<\/a> “Wait a minute. Wait a minute, Doc. Ah… Are you telling me that you built a time machine… out of a DeLorean?”<\/strong> – Marty McFly, Back to the Future<\/em> <\/p>\n

There\u2019s one question I get asked a lot. It\u2019s \u201cwhen are you updating your checklists?\u201d But, the second question is often “why don\u2019t you review your Hot Toys?” The answer is that it\u2019s complicated. They\u2019re often long, involved photo shoots compared to the ones for little guys. And I don\u2019t feel like I always take good enough pictures to do them justice. And then there\u2019s the clothes… it\u2019s tough sometimes to worry about every point of articulation on some of these figures, but clothes. That introduces folds, and seams, and fit. Drives me crazy. But I keep buyin\u2019 \u2018em, so I need to keep revewin\u2019 \u2018em too. <\/p>\n

I thought I\u2019d try and get back in the groove with ol\u2019 Marty McFly here. I love Back to the Future rather obsessively. If it\u2019s on I have to watch it. If the trilogy is on\u2026 well, what else do I have to do that day? I hear a hint of the music and its Huey Lewis the rest of the new day. And that\u2019s not to mention the melody of the theme song. I\u2019ll be replaying that in my head all day while you\u2019re reading this. All day. <\/p>\n

And the toys\u2026 all the wonderful toys… well, there\u2019s not really hardly any actually. Somehow it escaped the action figure treatment of the 80s and 90s. A Kenner line would\u2019ve rocked, but there was virtually nothing. I vaguely recall a knock-off Micro Machine? In recent years, nostalgia-driven business models have produced a slew of DeLoreans, some Minimates, and more recently, LEGOs. ReAction has got in on the game with our first figures, but we\u2019re still waiting on a great 6-7\u201d figure to go with our similarly sized collections. Oh, but yeah, there\u2019s a Hot Toy! <\/p>\n

I went back and forth over buying this one. While it is the best non-die cast toy we\u2019ve ever gotten from one of the greatest films ever made, I\u2019m kinda used to not having toys of it, if that makes sense. And this was an investment \u2013 not in terms of later value, but in line commitment. I\u2019ll need a Doc. And the car\u2026 I\u2019m afraid of that Hot Toys DeLorean. I\u2019m afraid of how much it costs. How much space it will take up. Where my wife is going to take my son when they leave after UPS drops it off. There was a lot of bundled in with this Marty McFly. I thought it could be best to avoid it, but then the Sideshow EX version with exclusive guitar went waitlist super quick. I don\u2019t need a 1:6 guitar really. <\/p>\n

I put my name on the waitlist immediately. <\/p>\n

Now that it\u2019s here, I feel that same conflict anew. I do love it. There are some flaws that I\u2019ll cover, admit plenty of highlights, but it\u2019s weird. So many of my prior HT purchases have been super-heroes in\u2026 super-suits. So, this one in regular clothes, well, 80s clothes, and it\u2019s a little weird. I\u2019ve got to futz with jeans and a tucked in-shirt. Does the down vest sit just right? It\u2019s kinda like I\u2019m finally a sixth scale collector. Ew!<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m getting used to it. Hot Toys tends to knock it out of the park and Marty isn\u2019t an exception. The focal point is usually on the head sculpt and they nailed this one. It\u2019s so good that it almost comes back around to take away from the picture. The sculpt captures what is probably Marty\u2019s typical expression \u2013 that he\u2019s not quite sure this is really happening. The squint could be a little tighter, but it\u2019s the gist. It looks fantastic. The only downside is that it doesn\u2019t work with the guitar. Or skateboarding. Or listening to music. It works for staring at the watch. It works for the camcorder, but it is just so spot on as to be limiting. Now, I\u2019m not advocating blank expressions \u2013 those are the worst, but I could really use a few multiple heads on some of these figures. My wallet disagrees, but my shelves are willing. Michael J. Fox\u2019s little half smile, the stern face when you\u2019ve called him a coward, or even just the full on shock face would all be pretty neat to have. Granted, I don\u2019t have a million dollars. I probably shouldn’t have bought this. <\/p>\n

The body is where I get a little lost talking about Hot Toys. I don\u2019t undress (it\u2019s uh, totally cool if you do though, okay?) so I don\u2019t really know the differences \u2013 what buck should\u2019ve been used or what\u2019s new, blah blah blah. Marty is appropriately shorter than the average Hot Toy, clocking in at 11\u201d. That seems just about perfect and I\u2019d guess he probably shares some parts with Robin among others. All the articulation works great and posing him is pretty much a breeze. I\u2019m still working on the shoulders, there are some tight ratchets there, but he can pull the glasses off his head or the earphones down. He\u2019s a doll and the poseability is there if you want it. Some of the articulation, like the wrists or the elbows if you lose the jacket, throws off the aesthetic. But that\u2019s really a testament to how great everything else looks. Continue to Page 2…<\/a><\/p>\n

So the clothes. The outfit? The costume? I like it. It\u2019s spot on. The down vest, the jean jacket (once you pop that collar) suspenders, two shirts, it\u2019s all well-tailored. And looks sharp on the figure. It\u2019s such a unique costume and they nail it so well, that I could probably pop an Eric Stoltz head on there and few would question just who he\u2019s supposed to be. <\/p>\n

So are there aesthetic issues? A few. The neck is probably the biggest. It\u2019s just a tad long for when he\u2019s in his full getup, and gets more noticeable if you try to pose him in the shirts and suspenders as he appears at the end of the film. The whole look really doesn\u2019t work at all unfortunately. The suspenders really pull down on articulation gaps in the shoulder, the clunky elbows (which work great) become visible, and the neck seems never-ending. I think my pics also exaggerated this because I used a new setup and Marty doesn\u2019t have his chin down in hardly any of the shots \u2013 and that\u2019s usually how you see him in the movie. Clothes-wise, the only issue I had is the button on his jeans. It disappeared somewhere during the shoot. Oops. The Velcro is also visible on the fly too \u2013 it\u2019s the weakest part of the figure. <\/p>\n

Finally, the accessories. This was the exclusive Sideshow release so I snagged an extra guitar and strap from the music tryouts in the beginning of the film. Also included is the camcorder from the mall, the Walkman and headphones, his watch, a flyer to save the clock tower, his backpack, and his skateboard. Oh, and sunglasses. Most of these are awesome! The camcorder is my favorite because it works best with the expression and my iconic Marty\/Doc combo is from the Twin Pines Mall scene. The backpack, skateboard, guitar, and headphones are all up there as great pieces. The flyer is a nice touch too. The watch is a little bland, but they\u2019re better than the sunglasses. He\u2019s not really supposed to wear them, they\u2019re just for the movie poster look where he\u2019s pulling them off his head, but there\u2019s not really a good hand for that pose. <\/p>\n

There are also eight hands, three for the right hand and five for the left. Most are specifically suited to one particular accessory (as shown in the instructions) and all are great. I like the ones with the thumbs out so I can do the cool thumbs in pocket pose. I had the most trouble with the one for his skateboard\/backpack combo. The hand just doesn\u2019t want to hold the weight of both. Also included is the standard HT stand doll stand with a twist. This one has the waist clip instead of the crotch clip. It gets in the way with the suspenders and various layers. I need to grab a different clip to swap in there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \t
