases, I feel like the head is just too round. Superman will forever go without, but He-Man\u2019s day has finally come. The vintage head isn\u2019t as cool as the prototype (it was fully painted, this one is molded in skin tone plastic), but it still looks really good and right at home on many of the He-Man figures so far. The only downside? Yet again, the exclusivity. Mattel could probably sell a headpack of just this head for all our previous He-Man\u2026 but with it being a sub exclusive, I have to choose just one. One. Man. <\/p>\n

Oo-Larr also shipped with the usual map, this time a schematic of Castle Grayskull that you can see here<\/A> as well as the more recent mini-comic which you can read discussion of at the Org<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Overall, Oo-Larr turned out to be a great addition to the line. He\u2019s really just a few key pieces on the existing figure, but all put together he really delivers on being the jungle barbarian version of He-Man before the cartoon blew everything up. The new head sculpt is just a little pinched, but I love the expression. The accessories are great additions and it\u2019s all brought home by a vintage action figure He-Man head for the version of your choice. My only real issue with him is that I could only get one. <\/p>\n
