I just didn’t like the gold being the predominant color, even if it did serve some of the thematic elements of the film. I bought the figure, of course. That’s how the Build-A-Figure things get ya. The shiny blue Iron Monger was a great figure, I would’ve bought any six figures to get him (did I ever review that guy?). Hmm. Anyway, I still had the old Mark XLII laying around (I’m bad at selling things) and that came in handy since Mark XLIII is… a repaint.

Now this is no fault of the figure, the movie costume appears to be only slightly modified in the film as well. The main change being that the colors have been swapped back into a more traditional scheme. It looks better. Even though the figures are near identical, I’m drawn to the Mark XLIII more. And, I can finally replace the Mark VI in my display.

The sculpt is a good representation of the movie armor from what I can tell. I haven’t seen Age of Ultron yet, so I don’t know how the Mark XLIII fares or if there have been any more extensive modifications made since XLII, but suffice to say the figure looks good. The flakes in the plastic give the figure a nice shimmer and the gold paint finishes the look. That said, the paint could be a little better. It seems like sloppy armor paint has just been a thing since Iron Man 2. Mine came out better than most of the others I’ve seen at TRU luckily. The chest and repulsor tampo are well done too. I think the only visual thing I don’t like is the dull gray shoulders. They blended out better on the heavy gold figure, but they contrast with the red. If the film version is that way, I may be unnaturally distracted by it! Ruin the whole film…

Okay, so the big thing here. It’s in nearly all the pictures! It’s probably the main selling point that makes this IM unique! It’s something that could probably be better, but, again, it’s a start. Or, in this case, a Stark. We finally have an ML with the visor open to reveal Tony’s face. In theory, it’s beyond awesome. In practice, it’s close. The technical details are still fantastic – the helmet looks great. The face plate looks sharp up there. Continue to Page 2…

The sculpt isn’t terrible – it resembles RDJ, but the paint – the thick goopy flesh paint really destroys some of the details. The eyes have a lost some depth and the beard & lips & really soft. The nose is great though. I feel like there’s probably a really great sculpt under there, but the paint can’t do it justice. I only hope that future figures expand on this and do it a little better.

But the worst part of the paint isn’t the paint slop on the edges or the goopy face – it’s the back! Maybe this is screen accurate, I really haven’t looked, but it sure doesn’t look like it. There is some paint back there, upper torso and lower legs, but it’s so undetailed back there that it’s rather jarring compared to the front or when compared to the back of the Mark XLII. I know I shouldn’t care about this too much, but this movie is gonna make eleventy billion dollars. Hasbro is sure to make bank off that – can we get some better paint apps here?

Articulation is pretty much IM standard at this point. Ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, wrists, hips, and inverted ankles; swivels at the biceps & thighs, double hinges at the elbows and knees; the ab joint. Everything works great. The shoulder pads are a soft plastic that doesn’t obstruct too much and the wrist guards are also softer so as not to block the ball-wrists. I don’t know how well they’ll do with wear & tear over time, but they look good and don’t block anything now, so that’s a start.

Overall, the sculpt is the best part – even the face that I’m only lukewarm to looks to be good under there. The paint undone some of the sculpts works with the goopy flesh tone and lack of paint on the back of the figure. All around though, this is my go-to Marvel Cinematic Legends Iron Man for now. I like the armor a lot better when it’s primarily red than gold, and this is a solid figure of that armor. This guy looks to be here awhile unless there are some other armors in that movie post-HB…

For all our Marvel Reviews, check out our Review Index.

[169,122,34,10
2449,2448,24,473,2445,2446,2579,2575,2447
Since I didn’t buy the battle-damaged Iron Man, this will be my last Avengers review for the foreseeable future.
