I don’t know that I always agree with that old trope, but I think it applies to this version of Doomsday. This guy got a raw deal. After something like seven years of having a shrimpy Doomsday, the possibility was raised that we’d finally get a big brute of a figure in the Classics line. But when we finally saw that sweet, upscaled replacement, this dude was standing next to him; a perfectly good idea for a figure that looked amazing, but was being used as a straw man in what we all knew was a lost cause. It sucked nearly all the joy out of what was a pretty cool fig. Heck, it sucked most of the joy out of collecting DC figures in general.

What really got to me, was not the unnecessary mud slung at this figure for not being his unleashed brother, but that the going on behind the scenes, whatever they were – I’m not obsessed with speculating, became the perfect fodder for everyone with a beef with the line, real or imagined, to jump on. Discussion of this figure quickly turned inane. What is quickly got lost in a sea of what wasn’t.

I decided to enjoy my Doomsday and ignore the noise. I had thought that I would not even review them, either of the Doomsdays, because I didn’t want to reopen this particular can of worms. But, as I’ve learned from having this site for a few years, when I skip a figure from a line I cover pretty thoroughly, I get email after email asking where the review is. This was true for the Doomsday as well, so here we go.

The first thing about Doomsday is the size. That’s why he’s got revisited in the first place. The original, too small. The new one, probably too big. In a 6” line, the Doomsday as presented here, the initial appearance, should probably clock in around just 8” maybe a little under. This Doomsday is closer to 9.5”. I’m a little more forgiving for two reasons. One is technical, Doomsday has had a slow creep in size over his appearances. He just keep getting drawn bigger and the figure represents that. And, two, I guess like all those inaccurate comic book artists, I just kinda like him bigger.

The funny thing is this height comes entirely from the all-new legs. Despite being the more economical of the two Doomsdays, this figure has almost entirely new legs. Everything from the waist down to the ankles has been replaced with accurate parts to get the costume details just right. This is great because the legs on the original Kilowog buck (reused for Brimstone, Validus, & Arkillo) sucked. They weren’t as well articulated. These new legs, while providing quite a bit more height also feature two additional swivel cuts which really open up the figure’s poseability.

Above the waist, the new parts are a little sparser. Up top, the figure largely relies on Validus & Brimstone pieces, with only new forearms and the classic eerie masked head sculpt. The rest of the work is done by the ornate tubes and coils that make the containment suit function. Continue to Page 2…

Or slowly not function, as is the case here. Doomsday is really just about to break out with this figure. It isn’t quite accurate since the suit shows no damage, but with a lot of the cables flung loose and his right arm free. See the thing was, in his containment suit he literally defeated the Justice League with one arm tied behind his back. His knuckles should be showing through for one thing, but it’s a non-issue for me. I never understood how any of those bony protrusions fit in the containment suit anyway. And besides, the shackle for the right arm is sculpted on the back, I loved that detail. I just choose to look at this figure as Doomsday shortly before we finally got our first look under the mask.

The paintwork is pretty easy here and the nice paint job reflects that. Doomsday is cast in either of the two shades of green for this suit and then the tubes & coils are painted silver. The base figure required very little paint, so this category is pretty much just about giving the metallic parts a nice shine and that’s done well overall. The eyes and glove edges are done well and overall the figure looks pretty great standing there on the shelf.

Articulation is surprisingly good! I already mentioned the new legs really open the figure up and it’s appreciated. He’s capable of some great poses with ball-joints at the neck shoulders, & hips; swivels at the bicep, wrist, waist, thighs, & boots; hinges at the elbows, knees, & ankles; and there are also rocker ankles (I miss those) and the ab crunch. The ab crunch is the weakest as the chest overlay pretty much shuts it down, but I can get a little movement out of there. I’m pretty satisfied with the crouching & brawling poses the figure can take and I’m super happy with the articulation overall. I think the only thing I’d like more is if the bulk didn’t keep me from pushing the right arm behind his back to get that classic first appearance cover look (the exact one the box is trying to replicate).

Speaking of that packaging, I geeked out over that too back when he arrived last summer. I had gotten away from comics in my youth, but the hysteria around the Death of Superman had me & everyone else heading back to the comic shops. It made the news. I still remember my Mom taking us down to the store and picking up that Man of Steel issue with Doomsday on the cover. I also remember that she was annoyed it wasn’t the big issue, but just the lead-in. And that classic black bag with the bloody symbol? That is still iconic to me to this day, even though it’s re-use has been lame (kinda like Doomsday). The SDCC packaging brought back both those memories with the inner package being based on that classic first appearance cover and then also coming in the all-black outer box which harkened back to the baggie around Superman’s death issue.

Overall, I’m super-satisfied with this figure. And I was and am stoked that we got the other one too. I can’t wait to open it. I opened this one right away since I wasn’t planning on writing this, but I knew I’d review both when the second arrived, so he’s still boxed; my self-imposed review penance gnawing away at me. This figure, despite being a little too big and not quite canon-accurate, is gorgeous. I feel super-connected to the source material – Regen Supes, Steel, Cyborg Superman – all some of my favorite figures and to get both these Doomsdays to stand with them? It’s awesome.

More DC Universe Classics Reviews:

For all our DC reviews, check out our
DC Universe Classics Collector’s Guide.

[6,34,10
15,2557,419,20,2566,50
https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_0158.jpg?fit=640%2C480&resize=350%2C200
https://i0.wp.com/www.itsalltrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_0160.jpg?fit=960%2C960&resize=350%2C200
SDCC Armchair Truetorial: Mattel &
