I keep meaning to get around to watching it, but I have such limited time for the television – I can’t imagine having to binge watch a 100-episode cartoon series, no matter how much I want to. Maybe after I retire from IAT, I’ll have time for all those wonderful cartoons.

I feel that lack of knowledge really came into perspective on Flutterina here. I really didn’t know much about her whatsoever. Her Mattel bio, while seemingly interesting, focused more on her time during Toy Guru’s “modern” era where she meets & falls in love with Clamp Champ and made up something called the “Beautifly Council”. So I cheated a little and read up, and her Filmation origin is actually interesting (a slave girl who is hurt saving She-Ra and given new life by Light Hope as Flutterina). I’m not sure why the bio couldn’t use that, but hey, we got the “Beautifly Council”, likely next year’s Subscription Faction sticker sheet.

Much like Madame Razz, Flutterina proves that Mattel can take a 4H sculpt and nail it with “modern toy technology”. In other words, she ain’t no Rio Blast. A lot of the awesome details from the prototype are captured here. The figure’s got new boots, bracers, the dress, upper torso, and the head sculpt. The head sculpt is one my favorite – it’s still decidedly a 4H/Treadaway sculpt, but it retained a lot of their hand-painted style. It can’t look as good with production being what it is, but the curled mascara and basic paint make for a pretty figure.

Below that are some great sculpted details throughout the figure. Some of the elements look to be a hybrid of the figure & the cartoon with some originality thrown in and it all comes together really nicely. The real attraction here though is the wings, of course. Now some folks don’t like em, I know, but I think they’re awesome.

I love the simple layering technique to give the depth and clear paint lines. There’s definitely an inadvertent 70s game show throwback, but they look amazing all the same. Normally, I look for ways to get rid of the bulk on figures like these (the display is getting crowded), Octavia’s tentacles or Slushhead’s robot arms come to mind. But I can’t strip Flutterina of these wings. They’re just too darn cool. Continue to Page 2…

Articulation is basic for the ladies in the line. Everything we’ve come to expect from the 2.0 buck is present: ball-joints at the neck, shoulders, & hips, hinges at the elbows & knees, swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, & thighs, and some rocker ankles. One thing I don’t like on the girls is the lack of boot swivel to save some tooling. It looks fine, but the articulation would be better with an extra swivel at the boot. The wings are on ball-joints plugged into her back (They’re unattached in package) and have the range you would expect. There is some conflict with the hair that blocks the wings and neck, but the hair sculpt splits into three pieces to get some of that articulation back.

On a figure like this paint is supremely important. On my figure, it could be better, but it’s certainly not bad. The paint details are sharp on the figure, the face especially. The wings are really good, but there is some slop here & there, most notably in areas where the thicker purple paint is glopped on or where the thinner yellow paints shows through. The amount of slop compared to the surface area is still great though and the figure looks great on my shelf.

Flutterina has two accessories, both reused, but it’s all good. There’s the now standard shield in a new orange color that harkens back to the vintage figure and because you can’ attack with butterflies all the time, a new offensive weapon has bene added: Battleground Teela’s sword. It’s a great fit for her and she looks sharp when readied for battle.

Overall, I think this might be one of the best POP figures yet. She’s a great update to the original, I particular love the crazy wings and how they’re based on the vintage toy. And the figure itself lives up those wings. The great sculpt, the articulation, the and paintwork. I could go a little negative here – this figure is great because she doesn’t suffer from so many of the flaws the past ladies have suffered. I’ll just close out with the high hopes I have that the upcoming batch of POP ladies – Sweet Bee, NA She-Ra, Spinnerella, Mermista, and not to mention Peekablue, Perfuma, & whoever else we can snag are this good. That’d be fantastic.

Recent MOTU Classics Reviews:

For all our MOTU reviews, check out our
MOTU Classics Collector’s Guide.

[7,1026,34,10
2156,2070,20,16,2558,586,469
Comikazi Armchair Coverage &
